SDSU's Long calls Boise blue turf 'unfair'

Say this for first-year San Diego State head coach Rocky Long: he's not a man to hide what he's really think.

Just ask BYU. Or as of yeterday, his Aztecs' new conference rivals at Boise State, since Long made it beyond clear he doesn't think much of the Broncos' famous Smurf Turf:

"I think they ought to get rid of that blue turf. I think it's unfair," said Long, the former New Mexico coach ...

When asked to expand, Long said, "it takes the visiting team a quarter or two to get used to that different field."

Long said players "track the ball differently" on the blue turf, particularly since Boise State traditionally wears all-blue uniforms on the blue turf.

Long isn't the first coach to grumble about the Boise field's effect, though he might be the first to do so so publicly. We encourage him to continue, since the Aztecs' home game against the Broncos already shapes up to be one of the best in the 2011 Mountain West and should only get spicier from here. (Boise's Chris Petersen unfortunately wasn't willing to play along, politely saying his players don't notice any effects from the blue field "because we see it every day.")

But is there any truth to Long's claims? The Broncos did go 40-0 at home in their 10 years in the WAC and are (as the Idaho Statesman points out) an incredible 69-2 on the blue turf since 2000.

But the simpler explanation for BSU's success, of course -- and it's one we wish Petersen had made in retort -- is that the Broncos have been really, really good, and traveling all the way to Boise to play those good teams is very, very hard. Maybe Long is right that the combination of the field and the Broncos' blue uniforms is unsettling enough that it doesn't make for an entirely even playing field (and to be fair to Long, he does have personal experience with the Smurf Turf, having taken the Lobos to Boise in 1999), but whatever advantage Boise gets isn't nearly so big as the advantage of simply having the better team.

In short: with all due respect to Mr. Long -- and to the thousands of retinas scarred annually by the blue turf in high definition -- Boise shouldn't feel obligated to tear up the turf anytime soon.

I 100% agree with Long!!! Blue uniforms against a blue field is a HUGE advantage for Boise!!!
Then why doesn't Michigan State win the Big Ten almost every year? Surely, if blue uniforms on a blue field is a huge advantage for Boise State, then green uniforms on a green field makes Michigan State unbeatable in East Lansing.

Oh, wait a minute, Michigan State lost at home to Central Michigan in 2009. Never mind. Rocky Long's an idiot.

Ask yourself, what is the name of Indianas stadium?  Or, Mississipi State, Missouri, Kansas State, or Clemson.
Actually, that's not a hard question. Three of the five are Memorial Stadium, with Mississippi State being Scott Field and K-State being Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Does the whining ever stop. God just play your game the way you play your game. If something like a field color distracts you from that you're not a very good team or coach. The best teams don't care about distractions they just play and don't whine.

I agree that the blue turf is ugly, and there is no doubt some disadvantage to visiting teams who require a period of adjustment to get used to it.  For that reason alone, BSU should at least consider going back to the traditional green simply out of sportsmanship.  I'm not sure why the NCAA hasn't mandated the color of the field, as they have the dimensions.  How about some team deciding to make their field longer, or wider or maybe move the goalposts further back, or whatever?  Those things are prohibited by the NCAA rules committee, and IMO they should also mandate green as the standard color for the playing surface. Just my 2 cents.

Bob, the best argument made so far.  If Oregon decides to wear all green in Autzen, or Michigan State, (and they have), with the green turf, is that a problem too?

PS.  I wish Nevada messed with the goal posts.  Made them about 3 ft. wider.

Tennis players seem to have no problem tracking a smaller, faster moving ball on green/blue/brown courts.

BoiseMike, you must be on a mission to defend that lame team and their ugly field. Accept the fact that BSU will never be taken very seriously. Keep clinging to that 1 point last second trick play win you got from Oklahoma, because that is all you have. Boise will always be on the outside looking in at teams like Oklahoma, OSU, USC, Alabama, Texas and Florida.  I love watching you kick against a granite wall! LOL

At least I have a team I defend and spend 80%+ of my time on this site talking about my team.  You might consider declaring a team, speaking positively for that team and not 98% of your time moaning about the injustice BSU brings to the NCAA.  Never have I claimed they are the best team in the nation.  However, average athletic budget of the six teams you just mentioned is around $100 million.  I would hope they would have an edge and be considered better than BSU and their $25.8 million budget.  Are those teams 4 times better?
