The sordid tale of Harvey Updyke, the Alabama enthusiast currently accused of poisoning the Toomer's Corner oak trees at Auburn, has taken a rather disturbing turn. According to Glennon Threatt, Updyke's attorney, Updyke was attacked behind a nearby gas station after his hearing today, and he was briefly hospitalized with a head injury.

According to al.com, Updyke received a split brow, facial bruises, and a possible concussion; there's also some concern that Updyke may have lost consciousness at some point. Threatt announced the attack on Paul Finebaum's radio show shortly after it occurred, and if that sounds odd, let's keep in mind that Updyke is only facing trial because he himself confessed to the poisoning on Finebaum's show back in January.

Details on the attack are still thin; there's no video of the attack, much less a suspect or a name or anything, but Jay Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser is confirming that the attack did occur, and that Updyke is currently meeting with the Opelika Police Department.

It's a shame, but not a surprise, that a rivalry so inflamed with passion and consequence has turned so, so ugly. Neither Updyke's alleged poisoning of the oaks nor his subsequent attack have any place in American society, much less the day-to-day travails of college fandom. It's infantile savagery, the type of loutish behavior that debases the entire state of Alabama in one fell swoop. The choice is clear: Alabama and Auburn fans must either grow up or resign themselves to being the hysterical, bloodthirsty manbabies of college football.

Incident had nothing to do with the TREES. Uodyke just mouthed of to the wrong guy and got his head slapped.  Crap like this happens everday and if you believe it is because of the trees you have a concussion.

How is that reinforcing a stereotype? I'm simply stating that most of the people that have this view of the state of Alabama have never even been here. I'm sure one trip to most places in the state would change your mind one way or another. I know the strong asinine view you have of Alabama made you take that statement as me talking about a "good ole whoopin" or somehing like that, but I didn't mean that at all.

The story forgot to include the other detritus of Bammy' with the scene. A pickup truck, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, Lynard Skynard, NASCAR, a mobile home, and a Klan outfit.

I'm from Alabama and I understood every "big" word randomly placed in this crap. As for anyone claiming this is just how us southerners are and stereotyping the state of Alabama on this one jackass needs to take a trip down here and have their mind changed...one way or another.
Wow, talk about reinforcing a stereotype.......Nice work.

NO ONE HAS CONFIRMED THAT THERE WAS A DAMN ATTACK!!! THE ONLY THING THAT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED IS THAT UPDYKE SAID HE WAS ATTACKED... the cashier didnt see anything, and what was he doing behind a gas station in Auburn? the story is full of holes and now Updyke is going to have to face charges of filing a false police report as well

"hysterical, bloodthirsty manbabies"
Say what!?  There's such a thing?  If so I'd hate to meet their moms.  I'm only kidding.  However, you're saying that the Oak tree poisoning and the eventual assault on its mastermind are actions Auburn and Alabama fans should avoid.  I agree that these are actions that have no place in America, but the choice you offer to fans to grow up or become "hysterical, bloodthirsty, manbabies" and consequently debase Alabama in one fell swoop, is an even worse action to lower the reputation of a state.  So Shaq isn't that good anymore, it doesn't mean the Celtics aren't that good anymore too.  But if media people keep mentioning how old and slow Shaq is when talking about the Celtics, then people are going to relate the Celtics to old and slow.  Do you see what I'm saying?  Your comments are more the ""one fell swoop" than the stupid actions of a couple of fans.

Jay Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser is NOT...

..."confirming" that the alleged attack occured.

Next time, maybe you should wait for actual facts. I know that bloggers here are trolling for hits, but your post in an embarassment to journalism.

Updyke is a liar and a self-confessed criminal. I absolutely do not believe him. If you were familiar with the store, the traffic patterns on the highway and the holes in his story, you wouldn't believe him either.

Dear CBS: Better bloggers, please.

This author's diction is profusely grandiose for an article about a man who was beaten up for poisoning a tree because he likes his football a bit too much.  I couldn't understand half the words, and I'm not even from Alabama!
