Almost as soon as the news leaked that new West Virginia offensive coordinator and coach-in-waiting Dana Holgorsen had been kicked out of a Charleston-area casino in the wee hours of a weekday night, rumors started flying that this was hardly the first such incident for the offensive whiz. And now one West Virginia newspaper is willing to put those rumors into print.

The Huntington Herald-Dispatch is reporting that Holgorsen has been involved in "as many as six" alcohol-related incidents in the past six months alone. As they recap:
The Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register reported Saturday that Holgorsen allegedly was asked to leave both a bar inside Oglebay Park and, later, at Wheeling Island Hotel, Casino and Racetrack earlier this year.

Sources say there was also an incident at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W.Va., which involved Holgerson being told to leave and not come back. And, then, there are rumors of three incidents at the Morgantown hotel in which he lives, including being banned from the hotel bar.

Also, there are allegations he was asked to leave the Union Pub And Grill in Huntington on Oct. 28, 2008.
Even if not all of these allegations are proven accurate, clearly there's enough veracity here to declare the initial casino incident far from an isolated occurence. Even worse, when there's this much evidence of a pattern of this kind of behavior, it throws serious doubts on Holgorsen's statement Wednesday that he would "not put [him]self in that situation again."

To be fair to Holgorsen, he has not been arrested in conjunction with any of these incidents, and there's no record of his performance during his initial spring practice with the Mountaineers being anything less than professional. (In fact, judging by the explosion of points and yards in the WVU spring game, Holgorsen's arrival appears to have been a smashing success.) Taken individually, no one incident even rises to the level of being suspension-worthy, much less a fireable offense.

But taken as a whole, it's difficult to argue Holgorsen's pattern of behavior doesn't indicate that the Mountaineers are handing their program (and millions of dollars) over to a man with legitimate self-control issues. It's far, far too early to make any judgments about Holgorsen's fitness for leadership, or, certainly, his eventual Mountaineer tenure. But if this most recent run-in at the casino doesn't prove to be a turning point for him, that time for judgment -- from an already embarrased athletic director Oliver Luck -- may arrive in an awful hurry.

Sounds like another Gillespe, or however you spell the guy's name who used to coach at Kentucky. Good coach (if in the right job) but a big problem with the booze.

Read the article from a man in the town that hates WVU and you will see it is full of allegations....and a "I can't be sure" and other holes. Poor journalism. Real hatred.

The Skullet is the perfect mountaineer and we are just coming to realize that!!!  He's a drunken hillbilly!!!  Why would anybody assume his job is in jeopardy - it's exactly the kind of exemplar that WVU needs to represent their fine state!

Anyone defending this behavior is being ridiculous. To get kicked out of a bar you have to be 1) In a brawl with another person or 2) being so rude, boistererous and disturbing, that management is forced to kick you out.

I cant believe this guy is going to be West Virginia's next HC. What a joke.

Hey Holger Dude; if you're being escorted out the door in any West Virginia casino, you've got some serious issues. Toss in a golf course ban and being 86'd from a hotel bar makes you a clown that needs help! My friend; it's time to check yourself and get your alcoholic butt to re-hab. Only in West Virginia with their recent idea of selling booze in the stands could this happen. My man; Morgantown is too small and WV Nation is too parochial to allow your stupid nocturnal escapades to continue. Get Help!!!

This guy is just trying to fit in. The university is known for their loud mouth, never won anything, a$$hole drunks. He will probably get a statue and a raise if he sets a couch on fire during his next bender.

We loved DH at OSU but he had the exact same problem in Stillwater. Always had a designated driver and fortunately never got a lot of press because of it. Good luck.

It's pretty obvious that this guy has some problems maintaining appropriate behavior. As a recovering alcoholic, I can say that these behaviors are consistent with being an alcoholic. I can also say that he probably will not stop this kind of behavior. He may be embarassed and stay at home and drink for awhile until the heat blows over, but he's not going to stay dry. It doesn't say what he did to be asked to leave, but I'm sure he wasn't particularly pleasant to be around. He's clearly a talented coach, but he really has no business being in a position of influence while he's not receiving help, and if he is receiving help and behaving this way...detox is probably in his future. I know in AA one of the first things that you hear is that an alcoholic is not a bad person doing horrible things, they are a sick person making bad mistakes...everyone can debate this, I'm not trying to get on a soapbox. But, I hope for this guy that he decideds to go to a meeting to check it out. It's better than getting thrown out of casinos every other week.
