The Michigan - Notre Dame matchup has gotten some extra hype this year, with the recent announcement that their Sept. 10 meeting in Michigan Stadium will be moved to primetime. It will be the first night game in the history of the storied rivalry, and the first true night game in the history of the Big House. Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly recently divulged some even more juicy details about the matchup, telling the media that both schools will be wearing throwback jerseys for the game. He stayed pretty mum on the look of the Irish (the report says Kelly hinted to the Joe Kuharich era -- 1959-62), but gave a pretty good description of how the Wolverines will look for the showdown.

"I'm just trying to help you guys piece together what it's going to look like, without me saying and then getting yelled at by our adidas people that we blew the surprise for them," Kelly told Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune. "But yeah, we're going to have throwback uniforms. As they will. I can tell you what theirs look like: They have a block 'M' on them, and a number, and a number on their helmet. How's that? The adidas people at Michigan are going to be (ticked) at me."

The primetime matchup will be a endorsement dream for adidas, who has largely missed out on the publicity of alternate uniforms in the last couple of seasons. Tennessee made some noise with their Halloween uniforms, but few other examples come to mind from recent history. But there will only be a handful of regular season games in 2011 that will get the treatment of Michigan-Notre Dame. For the last couple seasons Nike has trotted out trendy alternate uniforms for their biggest programs on the biggest stage. Now adidas will get to join the fun for this clash of past, present, and future.

Correction-- not first night game of rivalry

This will not be the first night game in the rivalry.  They played at night once at Notre Dame in the 1980s. Anthony Carter returned a punt for a touchdown, but ND won the game (23-17 I believe). Someone can look that up, but it is surprising that a CBS writer and his editors would fail to do his research.

Put the crack pipe down when you post on-line.  I am guessing the public school systems in Ohio are top notch, huh?

As a Michigan fan...I agree with TonyChago.  Tressel messed up...but he is right.  He didn't kill, rape, or torture anyone.  He lied, and yes, lies are bad.  And he does deserve his punishment.  End of the day...neither Michigan nor Notre Dame can say anything to OSU fans about college football success.  OSU is by far the better program at this time and we just have to deal with it for the time being.

I like the idea of the throwbacks between Michigan and Notre Dame. You have two great powers in college football. I wish that this slinging would. I would fire coach Tressel in a heartbeat, was wrong is wrong. But please don't be so saintly at Notre Dame, no one died over Tressel desicion. Coach Kelly choose football over a young man life.

Who cares about ND-Mich....I don't give a crap about either program and love it when they both are stinking up the joint. They can both wear throwback uniforms but they will never recover the success they had in the past!!!

Well ajfsports, I see that so far in this thread you have brought up Michael Floyd, Lou Holtz's tenure at South Carolina, attending a Ohio State-Michigan game with your pregnant sister, and a generalization regarding "what you've noticed" about Notre Dame fans.  Yet you have said virtually nothing on the match-up between Notre Dame-Michigan or even the throwback jerseys they will be wearing, which is what this blog was all about.

Perhaps you're not in the best position to be casting stones about people making comments that have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

That's cool. ND will beat them old school anyway. Kelly has this team going in the right direction. Hoke will take a year or 2 to undo Rodriguez's damage. ND will come in with little fanfare, but will be a tough team. They'll climb the polls in 2011.

Watch out for the Irish in 2011. Kelly has a year under his belt, a 4 game winning streak and a bowl win in his back pocket. This year he'll amp up the expectations. ND finally has understood that playing defense is what helps you win. Kelly has a good recruiting class coming in and they're buying into his program. Michigan has talent, but a lot of problems and a defense that's brutal. Hoke will turn it around, but perhaps not until 2012 or 2013.

The one thing Ive noticed about ND fans in general (note not all... but most in general). It doesnt matter what their players do, the first thing they respond with is attacking the misdeeds of the school of the poster in question. If I said that Michael Flloyd deserved to be suspended for the season the FIRST thing in response would be that Jim Tressel is a cheater and OSU needs to have the book thrown at them by the NCAA.....COMPLETELY ignoring the fact that that has NOTHING to do with Michael Floyd.

"One exception to that rule has been a visit to OSU.  Let me tell you that was worse than a visiting fan at Miami.  Obnoxious fans throwing beer and every curse word in the book just for supporting our team in your stadium."

OSU fans are animals.  If you lived in Columbus, you'd probably act that way too.  Really, it's all they have.
