With the NCAA investigation into Ohio State and head coach Jim Tressel still unresolved, the local media is bound to do some further digging on the topic.  As we saw this past season in the high-profile cases of Auburn and North Carolina, the paper trail can reveal much more about the situation at hand, or in some cases misdirect the focus of violations in the first place.  For Ohio State, this bit of information may raise more questions than it answers.

The Columbus Dispatch is reporting that when Tressel received the famous emails of warning regarding his players selling memorabilia to a local tattoo parlor, he forwarded them to a man close to star quarterback Terrelle Pryor.  Ted Sarniak, 67, is described as "a prominent businessman in Pryor's hometown of Jeanette, Pa."  Sarniak has acted as Pryor's mentor and advisor since high school, and reportedly was the recipient of the warning emails when they were forwarded by Tressel.

In the news conference to announce the violations against Tressel, the coach nodded when asked if he had forwarded the emails.  He was quickly cut short by athletic director Gene Smith, and has maintained that the reason he kept the information to himself was to protect his players and the confidentiality of the federal investigation against the owner of the tattoo parlor.  Tressel apologized profusely, and has since received a five game suspension as punishment for keeping the information from the university and the NCAA.

But the report also raises questions about Sarniak, and his relationship with Pryor/Tressel/Ohio State.  Of all people involved with the Ohio State football program, why would Tressel choose to inform Pryor's 67-year-old mentor on the issue rather than Pryor's family.  Ohio State has not turned over any email records as of yet, but compliance director Doug Archie was quick to erase any doubts regarding Pryor's relationship with Sarniak.

"Mr. Sarniak and Terrelle Pryor have been friends for a number of years, and their friendship dates back prior to Terrelle's enrollment at Ohio State," Archie said in an email to The Dispatch. "As the friendship developed, Mr. Sarniak is someone who Terrelle has reached out to for advice and guidance throughout his high-school and collegiate career."

When the NCAA investigation concludes, Tressel's five-game suspension and $250,000 fine could be upheld or increased.  A big-name program like Ohio State would prefer that the investigation move quickly, so that the media attention can focus on football rather than independent investigation.  Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, the NCAA has a tendency to take their time with these matters.

Report: Tressel sent emails to Pryor's mentor

are you stupid or just practicing incase it become an Olympic event? Why do think Barry Bonds is on trial now? pete Rose is banned from baseball? Because if you don't tell the truth, you cannot be trusted at any time. it is called integraty. The quality of telling the truth become a berometer for your character. Without charactor and integrity you have nothing.
this is why it is not surprizing these questions come from Buckeye fans. you have not learned it is not win at any cost, your integrety is too costly.

Wow....integrity is misspelled twice and differently each time. Barometer didn't measure up. Character is right once then wrong one word later. Surprising took a hit too. I guess it is alright to nail someone by calling them stupid and stuff, but for the love of god don't skip the spellchecker when you do so. Moron.

Oh yeah - fire Tressel (almost forgot).

The Vest is done.

The sooner he quits and/or gets canned the better for himself and Ohio State.  An obvious cover up cannot be overcome, regardless of Tressel's past reputation.  Tressel should do OSU a favor and just step down.  The longer he hangs around the uglier it gets.

I feel it wasn't a major violation by the players involved(though they should have known better), but the way the Vest handled it was an obvious "we have a great team now, let's try to win this year and deal with it later".

It all depends on what your definition of is-is...remember that one?....If a president can keep his job for lying about sex, then tressel should be able to keep his job about lying about tatoos....cmon tatoos? He wasn't bribing universities like Auburn, and on, and on..

Report: Tressel sent emails to Pryor's mentor

What a southern-fried idiot. Your smack is weak- first of all, we don't really give a crap about the "Big Dance" in Happy Valley- never have, never will. If we actually cared about college basketball then you can be assured that we'd bring home championships in that sport much as we've done in other sports. So long as the basketball teams cover their costs then we're good.

And you bust on Penn State's 90 year old coach... yet apparently his memory is better than your sweater-vest wearing buffoon. I haven't seen JoePa on ESPN lately talking about how he forgot about NCAA rules violations. I haven't seen Penn State's AD lying through his teeth about how justice has been done and that nothing further needs to be investigated. The OhioSucks administrators remind me of South Park's officer Barbrady... "Nothing to see here! Nothing to see here!" while the town burns down in the background.

If you really want to get to the bottom of this... or any other scandal involving major college athletics... all you really need to do is follow the money. Does anyone genuinely think forwarding these emails was the first time Sweater Vest talked to the "Mentor" about a money issue? Please. Getting the QB to commit to Ohio Sucks University in the first place likely involved a similar path... reach out to the contact, trade information (ie agree to a price), then make the transaction. Even Stevie Wonder can see the dirt here. Pryor runs into money trouble and the ole Ball Coach emails the "Mentor". Shocking.

But perhaps the funniest part about this whole situation was the possibility that Pryor would "duck" punishment by turning pro and making himself eligible for the NFL draft. Like any of the 32 teams in the NFL want to take on THIS hack. Quick question OSU fans... name the last Ohio Sucks University QB who went on to any measure of success in the NFL. I'll give you as long as you want to answer THAT question

Gene Smith?

Am I the only one who thinks Gene Smith looks like Steve Harvey?  They could pass themselves off as twin brothers.

If this stuff keeps going on,Ohio State might have to do what Tennesse did with Bruce Pearl and pull the trigger on firing Jim Tressel..The Heels went through a bunch of mess last season as did Auburn and now the NCAA folks have their big brother eye on Ohio State..Since OSU did move fast on this maybe the punishment wont be too severe..Since Tennesse waited around and didn't act before now,I think the firing of Bruce Pearl was to appease the NCAA "gods"...

Only those with no leg to stand on play the "hated" card. Tressel isn't a bad guy from everything I can tell, but guess what? He f**ked up. He f**ked up big time. Deal with it, live with the consequences however they pan out, and stop acting like a victim.
