The sordid tale of Harvey Updyke, the Alabama enthusiast currently accused of poisoning the Toomer's Corner oak trees at Auburn, has taken a rather disturbing turn. According to Glennon Threatt, Updyke's attorney, Updyke was attacked behind a nearby gas station after his hearing today, and he was briefly hospitalized with a head injury.

According to al.com, Updyke received a split brow, facial bruises, and a possible concussion; there's also some concern that Updyke may have lost consciousness at some point. Threatt announced the attack on Paul Finebaum's radio show shortly after it occurred, and if that sounds odd, let's keep in mind that Updyke is only facing trial because he himself confessed to the poisoning on Finebaum's show back in January.

Details on the attack are still thin; there's no video of the attack, much less a suspect or a name or anything, but Jay Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser is confirming that the attack did occur, and that Updyke is currently meeting with the Opelika Police Department.

It's a shame, but not a surprise, that a rivalry so inflamed with passion and consequence has turned so, so ugly. Neither Updyke's alleged poisoning of the oaks nor his subsequent attack have any place in American society, much less the day-to-day travails of college fandom. It's infantile savagery, the type of loutish behavior that debases the entire state of Alabama in one fell swoop. The choice is clear: Alabama and Auburn fans must either grow up or resign themselves to being the hysterical, bloodthirsty manbabies of college football.

Really...just look at that guy. LOL. What kind of dumbazz would poison oak trees that are hundreds of years old? Just shoot him in the head and throw him in a hole.

Gotta agree with Goose on this one.. Until we see some evidence, I'm going with, "You're a tree killer, AND a liar."

Would someone tell this Jacobi dude that his job is to report not editorialize.

If we wanted his opinion we'd know his name and ask for it.

Any Goofball that listens more than 10 minutes to the Paul Finebaum show is a complete fool! The dude provokes hatred and disrepect towards anything not SEC. I love the best football conference in the land, but there are limitations on the passion, even involving a horrid statue of St. Nick! He appears to be a "poor man's" Paul Bryant! If that's possible.Uncle Nick; just try to be .500 in the loaded western division of your vaunted league in 2011.

Adam: You have no clue about the Alabama/Auburn rivalry. This is one person that made a fool out of himself and you think the whole entire Auburn and Alabama fan base is a bunch of sour sports who have no class. The majority of us do so it's a little Thayer Evans-like to accuse all the fans of being bloodthirsty manbabies. Obviously you sound like the uneducated one writing about this lame person with your judgmental comments.

True or not, this was (is) to be expected.  For Harvey Updyke, or anyone, for that matter, to not expect some sort of retaliation in today's society would be just plain ignorant.  (note for reactionary posters:  not condoning, just commenting!)

You can't so much as honk your horn at someone else these days without the threat of a gun being brandished in the other car.  Brave enough to tell someone they're being rude in a grocery store?  They're more likely to send a family posse your way than to simply apologize.  And these are just small day-to-day things.  Do something as stupid as this tree poisoning and openly admit to it?  You're just asking for it, man.  No one should be surprised if this guy gets his head taken off.

You can blindly (and ignorantly, I might add) hope in the good of society, but as for me, I'll keep my head down and play it safe.
