Report: Patrick Peterson shopped by Willie Lyles

While the college football world hung onto every word of the Wednesday night's episode of Real Sports on HBO, there was another recruiting bomb dropped on the SEC. A report on ESPN.com indicates that a former Texas A&M football coach was told that the Aggies would need to "beat" $80,000 to sign former LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson.

Von Malone, the former defensive backs coach at Texas A&M and now recruiting coordinator for Tulsa, told ESPN.com that Willie Lyles contacted him in 2007 to let the Aggies know that in order to sign Peterson they would likely have to pay for his services.

"A few days after the kid's visit, Will calls and says, 'If you want this kid, there are other schools that want this kids as well. They're willing to pay a certain amount of money, around the $80,000 mark,'" Malone said. "He said that was something we were going to have to beat as a university to be able to obtain the services of this kid."

Lyles runs a Texas-based recruiting service that is currently the center of an NCAA investigation regarding their relationship with Oregon and running back Lache Seastrunk. Oregon has confirmed that they paid $25,000 to Lyles' company for the recruiting services, not for Seastrunk - who ended up committing to the Ducks.

LSU officials have not made a comment, the SEC was too busy handling the HBO special to make a comment. However, Peterson's father Patrick, Sr. did make a comment to the WWL.

"This is my first time hearing this. This is a shocker," Peterson Sr. told ESPN. "It could have happened. It could have come out of [Lyles'] mouth, that's what happens. These guys try to make money on their own, they are kind of like escort services. That's what I call them, escort services."

This can't be good for Les Miles and LSU, who are picked by many to be favorites to reclaim the SEC West in 2011. The school has confirmed earlier they paid $6,000 for a scouting DVD from Complete Scouting Services, a company that employs Lyles.

At this point, any association to Lyles is going to come under the microscope. This report from Malone only starts another small fire in his network. The last 12 months in college football have been filled with cases regarding improper associations. This latest development suggests we are nowhere close to the end.

SEC = Best pro conference in the NCAA. Does anyone now believe that every top high school player signs with the SEC because they love the deep south? It is just amazing that an over whelming majority of top HS players the last 5 to 6 years have been signing with the SEC and the NCAA has never looked into why. I think they were afraid if they actually started looking, they may have to put the whole conference on probation. Heck, USC got a near death penalty for one player (Reggie Bush) it now appears the whole SEC is doing a lot worse. Let's see how much pull the SEC has and if the NCAA continues to look the other way for their major revenue stream.

No where in this article does it say that any money changed hands.  This is all hearsay from a former Texas A&M coach, and not a very credible coach at that.  If the conversation actually happened, the asst coach should have/would have told his HC.  The only reason not to would have been that this was common practice at Texas A&M.  Lots of people just to conclusions when stories like this are written, but there is not a bit of proof of anything here, except the for asst. coach is less than honorable.  The NCAA definitely needs to talk to this asst coach.

Cancelled checks?  Maybe a Paypal transaction or a money order that is traceable?  That was actually a very funny comment, whether you meant it to be or not. Face it, there's slime everywhere in major college sports...the fact the NCAA has managed to keep these sports/athletes designated as "amateurs" is almost lauaghable.  Slime will always be attracted to easy money...because most of the slime don't have real jobs and naive young athletes are easy targets.  If caught, the schools get penalized, the athletes move on to professional leagues (sometimes) and the slimey "agent" walks.  I don't get it.

Wow.  Illegal payments to athletes by an SEC school.  Who would have thunk it? It's not like this happens every year at SEC schools.  Actually, I would like to retract that last sentence.

How about extortion charges against alleged slimers like Lyles (assuming these allegations are true).  I'm no attorney but extorting state money from a state university employee sounds like a chargeable offense, despite the fact much of these alleged monies are paid by boosters.  There are hundreds of handlers just like this clown that are attracted to the potential for easy money like moths to a porch light.  Unfortunately, many of the athletes-children, and often their parents, don't or won't tell them to get lost.  If Mr. Peterson's claims of ignorance are true, then maybe he should talk to his son a little more often.  Guarantee that the son knew he was being shopped.

I HATE LSU. But where was this Afro American coach when this happened? Who did he report it too. This looks like another piece of S___ looking for a payday. Unless you got video, tapes, or cancelled checks on Auburn, LSU, Ohis State, or whoever, Go the F away. You all are just SEC haters cause we dominate.

I love my coach, At Auburn, response to the HBO special. How much did HBO pay these player to say what they did. How come they interviewed over 25 players and offered money to all and only 4 nothings made these comments?

LSU, how much of the Eighty grand landed, with the Petersen family! IF the Texas A&M coach is guilty, so is the player, and recruitment service! you know having read this story,  that the player had to take some payment, the Question is how much! this is going on in every conference, not just the SEC.
