Nebraska will be making the move to the Big Ten in 2011, and it looks like head coach Bo Pelini will be making the move with a brand new contract. According to the Lincoln Journal Star, Pelini is now working under a new deal that begain on March 1. While the new contract only adds one year to the deal Pelini had been coaching under it also sees Pelini getting a bump in pay.

In fact, with the new raise, Pelini will now be the third-highest paid head coach in the Big Ten, trailing only Ohio State's Jim Tressel and Iowa's Kirk Ferentz.

Under terms of a deal that became effective March 1, the fourth-year Nebraska head coach's annual base salary increased to $2.775 million, a raise of $425,000 from his 2010 contract. Under the new five-year deal, Pelini's base salary will escalate $100,000 annually, reaching $3.175 million in 2015.

The length of Pelini's contract was extended one year, and his performance bonuses increased significantly. The new deal also more than doubles the amount NU would owe Pelini if he is fired.

Pelini also had a clause removed from his former contract that would have seen him receive a $500,000 bonus should he still be coaching the team in 2015. Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne pointed out that due to a new law, schools can no longer give head coaches bonuses based on a team's academic performance. So Osborne said that the new deal makes up for the income lost there, and that Nebraska also just wanted to reward Pelini for the job he's done since taking over the program.

Pelini can also earn performance bonuses for winning the Legends Division without appearing in the Big 10 title game ($100,000), reaching the Big 10 Championship Game ($200,000), or winning the title game ($350,000). Should Nebraska reach the BCS title game, Pelini would get a $350,000 bonus, but that would go up to $650,000 if Nebraska won the BCS title game.

If that's not enough, Pelini also gets use of a private jet for 16 hours a year for personal travel.

If Pelini is fired before the contract ends, he'll get $1.8 million annually for the remainder of the deal.

Bo Pelini has a new contract

Very much deserved and am happy as a clam we have him locked in for multiple years. The way the team is shaping up with the great chance of actually having a consistent offense, on top of the Big 10 having some issuse at the top (OSU) NU could really make some noise in their first year. Now that Watson is gone (thank you Bo) the offense will actually be taylored to the talent. The only conference game that really worries me this year is the first one at Wisconsin and possibly Mich. State.

Go Big Red!!

Bo Pelini has a new contract

Aside from all the hateful comments here, this was probably going to happen eventually.  I know the Huskers blew two BCS opportunities, but Bo is one of the best defensive minds in the game.  Just wish we didn't have to bump him up past $3 mil/year so fast, since that's a coach gets after winning the national title.  Bo hasn't done that yet.  He should stay around 2.2 until he brings the trophy home.  And I hope Carl stays a while, since he'll be a head coach somewhere soon enough.  Something good is in the works.

Mr. Jayhasker; I'm so grateful that you cleared up this whole title mess for the rest of us. Could you please explain the Best Buy analogy again that $15 bucks doesn't equate into $10 American dollars. I was all set to hitch a ride to my local BB store and attempt @ changing a 10 for a twenty but with your brilliant input, you have spared me the embarrassment. Thanks Bro, and I would wish your team a hearty "Good Luck" when you scuffle to a 5-win campaign.

Bo Pelini has a new contract

Nebraska's AD Tom Osbourne is nobody's fool. He has let the recruits of America know, Nebraska is open for Big Ten business. Get in line Tom, the BCS will take care of Ohio State first, then look down the Big Ten line to see who deserves their well earned favors next.

Osborne has made a long-term commitment to Pelini and those recuits, with a neatly packaged 1.8 million dollar escape clause if he needs it. Told you he was nobody's fool.

Good luck in the Big Ten Bo, your going to need it!

Bo Pelini has a new contract

The last thing we heard from Bo Pelini was his yells of anguish when the Washington Huskies grabbed Pelini by the throat and shook him hard.

The Huskies shook Pelini just like someone shook him to his senses after his "BCS! That's why they make that call!" rage after the 2009 Texas/Nebraska Big XII Championship game. Pelini went from BCS hero to BCS zero in less time than the one second the officials added to the clock to let Texas kick the winning field goal. The only difference between the two shakes, the Huskies didn't  say "Shut your mouth and get in-line!" like the person who grabbed him after the Texas screwin' did.

Many wondered, after his 'anti' BCS rant, a rant every college football fan who hates the BCS echoes but doesn't have Pelini's stage to yell it from, how far into hell the BCS would kick him. And hell it was.

The BCS sent his 10-3 Nebraska bowl team to beautiful, soggy, San Diego to play the 6-6 forth place PAC 10 Washington Huskies in the Holiday Bowl. What!? The "we stomped them 56-21 already" Huskies!? "After we just barely lost to the 10-2 Oklahoma Sooners 23-20 in the 2010 Big XII Championship game"!? Somehow, we knew this wasn't going to be good for Nebraska. Pelini's Nebraska team played lackadaisical in that 19-7 loss to Washington.

Lately, it's been a tough row to hoe for Nebraska in the Big XII, having to play the BCS beloved Oklahoma and Texas teams. It won't get any better for Pelini when Nebraska moves to the BCS darling Big Ten Conference, home of the most beloved BCS team in the history of the BCS, the Ohio State Buckeyes. The BCS loves the Buckeyes just a wee bit more than the Sooners.

Thankfully, unless purgatory is where the BCS decides to keep him, he does have one good thing to look forward to. Unlike what has happened to Nebraska the last two years in the Big XII, Pelini will be able to tell his Big Ten recruits " We can finish second here, second in the Big Ten, and get to a BCS Bowl."

Good Luck in the Big Ten Bo, you're gonna need it.

When he gets his arse beat by Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State all the time, Corn-Shuckster fans will be demanding that he give that money back! TO HELL WITH !

Bo Pelini has a new contract

Nebraska could very easily win the division and not make it to the title game.  See the Big 10 last year: 3 teams tied for the conference title.  Break that down into two divisions and, any way you do so, you end up with at lease two teams that have the same record in the same division.  Only one can go to the tile game, so the other is left with a division title but no appearance in the championship game.  It actually happend a couple of years ago in the Big XII South, I believe that UT, OU, and Texas Tech were all tied come the end of the year.

As for the flight hours dilemma proposed, simple logic tells me that if he only has one hour of personal use left on his jet, he is not allowed to fly to somewhere that is 3 hours away.  Think of it this way: you have $10.00 and want to buy a CD.  The CD cost $15 dollars.  Best Buy is not going to cut the CD in thirds and sell you two of them, you're just not going to get the CD at all.

Bo Pelini has a new contract

Could someone explain how Pelini could get 100K for winning the Legends Division and NOT appear in the Big 10 title game? Am I missing something or don't the champs of the Leader and Legend divisions face each other in the title game. I knew the stupid names the fossils in the conference office came up with would make this league more of a joke than it already was, but this has gone too far. Also, that private jet thing must be really difficult to iron out if the 16 hours expires in mid-flight. What? Does the pilot have orders to land @ the nearest airport and toss Bo off and let him find his way back to Lincoln on his own? Or possibly a parachute is the answer!

Bo Pelini has a new contract

Now Pelini just has to figure out a way to win a game that matters. Firing OC Watson was a good start.
