With the news of Jim Tressel's resignation from Ohio State this morning, as you'd expect, it didn't take very long for people to begin speculating about who would be replacing Jim Tressel in Columbus. A name that has come up pretty often in that speculation is that of former Florida head coach and current ESPN analyst, Urban Meyer. Which is probably why Meyer did his best to nip that speculation in the bud on Monday afternoon, releasing a statment through ESPN publicist Mike Humes on Twitter.

"I am committed to ESPN and will not pursue any coaching opportunities this fall," Meyer said in the statement. "I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the people at ESPN this spring and remain very excited about my role with the network this fall.

"Jim Tressel has been a respected friend and colleague for a long time. I wish Jim and his family the very best now and in the future."

Tressel out at OSU

Will this put an end to the speculation? Of course not. Some have already begun trying to read between the lines of what Meyer was saying. Which is not surprising given the nature of the college coaching world. After all, it wasn't that long ago that Jim Tressel was sending the message that he'd wouldn't be stepping down as Ohio State's head coach, and look where we are now.

So no matter what Meyer says publicly, people are still going to speculate that he'll be on the Ohio State sideline in 2012 after taking a year off from the coaching grind. You have to figure that Ohio State will approach him about the job at some point given his ties to the state of Ohio, the school, and his coaching pedigree.

Luke Fickell will succeed as a coach but in the OSU pressure cooker he won't be hired especially if Meyer wants the job.

Modern Journalism = "Decide what you, the reporter, want to have happen and then relentlessly spread the rumor that it's happening until it actually does." This also involves backing your targets into strategic corners where they have no choice but to issue non-denial denials. After all, sooner or later what you've predicted will come true, and then you can claim you scooped it.

Yeah, no kidding gulfcoast. He clearly said "this year". I don't know if he would want it or not, but he will be interviewed at some point. My guess on if he would take it or not depends on how big the hammer is that the NCAA uses to fix this problem. I have thought about Urban replacing JT since this whole thing came out, and I am still not sure that is the best thing for tOSU. I can see them trying to poach an ex-assistant under JT from another school though (MSU I am looking at you).

I thought Meyer was committed to his family and that is why he resigned at Florida.  Depending on how Fickell does, tOSU may not need a new coach at all.  IF they do decide to go in another direction, obviously Meyer would be at the top of the list of candidates.  He went out with a wimper at UF, so the question becomes when does his competitive fire return?  And, can he get his daughter's permission.

LOL!  This statement means nothing.  Ohio State immediately announced that assistant coach Luke Fickell will be the interim head coach for all of 2011-12.  The search will not begin until the end of this up-coming season.  I don't know if he will want it or get it or not, but Urban Meyer will very likely be a top potential candidate.
