SDSU's Long calls Boise blue turf 'unfair'

Say this for first-year San Diego State head coach Rocky Long: he's not a man to hide what he's really think.

Just ask BYU. Or as of yeterday, his Aztecs' new conference rivals at Boise State, since Long made it beyond clear he doesn't think much of the Broncos' famous Smurf Turf:

"I think they ought to get rid of that blue turf. I think it's unfair," said Long, the former New Mexico coach ...

When asked to expand, Long said, "it takes the visiting team a quarter or two to get used to that different field."

Long said players "track the ball differently" on the blue turf, particularly since Boise State traditionally wears all-blue uniforms on the blue turf.

Long isn't the first coach to grumble about the Boise field's effect, though he might be the first to do so so publicly. We encourage him to continue, since the Aztecs' home game against the Broncos already shapes up to be one of the best in the 2011 Mountain West and should only get spicier from here. (Boise's Chris Petersen unfortunately wasn't willing to play along, politely saying his players don't notice any effects from the blue field "because we see it every day.")

But is there any truth to Long's claims? The Broncos did go 40-0 at home in their 10 years in the WAC and are (as the Idaho Statesman points out) an incredible 69-2 on the blue turf since 2000.

But the simpler explanation for BSU's success, of course -- and it's one we wish Petersen had made in retort -- is that the Broncos have been really, really good, and traveling all the way to Boise to play those good teams is very, very hard. Maybe Long is right that the combination of the field and the Broncos' blue uniforms is unsettling enough that it doesn't make for an entirely even playing field (and to be fair to Long, he does have personal experience with the Smurf Turf, having taken the Lobos to Boise in 1999), but whatever advantage Boise gets isn't nearly so big as the advantage of simply having the better team.

In short: with all due respect to Mr. Long -- and to the thousands of retinas scarred annually by the blue turf in high definition -- Boise shouldn't feel obligated to tear up the turf anytime soon.

SDSU's Long calls Boise blue turf 'unfair'

Whether it's "unfair" or is definitely the ugliest field in college football.  And pretty lame...I mean who thought dying the field the school colors was a "cool" thing to do.  Can you see LSU dying theirs bright yellow...or Washington's purple?  Or how about Oregon deciding their field doesn't quite match the green they wear, so they make the already green field a nice neon/flourescent green.  Seriously...why did they choose to do that?

I would love to see all college teams that have turf have it in their school colors. (A) It is FAKE GRASS people who cares if it is green. (B) How cool would it be to turn on tv and automatically know where the game is. Players can't track the ball against the color? Aren't passes tracked against the sky? Playing on green away fields doesn't seem to have hurt the Boise players very much in the past few years.

Before his Aztecs have to visit the Blue, BSU will be in San Diego on their green.  If his team can hang with the Broncos for more than a quarter on their field, then I consider his argument about the Blue.

Do the Broncos' opponents really have that tough a time telling the Broncos uniform apart from the turf? Wow...that's the dumbest excuse I have ever heard. If a football player cannot tell the difference between a Broncos player and the Broncos turf then maybe they should not be playing football in the first place. To say that the Broncos' success is due to trickery and unfair use of equipment only makes opposing coaches look like fools.
I'm not a Broncos fan because I don't like their play calling. They do seem to resort to trick plays to score points and I really hate it when teams use trick plays. I also don't like their hurry up offense. But I won't condemn them for using blue turf and blue uniforms. It's alot better looking than the ugly puke-inspired uniforms of the Oregon Ducks football team. You know for a team that's bankrolled/supplied by Nike one would think that they would have alot better looking uniforms....but they don't!

If its that big of a deal put your own color turf down, if the playing surface is going to be a discussion topic, make everyone change back to tall fescue grass cut to 1/4" and only allow the yard lines to be painted, also why we are at it have all the stadiums torn down and rebuilt to the same design so everything looks excattly the same. I thought part of college was the atmosphere created by each school. I love the blue turf. I think its great and may give them a little advantage, but doesn't the student section being on top of the field or the design of the stadium not do the same thing. Just a coach mad because he didn't think of it first, Wish they would have gotten to play for a NC one year would love to see them against the SEC team that would have stomped them.

If you think that's whinning, see what takes place when the Aztecs roll out their new turf.  Aztec Red with Black lines and hash markers.  Rocky Long is just preparing the Media and others for the switch.  The Chargers apparently have already signed off on the paint job before each game.  It will cost more but Boise has Raised The Flag and they can't complain when others salute it.
