Zach Maynard named Cal's starting QB

It seems that Zach Maynard's decision to transfer from Buffalo to Cal before the 2010 season was a good one. After sitting out the 2010 season, Maynard entered the spring in a battle to replace Cal quarterback Kevin Riley, and according to a press release from the school on Saturday, it's a competition that Maynard has won.

“Zach showed a tremendous amount of upside during spring practice and is the quarterback that gives us the best opportunity to win football games,” said Cal head coach Jeff Tedford in the release. “He has the ability to both throw and run the ball effectively, giving us another dimension at that position that we haven’t had in a while.”

“I’m excited and honored to have been named the starting quarterback at Cal,” said Maynard. “I enjoyed competing for the job with some excellent competitors during spring practice and will continue to work hard to keep the starting role. I have an excellent opportunity to help lead this football team and plan to take full advantage of it.”

I should point out that Maynard's decision to leave Buffalo for Cal wasn't related to playing time, as Maynard was the starter at Buffalo before he left. No, Maynard's decision came on the heels of Keenan Allen's decision to change his commitment from Alabama to Cal before the 2010 season. Allen, who finished 2010 with 46 receptions for 490 yards and 5 touchdowns as a freshman, is Maynard's half-brother.

Which I'm pretty sure means that any touchdown thrown from Maynard to Allen this season will be on a route perfected in a front yard or living room a long time ago.

Amen and that's a roger on that.  The PAC-10 is most definitely a better QB-mill than the SEC.

@Manboobs1971 "Wow how Cal has fallen...a QB from Buffalo!  Really, the PAC 10 is only a few steps above the BIG EAST, they are a JOKE!"

Just an FYI since you are football illertate, obvously. Jerry Rice came from Mississippi Valley State; a division IIA school. Jerry Rice was selected to the Pro Bowl 13 times, was All-Pro 11 times and won 3 superbowls. If you think you have to come from the SEC, BIG 10..etc (or even Div 1 football for that matter) to be good in the pros, you're a fool.

The Pac 10 has produced better NFL QB's than the SEC has.

The Pac 10 / Pac 12 is becoming a joke? No one's saying it's the SEC but everyone is predicting that at least 3 Pac12 QBs are first rounders in the 2012 NFL draft, and that's ignoring A) Oregon's QB who nearly won a national championship after being 3rd string on his own team a year ago, B) Ariz State's QB who people are touting, and C) Maynard who has great upside for Cal

Mansion played some last year.  He was terrible.  It makes sense that Tedford opened up the competition because Mansion is a senior and didn't play well at all.

For all of you not so knowledgeable fans out there (not), Riley graduated, so Cal had to find another starting QB.  I wonder what ever happened to Brock Mansion.  He was suppose to be the next great Call QB, but Mansion, now a senior, never played very much.  Cal is going to need all the help it can get this season, playing games at Washington, Oregon, Stanford, and Arizona State, and hosting USC and Utah.  Cal and Colorado, both members of the Pac 12, also play a non-conference game against each other.  I guess only in Berkeley can you play a non-conference game against a conference opponent.

i think this is a good choice for the bears. Maynard to Allen is going to be a sweet combo. Dont be suprised if Cal is near or a top the Pac 12 this year.

Okay. I didn't see that coming, but I guess a change was in order for you bears. Riley isn't any stud or beast so maybe at least the new guy will figure out the offense and you guys can implement the injury faking tactics on offense. Cuz you're Still a bitch in my book.
