Oregon RB Dontae Williams transferring out

With LaMichael James and Kenjon Barner returning, Josh Huff making his late-season surge, Lache Seastrunk coming off of his redshirt season, and mega-recruit De'Anthony Thomas set to arrive soon, the Oregon running back position looks as crowded as any in the country. This is likely why one Duck has decided it might be time to find a backfield that offers a little more breathing space.

Oregon confirmed today that Duck redshirt freshman Dontae Williams has requested and received a release from his scholarship . Like Seastrunk, Williams came to Eugene as a highly-regarded running back prospect out of Texas -- he attended the same Aldine (Tx.) high school as Oregon quarterback Darron Thomas -- but spent 2010 on the bench as James (yet another Texas native) and Barber hogged the carries.

With Williams reportedly behind Seastrunk entering the Ducks' upcoming spring camp, he decided it was time to look elsewhere for playing time. Possible landing spots include his old recruiting suitors much closer to home: Texas A&M, TCU, or Arkansas. The No. 22 "big back" in the class of 2010 according to Maxpreps' Tom Lemming, it seems likely Williams has the talent to make an impact wherever he lands once his transfer year is spent.

As for Oregon, it's one fewer option for Chip Kelly to turn to when it comes to distributing carries this fall ... but even after Williams' departure, no one will have more options to turn to all the same.

I agree Chris, but it will be nice if there is a string of injuries there like there was at QB a few years back. I'm hoping they convince Thomas to go on the D side of the ball. During the Army game he was on heck of a tackler.

If hes smart and wants playing time on a team that wins he should go for TCU they could easily run the table on the big east for three years in a row if they pull in a top 20 class with the amazing coaching they have. But duck fans you guys should be nervous about a problem that hampered USC in Pete Caroll's last three years
.

To much of anything is bad, especially having to many quality backs.  They get upset when they don't get carries and it causes chemistry issues. If Kelly does let Thomas play RB he should lay off recruiting another one for a year Seastrunk and Thomas will be a great backfield after James leaves.  But take it from may four talented running backs sounds nice but it can really hurt a team especially if they get pass happy in more than one game.

Sorry for the triple post, but you spelled "Barner" as "Barber" Hinnen.

Btw, finally there is a picture of the duck mascot with "Andy" written on his foot.  I have been looking for one to prove to my friends for the longest time that it is there.  It's a reference to toy story, for those who forgot.  He wrote his name on the feet of his toys.  Thankyou Jerry Hinnen! haha

If there was one guy I didn't want to transfer in the RB position, it was this guy.  I would have been fine with Seastrunk leaving, honestly.  Who knows why he left?  I think the obvious conclusion to jump to is the stacked group of RB's in the program, but he was supposedly ahead of Lache on the depth chart and just below Barner.  He would have seen playing time in short yardage situations.

Like the guy below me said, obviously we need a short yardage back.  We have the lightning, but lack the thunder of Blount or Stewart from the last couple years.  James is a tough runner but even he might not manage a yard when we are handing it off from the shotgun against 11 guys in the box.  Barner couldn't either.

We need a power situation formation and back.  Apparently Tra Carson or Lyerla are supposed to be able to take up the mantle of our next  big back but I don't know.  They're just recruits and not coming off redshirt years.  Don't know much about them.

It would seem to me that it would be a playing time issue.  It looks like with everyone there and James returning, he was looking to get more playing time soon, even though he is an underclassman.

There is no news to indicate he's leaving because of the RB depth. I have heard nothing about him being behind Seastrunk. By all indications to this point he was ahead of Seastrunk due to the fact that Oregon needed a short yardage back.
