Willie Lowe to transfer from Iowa, citing rhabdo

A rhabdomyolysis scare may have briefly hospitalized 13 Iowa players earlier this year, but it has finally claimed its first permanent casualty of sorts. Willie Lowe, a cornerback who played a key reserve role for the Hawkeyes, announced today that he would be seeking a transfer from the school, according to Joe Schad.

"I would like to be able to sit out a year, regain my strength, feel fine and play again," Lowe told ESPN when asked about the prospect of playing football again. "But I don't know. I am still down 20 pounds and I am having headaches every few days."

Even as the 13 players have all been medically cleared to practice, most are still working to fully recover. There's a world of difference between "allowed to start practicing football again" and "back to normal," after all, and Lowe isn't the only player on that Iowa team who's still struggling to regain his pre-rhabdo form. Still, the fact that some players are at full speed already is promising, considering the fact that there's still five months of off-season left. That number of fully recovered players can only go up, after all.

As far as whether this is the last of the rhabdo-related transfers, that remains to be seen. There's little indication that a mass exodus of players is coming, to put it mildly, but the aftermath of the hospitalization and recovery will take months and years to unfold, long after every player has recovered. The longer said recovery takes, after all, the longer that player spends performing at a sub-optimal level -- all while his former backup (if he had one) relishes his new role with the team. At that point, the previously stricken player may decide to transfer just to get a little playing time instead of staying buried on the depth chart. Is that still a rhabdo-related transfer? Perhaps, but if the hypothetical player holds no animosity toward the coaches over the incident, then it's disingenuous to lump him in with Lowe, whose transfer is directly related to his rhabdomyolysis recover. So we'll see how this all shakes out; for now, it just looks as if the Iowa secondary just took a small hit, depth-wise, but that's about it.

you probably have no clue what a basement is im guessing.

and then you got to love the LSU basher. EASILY the scariest tailgate game ever. the cap one bowl game when LSU played iowa and the voodoo tailgating was beyond strange. they didnt have any more fans than iowa and in fact i think iowa had more but the collection of what seemed like a witch mixing its potion tailgate was beyond. what seemed like a voodoo demonstration although none of us iowa fans are really for sure what they WERE DOING.  i knew the south was weird but this topped it all. and then when their AWFUL fans dumped beer on everybody when they scored with less than a minute left they thought the voodoo worked. little did they know THE CATCH was about to happen and the pure SHOCK of their rude and idiot fanbase was priceless!   yeah lets talk about fanbases. we know the intellect of the south and im pretty sure no LSU person has a clue how passionate the fanbase of iowa is as well as knowledgable.
you two come on here and think you are all that while bashing iowas fanbase when we are just stating the obvious about this dodd hating witchhunt of made up crap
what now appears as willie lowe is NOT TRANSFERRING AT ALL...all you idiots who have no clue what this column is even about. you can go BACK TO YOUR BASEMENT. yes i said basement. or is it your porch?  because thats what southerners do. sit on their porch in the swamp weather and do nothing. just sit and stare.
unless you have something to add about the ACTUAL TOPIC of THIS article you have no right to rip other fanbases for sticking up for their team among this milk dodd and doyeliet witchhunt.
LSU you need to concentrate on your own cheating school and their money handshakes. seems your guy is dumber than a box of rocks and nobody can remember anything. how about you stick to YOUR problems and we stick to ours. patrick peterson the below 10 wonderlic wonder needs some people to back him up on his amnesia of...i have recollection of visiting with one of the biggest swindlers in the south? hmmmmmmmm
and red rover red rover send your little fanbase right over.

Hmmm well i don't live in my moms basement. Since you say that in a lot of your post, i believe you live in your moms basement weird huh.  That is another thing, if you're not drinking the Iowa is best kool-aid, you just get attacked and called names. I think half the iowa fans on here are 10 and younger.

Also i'm not an ohio state fan, so good try.  -1 for unf

Red, I would take that bet, but I don't want to live in your mother's basement.  If you don't know anything about the Iowa players (which obviously you do not), perhaps you could go comment on one of the 47 Tressel stories instead.

LOL LSU FAN...you are the F ing moron who came onto an IOWA article, read it, and then felt compelled to write about it so obviously Iowa means something to you. You can sit over in your corner and act like the stuck SEC snob you are but the fact remains that Iowa beat your @ss the last time we played. So, it doesn't matter what you say about our program.....your two cents aren't worth a crap!

I will never understand Iowa fans.  I will say that as a fanbase, you are the worst I have ever seen.  The funny thing is, you are barely even on the map, but you guys act like you are a real player on the college football scene.  Newsflash, you are not.  For Iowa fans to put themselves in the same boat as tOSU just shows how delusional many of you are.  If you think CBS hates you so much, then go somewhere else.  Way too many comments from Iowa fans are basically "we are the victim" posts.

And let me add that many of your posts are more ridiculous than anything you claim that CBS, Dodd, or Doyel do to you.  From reading the Iowa posters, everything was peachy with the rhabdo situation.  The players were all out of the hospital and doing well.  Now we find out that this kid is still 20 lbs underweight and having headaches.  Because he is not totally on board with what the Iowa fans want, not he is a piece of crap that you want to transfer.  Whoops, he is only considering transferring, so maybe you want him back.  Grow up people and quit playing the victim card.  Nobody hates you.  Nobody will ever hate you as you are not a good enough program to elicit hate.  The fanbase, now that is another story.

I bet you would be WRONG red!  what an ignorant fool for sticking up for this tard. this is more than rhabdo hate and obviously you are cluesss to all the hate this little turd has spewed on iowa over the years.  this little tard avoids anything thats positive about iowa...SEE THAT BIG WIN AGAINST HIS LITTLE missou team he HAS still avoided talking about .... his passion is ripping iowa and ohio state and now hes known as a national idiot of hating on iowa and that other team he has a mancrush on of ripping at.
of course we know little milk dud didnt write THIS ONE but cbs is the suc network and a turd is a turd in reporting

WOW!!!! You Iowa fans b!tch about everything.  I think its funny that dodd didn't write this, so you turn on the player.  I would bet my mortgage that if this kid made some awesome play in the near future, you all would say he's the best.  If the article doesn't have Iowa's the best, Iowa will when the championship, or iowa's the toughest team you guys cry.  It is the media and you're letting them win.

Another Case of the Media Jumping the Gun

Oops!!!! Check out www.hawkcentral.com which a website of the Iowa City Press-Citizen.  Good story on how Iowa has granted Lowe a release IF he wishes to transfer, but a family member says he will likely remain a Hawkeye.  Have to admit it does sound like Schad was digging extra deep in an attempt to find a story.  Lowe has been a good special teams player for his entire career but has not really seen any substantial playing time.
