With the news of Jim Tressel's resignation from Ohio State this morning, as you'd expect, it didn't take very long for people to begin speculating about who would be replacing Jim Tressel in Columbus. A name that has come up pretty often in that speculation is that of former Florida head coach and current ESPN analyst, Urban Meyer. Which is probably why Meyer did his best to nip that speculation in the bud on Monday afternoon, releasing a statment through ESPN publicist Mike Humes on Twitter.

"I am committed to ESPN and will not pursue any coaching opportunities this fall," Meyer said in the statement. "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the people at ESPN this spring and remain very excited about my role with the network this fall.

"Jim Tressel has been a respected friend and colleague for a long time. I wish Jim and his family the very best now and in the future."

Tressel out at OSU

Will this put an end to the speculation? Of course not. Some have already begun trying to read between the lines of what Meyer was saying. Which is not surprising given the nature of the college coaching world. After all, it wasn't that long ago that Jim Tressel was sending the message that he'd wouldn't be stepping down as Ohio State's head coach, and look where we are now.

So no matter what Meyer says publicly, people are still going to speculate that he'll be on the Ohio State sideline in 2012 after taking a year off from the coaching grind. You have to figure that Ohio State will approach him about the job at some point given his ties to the state of Ohio, the school, and his coaching pedigree.

Urban Meyer won't pursue a job this fall

I'm an alumnus and I am for getting every one of these thugs throw off the team. no matter how many. these aren't ten-year ols, these are grown up(!?) posuer thugs who are all about "gettin what's mines(sic)"
throw 'em out.
this is what happened :
A good, not perfect, man lost his job today because of his instinct to protect young men he believed in.
These men turned out to be thugs that didn't deserve that loyalty and a Good man paid a terrible price. The next step? Throw ALL of the offending thugs off the team. Excise the Cancer.

the process will be Fickell completing the season Urban negotiating behind the scenes as the NCAA works out the penalties.
These penalties will be less rthan many expect . Especially after the A.D gets the axe.
then Urban, after the Bowl season can come in for recruiting and get his staff together. The only remaining coach will be Fickell for the following season.

Urban cannot resist OSU. He wants it bad.
this also gives him a big ten platform to dominate the sec from the north. proving his coaching ability.

Just think of the recruiting power he's going to have.

Sorry OSU haters, The Ohio State University Fottball Program will be more powerful than ever.Wink

Urban Meyer won't pursue a job this fall

Of course Coach Meyer will not pursue a job this fall.  He is going to wait until he sees what the NCAA could do on August 12, 2011.  When the NCAA yells and does NOTHING about it (because the NCAA knew what was going on that is why the NCAA ALLOWED the players to play in the Sugar Bowl) and OHIO STATE suspended the players for 5 games.  Coach Tressell should have resigned when he FORWARDED the emails to TP's mentor and for that reason alone.  The players in questiion SOLD or TRADED their own personal items.  NCAA rules states that student athletes (SA) should NOT be given anything that the general student body cannot receive.  Did the general student body receive a gift bag from the Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl?  Did the student body recieve BIG 10 championship rings or gold pants?  No, because the NCAA is crooked and they have set limits on what the Student Athletes receive.

Get rid of those idiots who caused Tressel to resign I'd rather lose than have them on the team.

wait a minuite, for weeks now osu fans have been yelling about how miniscule of a crime these players committed, and now your saying get rid of the players (whom in my eyes didnt do anything half as bad as the tressel cover-up that resulted), instead of the coach??  tressel has no one to blame but himself, if he would have reported it like he was supposed to, there would have been no reason for anyone to ever call for his resignation in the first place

Let just say this it seems every body is couting on Meyer going to OSU but lets not forget that there may be other openings in College football that may have more money and should not have any sanctions agaist them. Like if Texas lest say Mac Brown does not have a great year I see them replacing him with Meyer because he is the biggest name out there. Also maybe Meyer gets use to being with ESPN and does not go back to coaching because he does not have to deal with the fans, booters and the media every day and still make about $2 million just to state what he thinks.
