The sordid tale of Harvey Updyke, the Alabama enthusiast currently accused of poisoning the Toomer's Corner oak trees at Auburn, has taken a rather disturbing turn. According to Glennon Threatt, Updyke's attorney, Updyke was attacked behind a nearby gas station after his hearing today, and he was briefly hospitalized with a head injury.

According to al.com, Updyke received a split brow, facial bruises, and a possible concussion; there's also some concern that Updyke may have lost consciousness at some point. Threatt announced the attack on Paul Finebaum's radio show shortly after it occurred, and if that sounds odd, let's keep in mind that Updyke is only facing trial because he himself confessed to the poisoning on Finebaum's show back in January.

Details on the attack are still thin; there's no video of the attack, much less a suspect or a name or anything, but Jay Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser is confirming that the attack did occur, and that Updyke is currently meeting with the Opelika Police Department.

It's a shame, but not a surprise, that a rivalry so inflamed with passion and consequence has turned so, so ugly. Neither Updyke's alleged poisoning of the oaks nor his subsequent attack have any place in American society, much less the day-to-day travails of college fandom. It's infantile savagery, the type of loutish behavior that debases the entire state of Alabama in one fell swoop. The choice is clear: Alabama and Auburn fans must either grow up or resign themselves to being the hysterical, bloodthirsty manbabies of college football.

Does this really surprise anybody other than it happened in late April instead of late Feb?  The guy attempted to kill two Live Oaks which have been campus landmarks at Auburn for nearly 100 years.  I don't feel any sympathy for Updike at all.

He probably faked the whole thing to gain sympathy. Conveniently there were no surveillance cameras and no witnesses. The dude's crazy enough to poison trees because a team he hated won the national championship (even though his team won it a year before, what a sore loser and baby), who's to say he's not crazy enough to fake this whole event to gain some sympathy from the court, public, and media. Maybe if he can paint himself as a victim he thinks the courts, media, and public will go easier on him. The guy's a jerk - who's to say he's not lying.

Maybe Harvey Updyke was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Maybe he's simply a victim of a random act of violence!?!  Wink

I'm familiar with this area and the service station,  there's no reason in the world to go behind the place,  unless you're emptying a trash can.  Then the clerk said, Harvey left then returned asking them if they had a surveilence camera back there.  I don't blame people for thinking we're all nuts down here.  This gets dumber by the day

Love how someone mentions southerners, when as mentioned, Dodgers fans assaulted a Giants fan. Has nothing to do with Southerners. Too many people are morons in general.

This is just some writer being outrageous...

This is just some unknown writer being outrageous.  He's appealing to the editors so he gets his story published.  My guess is he's been sittin' around the office for a while, with nothing worthy of the website and so he puts all his anger into this article.  There's a Giants fan in San Fran in a coma cuz of a couple of Dodger fans, and we're the "manbabies?"  So tryin' to kill a tree is more substantial than tryin' to kill a dude?  This guy, Updyke, just got his ears boxed a little bit... shoot, we all need that every once in a while.  This is what happens when you don't think about the consequences of your actions.  He'll be ok.  He's an idiot, but it's just a tree.  The rest of his life is probably going to suck.  Oh well.  Think about those kids whose dad is in a coma cuz of a baseball game.  Stuff like that makes me want to burn all of my jerseys and hats.
