Janoris Jenkins busted with pot again

Florida cornerback Janoris Jenkins has once again been busted by Gainesville police for marijuana possession. Barely more than a month after Jenkins appeared in a courtroom to deal with an arrest for marijuana possession, Jenkins was caught with a joint in his car early Saturday morning. According to the St. Petersburg Times, Jenkins had been smoking a cigar in a car parked in a parking lot. When Jenkins saw the police, he put the cigar down, got out of the car and walked away.

The police then found the cigar in the center console of the car and found that it was not filled with tobacco. According to the Gainesville police department, Jenkins was given a notice to appear in court for possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.

What remains to be seen is how this will be handled by Florida. Jenkins did not serve any kind of suspension due to his first marijuana arrest, as he was already missing spring practice following shoulder surgery. Still, new head coach Will Muschamp has said that he plans on instilling a new culture in Gainesville, and one that doesn't turn a blind eye as often as Urban Meyer seemed to.

Another factor to keep in mind, while Jenkins has been nailed with weed twice in the last three months, this is his third arrest since coming to Florida. He was also arrested for resisting arrest and getting into a fight outside a Gainesville night club in May 2009. I'm not sure Muschamp will take that offense into consideration seeing as how it took place before he came to Florida, but you have to think that being arrested twice in three months is not the best way to introduce yourself to your new head coach.

There's a good chance that if Muschamp decides to make an example of somebody, then it could be Jenkins.

A few years ago after I had remarked that Florida was a sleezy program with plenty of arrests- Gator fans said that was old news-  Yeah right -its still a sleezy program.

Janoris Jenkins busted with pot again

I think you have to let him go for at least this season, you gave him a second chance and he blew it,I would also try to get him some help and get his priorities straight, then maybe reinstate him. What else has he done?...that he hasn't been caught doing,he's young and we all made mistakes in our youth,I wish him well and hopefully he'll turn this mess into a learning experience.

@Bronco4life24... I have to disagree with you on this one.  I don't even think a professional athlete should be pawned the responsibility to raise someone else's kid.  As for a college "kid", well, that's just silliness to me.  If a child or young adult needs or wants a mentor, try his or her own parents, family friends, teachers, local leaders, etc.

The fact these kids generates billions of dollars annually but remain "amateurs" with no payment is already a fine line of crazy and hypocrisy.  If we expect them to then raise someone else's children, well, then this country has major issues, one of them being some sort of salary for being a surrogate babysitter for ineffective parenting.

Not to get on a rant BUT... I think parents need to start looking in the mirror a little more for parental support than some random 19 year old football player, Justin Bieber or whoever else. Pretty sad indeed.

Ching-cha...that's the sound of cash register working backwards. That is also the sound of Janoris Jenkins' future earning power in the NFL. With the lockout and teams' supposedly increase emphasis on drafting "quality" character as well as players, Jenkins has pretty much hit rock bottom...for crying out loud, Cam Newton and Ryan Mallett--two players with more talent--are getting lambasted--and dropping in mock drafts--for Newton smiling too much at cameras and Mallett's alledged drug use. Does Jenkins not see that this latest arrest--his third strike--and the fact he sat out most of last year with an injury pretty much seals his fate. As a Gator grad, a player and a coach, I understand fully the need to give young people second chances. Janoris you have had yours and then another...hope that was some primo pot because your future and hopefully your career at UF just went up in smoke...

I don't think it's the actual offense that is the issue, it's the fact that he knows he is held to a higher standard and cannot keep getting in trouble like this because he sets an example to a lot of younger kids. The fact that he has repeatedly gotten into trouble for the same thing I think is the issue. He SHOULD be suspended, or removed from the team, but will have to see how Muschamp handles his first headcase.

When (not if, but when) pot is legalized in the US, it will still be illegal to drive under the influence of it.  Plus, it's against the law NOW, so you have to pay the price if you break the law.  Any self-respecting team would kick this guy off the team.

means83: Whether one buys into your arguments about the "positive" attributes of pot or not, it IS still illegal in all 50 states (except for medicinal use in some states), and it IS still a mind altering substance.  You say that if the young man was busted for drunk driving he should be thrown off the team, but not for getting high on pot.  "Drunk driving, yes, I agree 100%."  Well I guarantee that if he was sitting in a car in a parking lot blowing a blunt the size of a cigar, he was gonna be driving that car soon enough while he was still high as a kite.  Would you like to be driving through an intersection with your family crossing that guy's path at 45 MPH right after he finished that huge joint?  I doubt it.  The kid has been busted three times while on scholarship at Florida, twice in the last few months.  Does anyone really doubt there's a more deserving student athlete out there that Florida could give that scholarship too?
