Ohio St. recruiting class finishes with Carter

Ohio State added a 24th and final member to its recruiting class yesterday, but that signee won't arrive in Columbus without some degree on controversy.

That signee is Chris Carter, the 6'6", 350-pound offensive lineman who on Signing Day, Feb. 1, was arrested on suspicion fondling multiple underage girls while pretending to measure them for ROTC uniforms. The arrest threw Carter's future with the Buckeyes into doubt, but a lack of evidence resulted in the case being dismissed shortly afterwards.

After "three weeks of looking into the situation," Jim Tressel elected to overlook the arrest and welcome Carter with open arms :
"He has had a great support system at home, as well as at his high school. ... They truly believe that Chris will have great success on and off the field at Ohio State."
Whether fair or not, Tressel will have to hope that makes good on that promise of "great success off the field," since few players in Columbus (if any) will be under as much scrutiny for their off-field behavior. But if Carter can prove the arrest and suspicion is truly behind him, the Buckeyes will be getting a huge building block for an offensive line that has occasionally struggled against top-flight competition in recent years.

Ohio St. recruiting class finishes with Carter

Some of you like sedly75 need to do your homework. Ohio State has been pretty successful under Tressel in winning Bowl games. I did some checking and find that Tressel is 6-3 in BCS Bowl games. As far as SEC goes, he knocked off the SEC # 2 team in the Suger Bowl last year and the year before that won the Rose Bowl over Oregon. Other than Bama and possibly 2 or 3 other programs Ohio State has been above everyone else in the past decade.
I can understand the animosity from Michigan fans who are frustrated from seeing their team being whipped by Tressel's team year in and year out. I do think that better times are ahead for the Wolverines.

Room him with Sullinger.  They can make up stories about spitting and then touch each other.

I think that sparky7 secretly wants to make that a menage a trois.

Ohio St. recruiting class finishes with Carter

You are obviously a couple years late with this post.  Win the Big Ten, yes.  Lose bowl game?  I don't think so.  In spite of 2 losses in National Championship games I believe OSU has the best BCS record (and most appearances) of any school.  You are most obviously a loser and should post elsewhere...

well hats off to jim tressel for not buckling to outside sources who believe hr should not have kept this star in waiting.
many people can accuse of just about anything and with children you are presumed guilty until you can prove
your innocence or after sifting thru the garbage they realize that there just isnt any evidence of such crime.
please see..(mcmartin child daycare case).
after a careful review by the authorities he is free to carry on with his life but i am afraid people will now look
at him with one eye crossed. bravo tress for seeing the truth.

If you want to see how an article about this story should have been written then go here.

it actually reports the story by putting the facts in a fair way that doesnt have people jump to their own conclusions. No suprise that an SEC affiliated network wanted a sexy story to cut down the integrity of Jim Tressel. whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty.

NYKLIB, I can go with you on Clarett.  He did have some red flags in his background, but they were billed as having been corrected before Tressel signed him.  Obviously, that was not the case.  If I'm not mistaken, there was another recruit that same year that had an even more troubled past.  He was recruited an an "athlete", and had been taken in to live with his high school coach in Cleveland.  That kid had a little trouble early on at OSU, but grew up and put those troubles behind him.  He became a student of the game, and went on to win the Heisman.  So you tell me, do you turn away all kids with a troubled past?  If that had been the case, OSU would not have had to deal with Maurice Clarett, but would also not seen Troy Smith grow into a solid citizen.

As for Randy Moss, there was one hell of a lot more to that story than you let on.  Moss was all set to go to Notre Dame when he got into a fight in high school.  He beat the crap out of a fellow student badly enough to be hospitalized for several days.  ND politely let it be known that Moss would not pass admissions there.  In stepped Bobby Bowden, who told Moss that if he redshirted, and kept his nose clean, then he could play for Florida St.  So Moss spent a year redshirting at FSU.  The following summer, Moss had to serve a few weeks in jail as a result of the high school fight.  It was in jail that he tested positive for marijuana.  Bobby Bowden was true to his word and cut Moss from the program.

I detect a note of hypocrisy when you glorify FSU for kicking out Moss while disparaging OSU for doing the same thing with Clarett (yes, OSU gave him his walking papers too).  You pick on OSU, Yet completely lose sight of the fact that Bobby Bowden gave a kid with a troubled past a second chance.

Oh yes, I don't recall Terelle Pryor having anything that resembled a troubled past.  As a recruit, he had a squeeky clean image.  I completely disagree with your assessment of Tressel.  For the past 6 or 7 years, Tressel has not taken many chances on kids with trouble in their background.  This Chris Carter guy is the first in a long time.  And seriously, had Tressel withdrawn the scholarship offer after the case was dropped (charges were never filed), then Tressel would have been ripped a new one for dropping the kid for no reason.  I dare say Carter will be kept on a short leash.

Who cares...whats this team going to do anyways win the miserble big ten and then get blown out in a bowl game...They should be barred from playing the SEC.Let them play like Pitt, that would be a good game, they could win that one.

Written by someone who knows absolutely nothing.

OSU under Tressel is 6-4 in bowl games (5-3 in BCS), losing twice by three and once by 14.  Only the fourth loss (by 27) could be considered a blowout.  In three of the four games they lost, they were the underdog.

And why should OSU be barred from playing the SEC?  Is it because they just beat a team from that conference six weeks ago?

Oh, by the way, OSU is 19-5-1 all time against Pitt, and the last time OSU played them (1996), the Buckeyes won 72-0.

I find it quite amusing that writers hate tOSU so much they have to write such cabbage. I thought it was innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around.

The kid was arrested for it. A bunch of girls came forward, it's not like he is a pro-athlete and he has a ton of money. I doubt 14 year olds that were participating in the ROTC and getting molested would claim he did it if he didn't. Not like they are getting money and I doubt they appreciate the fame that is coming with this.
The sad part is OSU fans support this kid, Tressel is a tool-bag for supporting this kid. Unbelievable... You don't see me supporting Boubacar Cissoko or his criminal actions. I don't support punks that are accused of crap like this and I sure as hell wouldn't support a punk that wasn't even a part of the program!

This is why a lot of people think that some OSU fans are pieces of trash... (let's face it, they are...)
At least we know a majority of OSU fans are classier than this........

Ohio St. recruiting class finishes with Carter

>>>Hmmmm, and 18 year old boy in high school grabs a girls boobie?

That's what fondling is and it is illegal. As it is when a girl grabs a boy's package. What school did you go to? An inner city one, I assume. Or at any rate one that turns out moral degenerates who don't even know that grabbing a girl's boobie, unsolicited, is assault. Or a boy's package, for that matter.

But the story here is that the 18 year old was measuring girls for ROTC uniforms - which meant he was in the ROTC, presumably, which meant he was taking advantage of his position.

How can the case be dropped for "lack of evidence."  Obviously the ROTC, or the University, handed over some money and said, forgoet about. So they did.
