With the news of Jim Tressel's resignation from Ohio State this morning, as you'd expect, it didn't take very long for people to begin speculating about who would be replacing Jim Tressel in Columbus. A name that has come up pretty often in that speculation is that of former Florida head coach and current ESPN analyst, Urban Meyer. Which is probably why Meyer did his best to nip that speculation in the bud on Monday afternoon, releasing a statment through ESPN publicist Mike Humes on Twitter.

"I am committed to ESPN and will not pursue any coaching opportunities this fall," Meyer said in the statement. "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the people at ESPN this spring and remain very excited about my role with the network this fall.

"Jim Tressel has been a respected friend and colleague for a long time. I wish Jim and his family the very best now and in the future."

Tressel out at OSU

Will this put an end to the speculation? Of course not. Some have already begun trying to read between the lines of what Meyer was saying. Which is not surprising given the nature of the college coaching world. After all, it wasn't that long ago that Jim Tressel was sending the message that he'd wouldn't be stepping down as Ohio State's head coach, and look where we are now.

So no matter what Meyer says publicly, people are still going to speculate that he'll be on the Ohio State sideline in 2012 after taking a year off from the coaching grind. You have to figure that Ohio State will approach him about the job at some point given his ties to the state of Ohio, the school, and his coaching pedigree.

Admit it, Ohio State. You'd rather have a dirty coach who wins, than a clean coach that loses. If you're not cheating, you're not trying.

All this from a Gator fan who's program was irrelevant until the 90's.  1984 & Coach Pell ring a bell.  107 major NCAA infractions...but you did go 9-1-1, congrats...then the losing started again.  This Buckeye fan does not condone what Tress did and we deserve every bit of what the NCAA hands down.   But please "crappy Ohio St program"  We were a division powerhouse while you guys were in diapers.

I SERIOUSLY doubt that ANY coach would take the job at Ohio State with the sanctions that are likely to occur there.
Recruiting power? Not with a severe reduction in scholarships.
You might be right about the Fottball Program, but the OSU football program is going to take a hit that NO big-name coach is going to want any part of.
Urban cannot resist OSU. He wants it bad.
this also gives him a big ten platform to dominate the sec from the north. proving his coaching ability.

Just think of the recruiting power he's going to have.

Sorry OSU haters, The Ohio State University Fottball Program will be more powerful than ever

Urban Meyer sucks and so does ESPN! So do all the schools in Florida for that matter. Buckeyes should pass on this doucher and find a quality coach.

It would be a huge embarrisment if he took the ohio st job...which I don't think he will...I mean lets face it why would you leave an outstanding SEC program to go to ESPN and then turn around and go to some crap ass Big 10 sweater vest is done along with the already crappy ohio st program....looks like the buckeye nation needs to look at getting another pee wee football coach...I heard the YMCA had a great selection....hahahaha dumb ass buckeye fans.....

Meyer either goes to Penn State when Jo pa retires or he goes nowhere. He would never take over a program that is about to get hammered by the NCAA........maybe they can get Kiffin

That was an impressive, and funny comment. I couldn't figure out what you were referring to, until I read the horrendous grammar below your comment.

I think you only need a social security number to get into maybe you are jumping to premature conclusions on his OSU curriculum.

It is a bit funny seeing Ohio State fans talking about a future of dominance with Coach Meyer.  I bet that just six months ago many of these same fans were posting here constantly ranting about him running a dirty program and being nothing with Tebow or Dan Mullen.

Why would anyone believe anything Urb says?  Didn't he tell all those ND recruits he wasn't leaving?  How aobut the ones at Utah?  Florida?  Didn't he quit at Florida three times?  Urb is only faithful to two people - Urb and Timmy so this isn't over yet.
