With the NCAA investigation into Ohio State and head coach Jim Tressel still unresolved, the local media is bound to do some further digging on the topic.  As we saw this past season in the high-profile cases of Auburn and North Carolina, the paper trail can reveal much more about the situation at hand, or in some cases misdirect the focus of violations in the first place.  For Ohio State, this bit of information may raise more questions than it answers.

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that when Tressel received the famous emails of warning regarding his players selling memorabilia to a local tattoo parlor, he forwarded them to a man close to star quarterback Terrelle Pryor.  Ted Sarniak, 67, is described as "a prominent businessman in Pryor's hometown of Jeanette, Pa."  Sarniak has acted as Pryor's mentor and advisor since high school, and reportedly was the recipient of the warning emails when they were forwarded by Tressel.

In the news conference to announce the violations against Tressel, the coach nodded when asked if he had forwarded the emails.  He was quickly cut short by athletic director Gene Smith, and has maintained that the reason he kept the information to himself was to protect his players and the confidentiality of the federal investigation against the owner of the tattoo parlor.  Tressel apologized profusely, and has since received a five game suspension as punishment for keeping the information from the university and the NCAA.

But the report also raises questions about Sarniak, and his relationship with Pryor/Tressel/Ohio State.  Of all people involved with the Ohio State football program, why would Tressel choose to inform Pryor's 67-year-old mentor on the issue rather than Pryor's family.  Ohio State has not turned over any email records as of yet, but compliance director Doug Archie was quick to erase any doubts regarding Pryor's relationship with Sarniak.

"Mr. Sarniak and Terrelle Pryor have been friends for a number of years, and their friendship dates back prior to Terrelle's enrollment at Ohio State," Archie said in an email to The Dispatch. "As the friendship developed, Mr. Sarniak is someone who Terrelle has reached out to for advice and guidance throughout his high-school and collegiate career."

When the NCAA investigation concludes, Tressel's five-game suspension and $250,000 fine could be upheld or increased.  A big-name program like Ohio State would prefer that the investigation move quickly, so that the media attention can focus on football rather than independent investigation.  Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, the NCAA has a tendency to take their time with these matters.

Report: Tressel sent emails to Pryor's mentor

I must say after reading several reviews by OSU fans here, I am stunned at how many want Pryor and Tressel out...
I bleed Maze and Blue and of course am disouraged when I hear of a leader of our youth turning a blind eye to this type of action.
The truth is this - we the public will NEVER know the truth.  Why?  Who? or What?  We may hear peices and we may hear confessions, but there is always something behind the scenes the we won't understand.
I hate to say it, but I've heard a lot more good about what Tressel has done for his students than bad.  I just hope he handles this with honor as he portrays himself.  I know that it has taken almost 20 years for the UofM Bball program to recover from the fab 5 era and a scandle like this could turn into such a big deal for OSU's football program, it could be devistating.  I'm sure it won't be a 20 year hit as OSU is on top right now and players are easier to come by the bball programs, but this could very well hurt OSU way more than one thinks.
Maybe that is why so many OSU guys are saying fire Trussel, etc...

Time will tell...

GO BLUE! ;)

Report: Tressel sent emails to Pryor's mentor

I am a Razorback fan and I am glad that the players played in The Sugar Bowl.  I wanted OSU's best shot and we got it and got beat fair and square on the field by a better team that night.

With that being said I am for certain that knowing what he knew he should have not PUBLICLY thanked the NCAA for their help with the matter that he already knew about and should have made an example of HIMSELF first and the players second by sitting them out.  I honestly think if he would have just sat them this would have been over with.  I have a bad feeling for OSU fans even with all of the denial you can convine yourselves of that this is going to get worse.  I see some big santions coming on.  Tressel is a good coach and everyone makes mistakes but he's going to go down for this.

You are obviously not talking to anyone in the SEC other than your asterisk-laced Sugar Bowl win because the SEC has been your DADDY in all sports.

Both Tressell and that &*% clown of an athletic director should be fired. They are an embarrassment to the NCAA.

TRESSEL KEEPS INFO TO CLOSE TO THE VEST?
Last I checked, if a NCAA coach is aware of a violation he to report the matter to the university, not e-mail a QB's advisor. This martyr thing with taking 5 games instead of 2 is pretty weak. What kind of message are we sending? "Oh, it's OSU so they must have meant to do the right thing." Keep digging and I'm sure there are some nice cars and perks that can't be accounted for.
In response to MeCheetah. Why does OSU have this wierd supiority complex? Is it from beating up on Michigimp? Little Brother? Or who ever else the Bucknuts pad the schedule with? Why can't your fans be cool? They even drove Herbstriet out of town!
Madison, WI last season, Badgers took the opening kick off for a TD and never looked back. 5 minutes before half time. 4 Buckeye fans stand up in the middle of the row and head for the aisle forcing eveyone else to stand up for them. I ask the last guy, "Hey, you leaving? Because most people wait until halftime before getting up." His reply, "Don't worry we'll be here for the second half comeback." Smirks, walks away.
Second half starts, guys come back 5 minutes in to the game. "Hey buddy, they got clocks in Columbus?" He gives me the hard stare. I stare back. He sits down. Badgers keep on wailing on the Buckeyes. Sure enough. 5 minutes left in the 4th quarter and these Buckeroo's decide it's time to tuck tail and run. I see the guy not wanting to catch my eye and I'm just smiling. He walks by and I don't say a thing. All the people in our section start heckling these Ohio St. wannabe fans. #1 went down in Madtown!
Tressel should resign before this turns into a Bruce Pearl situation.
