Willie Lowe to transfer from Iowa, citing rhabdo

A rhabdomyolysis scare may have briefly hospitalized 13 Iowa players earlier this year, but it has finally claimed its first permanent casualty of sorts. Willie Lowe, a cornerback who played a key reserve role for the Hawkeyes, announced today that he would be seeking a transfer from the school, according to Joe Schad.

"I would like to be able to sit out a year, regain my strength, feel fine and play again," Lowe told ESPN when asked about the prospect of playing football again. "But I don't know. I am still down 20 pounds and I am having headaches every few days."

Even as the 13 players have all been medically cleared to practice, most are still working to fully recover. There's a world of difference between "allowed to start practicing football again" and "back to normal," after all, and Lowe isn't the only player on that Iowa team who's still struggling to regain his pre-rhabdo form. Still, the fact that some players are at full speed already is promising, considering the fact that there's still five months of off-season left. That number of fully recovered players can only go up, after all.

As far as whether this is the last of the rhabdo-related transfers, that remains to be seen. There's little indication that a mass exodus of players is coming, to put it mildly, but the aftermath of the hospitalization and recovery will take months and years to unfold, long after every player has recovered. The longer said recovery takes, after all, the longer that player spends performing at a sub-optimal level -- all while his former backup (if he had one) relishes his new role with the team. At that point, the previously stricken player may decide to transfer just to get a little playing time instead of staying buried on the depth chart. Is that still a rhabdo-related transfer? Perhaps, but if the hypothetical player holds no animosity toward the coaches over the incident, then it's disingenuous to lump him in with Lowe, whose transfer is directly related to his rhabdomyolysis recover. So we'll see how this all shakes out; for now, it just looks as if the Iowa secondary just took a small hit, depth-wise, but that's about it.

Yes, I realize Iowa beat LSU in a fairly exciting Cap 1 Bowl.  Nice history there for Iowa.  To hear some tell it, that may be the biggest victory in the program's history.  I do believe that win put Iowa in the top 10 that year, so it was very significant for their program.  Obviously, there was no carryover for Iowa, as they are basically still an 8-4/9-3 type of team.  Good, but far from great.  It does not look like the loss did much to hurt LSU as we won a NC three years later.  Plus, having Iowa beat Saban in his last game at LSU was not such a bad deal.  I had nothing against Iowa until I came onto this site.  The Iowa fans on SN or ESPN do not act like this collection.  When the loudest of the Iowa fans displays hate in his screen name, you are showing the world that you are a clown.  Clearly, he was not at the Cap 1 Bowl when Iowa won because he clearly knows nothing about the LSU fanbase and tailgating.  Go read another story or two and then come back and put yourself in it again.  I always love when people do that.

As usual, people with no knowledge of Iowa football are out pretending to have a clue.  Getting humiliated by Wisconsin on an annual basis?  Then why does Iowa have a winning record against Wisconsin in the last decade?  Try going back more than one season when proclaiming to know it all, d(ic)k13.

you mean that team that got waxed by washington in their bowl game. that team who lost to iowa state the year before AT HOME????  or lost to a HORRIBLE embarrassing texas team last year?  i think that team from the west is going to be shocked that their little cushy division of the north in the big12 is NOT what they are about to enter in the legends!
the media and some of these idiot fanbases likes to portray KF and their program as this little team that could but they are slowly stealing other teams recruits as you speak. if you look at the nfl draft in the past...the team that is always near the top that gets players drafted is iowa. players like tony moeaki who we knew was a great player but the media never recognized him. he is the next dallas clark but then again you never heard of him until years later. same with shonn greene. he was the only player to gain 100 yards in every game EVER by a college player and now im pretty sure the jets were happy to grab him in the second round. LSU and nebraska are the media loving teams but they havent won anything more than iowa in the past years. oh LSU got a gift 2 loss NC because their commissioner runs the BcS and how convenient for them. dont pretend to be shocked when iowa finishes alot higher than most people think. winning? they are the only big ten team who consistently carries the big ten banner vs that VAUNTED suc the media loves to yuck up on.  when teams like boise state, TCU, iowa and wisconsin come in and try to ruin their little circle of teams acceptable...the hate comes out.  the medias take on the rhabdo saga was a witchhunt and their treatment of KF was unwarrented.  all this site likes to do is pretend all the incidents of the suc that has happened in the past month is a figment of their imagination. sorry but iowa isnt going away and nebraska isnt going to dominate like you think either.  you play more than one or two tough team in our conf not just oklahoma and texas...who now is even considered weak.

i love that red idiot who is so chicken to tell us who he roots for but goes off on a fanbase like hes dodds little brother. anybody and i mean anybody siding with these two "writers" tells us all we need to know about them and YOU. pretty sure their team they cheer for or pretend to cheer for isnt worth mentioning or they would have.  i love people who comment and other fanbases (im not talking to you buckeye and i have actually defended you guys because i think the overblown garage sale saga is beyond stupid. when you have guys who have cheated through the years in saban, miles, meyer, visorboy and most of the other teams in that conf, the hypocrisy of any of those fanbases ripping on another is just a coverup for their own coach IMO)  think they are the daddy of the board.

I'm sure all this news will be beneficial to the  Hawkeye football program. Come on; if you can survive an Iowa spring practice, then the sky's the limit. That is if the goal is to put the beat down on Indiana, Illinois and Purdue before being humiliated by Wisconsin and Ohio State on an annual basis. Good news Iowa fan; you can be a legend in the leaders division in 2011 or is it the other way around. Also; you only have to look to your western border to see who will dominate your program for years to come.

Red, how long have you had these anger issues?  Living in dark spaces like basements often cause that.  Perhaps you should spend some time in the sunlight.  Iowa fans have the right to express themselves regarding that crap that has been dished out from CBS and some whiney moron like you isn't going to tell me or anyone else to leave the website.  Try some anger management if you can't handle the fact that Iowa fans have had enough of this crap from CBS (and you).

UNF-Like i told your little buddy FlaSUCKSgoIOWA, stay off the website. If you're not man enough to take the criticism then go AWAY.  Like i said, i'm not from the south and the basement saying doesn't hurt my feelings.  I'm a straight forward guy always have been, i don't think that every iowa fan b!tches just certain ones on here. I'm from a state next to iowa the stupid southern things are just that stupid as you are. Now go back to you basement, oh wait, trailers don't have basements.

flaSUCKSgoIOWA- Dodd/Doyel did not write this so called story. So i guess you're now saying there is another iowa hater. That would now make three iowa haters on CBS.  Would that be a clear sign that maybe you should not come to the Cbssports website.  If you would stay off the website that bashes your team, you wouldn't b!tch as much.  Hmmm, makes sense to me.  Also i'm not from the south you nimrod. Highlinered means two things. Highline, means i work on transmisson powerlines but i didn't except you to know that seeing how intelligent you are on here. Red, is the main color of my huskers(scarlet really). So seeing how nebraska is right next to iowa, it's hard for you to say i'm from the south. Now go back to your moms basement, YES i said basement haha douche.

You guys can relax.  It's not like you have all of American and Media calling for the termination of your program.  It does not look good but your problems are minor (trust me as an OSU fans).   If you think this article is bad, pretty sure you have not been reading any CBS articles.   I so want to defend Iowa fans but of course I am kinda bitter with the recent attack (so many haters and very few that were supporters but those that I remember were not from the big ten - more from SEC than any).   But not going to be that fan so I do agree that this sucks with the article coming out but not a big deal even if the media tries to make it one.

I didn't assume you were an Ohio State fan.  I was noting that this site has a story ripping Iowa or Ohio State at all times.  If you could read, you would know that.  But you're from the south, so you are excused.  You can go back to your basement now.
