With the news of Jim Tressel's resignation from Ohio State this morning, as you'd expect, it didn't take very long for people to begin speculating about who would be replacing Jim Tressel in Columbus. A name that has come up pretty often in that speculation is that of former Florida head coach and current ESPN analyst, Urban Meyer. Which is probably why Meyer did his best to nip that speculation in the bud on Monday afternoon, releasing a statment through ESPN publicist Mike Humes on Twitter.

"I am committed to ESPN and will not pursue any coaching opportunities this fall," Meyer said in the statement. "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the people at ESPN this spring and remain very excited about my role with the network this fall.

"Jim Tressel has been a respected friend and colleague for a long time. I wish Jim and his family the very best now and in the future."

Tressel out at OSU

Will this put an end to the speculation? Of course not. Some have already begun trying to read between the lines of what Meyer was saying. Which is not surprising given the nature of the college coaching world. After all, it wasn't that long ago that Jim Tressel was sending the message that he'd wouldn't be stepping down as Ohio State's head coach, and look where we are now.

So no matter what Meyer says publicly, people are still going to speculate that he'll be on the Ohio State sideline in 2012 after taking a year off from the coaching grind. You have to figure that Ohio State will approach him about the job at some point given his ties to the state of Ohio, the school, and his coaching pedigree.

With the program in turmoil and suspensions (at the very least looming) Meyer would have to be desperate to take the job now.He could have the job at a later date when the dust settles and he can recruit the type of players it takes to win. If there are restrictions, why jump in now. There are other teams in the Big 10 (12) that are attractive to play for (Nebraska, Penn State, Wisconsin, or Michigan State) and they may claim the best recruits for the next couple of years. Meyer can grab this job down the road if he wants it.

What makes you think Meyer is still capable of winning? Have you forgotten his last year at Florida where he was basically disinterested in coaching or putting forth a winning effort.

They should just join the SEC because that is the level of their integrity. Besides, kinda hard to win when you don't have scholarships. Doesn't matter either way, though. Brady Hoke and UM will kick the snot out of THE Ohio State Community College. Go Blue!

I pray you are not that ignorant to believe that if Meyer didn't have Tewbow he would have dismissed Newton cause he would have done what other so called Great coaches do look the other way till it blows up and then they either resign or get fired just as Capt cardigan he should have been fired a long time ago but he is depicted as some saint by the fans of OSU as a father figure to the atheletes when in actuality you are only safe as long as your productive to the school if Newton was the starting QB in Shamesville he wouldn't have been Dismissed No coach in 1-A has any integrity they all lie cheat and steal and then move on too the next factory that needs a supervisor
