Gary Pinkel has no Ohio State aspirations

Now that Jim Tressel is no longer the head coach at Ohio State, we should all probably get ready for six to eight months of speculation about who will eventually take his place in Columbus. The name we'll hear about more often than any other is Urban Meyer, but what if Meyer is serious about being done with coaching? Where will Ohio State go from there? Gary Pinkel's name is one that could come up, as Michigan was interested in the Missouri head coach, and Pinkel is from Ohio. Given the success he's had at Mizzou and his Ohio roots, it would only make sense that he be mentioned.

Though Pinkel would like to put an end to that speculation right now. Talking to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Pinkel said that Missouri is where he's at and where he plans on being.

"There's 5,000 names probably up for that," Pinkel told the paper. "I grew up in Ohio and I have great respect for Jim Tressel, too. It's very unfortunate what happened and how everything came down.

"I'm the head football coach at the University of Missouri and I'm committed to trying to continue to build the program and make it better and better. And that's what I intend to do."

Which is a lot easier said than done because, after all, there is no offer in front of Pinkel right now. The Dispatch also asked him what he would say should he get an offer, and Pinkel said he'd tell Ohio State the same thing. Which is no doubt exactly what Missouri fans want to hear from their head coach, but depending on what happens with Ohio State when the NCAA is done with the school, it may not be as easy to tell Ohio State no if a real offer eventually does come along.

Pinkel will be the next Ohio State football head coach once all is settled down with the NCAA. No need to say more it is in the tea leaves.

The program supercedes all controversy.  There are only a few coaches that would turn down the job at Ohio State.  Think of the other elite schools...Florida, USC, Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma.  Any other coach would be a fool to turn down an offer.  The legacy, adding your name to the likes of Woody Hayes, Earl Bruce, John Cooper (OK, maybe..but the man won games and sent a ton of players to the NFL.  2-10-1 vs Michigan weighs him down) and Jim Tressel.  Even if you're not from here, you'll quickly breathe Scarlet and Gray and drink the Kool Aid.  You, my friend, are the only game in town!  Oh, no disrespect to Thad Matta, we have a basketball team too...

I'm not sure about Miami, but the Sooners WERE NOT 'hit' by the NCAA during the 1990s.   Oklahoma was never charged with any infractions whatsoever during that entire decade..... (probably because they were so bad and lost so many games during the coaching careers of Gibbs, Shellenberger, and Blake.)

I'm a Kansas fan, and I can't stand Mizzoodle. But Gary Pinkel would be a fool to leave MU for Ohio State. At MU, Pinkel doesn't have any coaching legends breathing down his neck, and he won't have massive NCAA sanctions hanging over his head.

I think Pinkel would stay at Missouri if offered the Ohio State job, right now he is in a good situation.

Why exactly would a coach move from a program going in the right direction to a program going in the wrong direction?

every other coach that might have a desire to coach for the bucks is gonna play a waiting game and see how hard the ncaa hits osu. if the ncaa hits them like the sooners n miami got hit in the 90s then your gonna see a young no name coach take a high risk high reward and coach the bucks. but no high profile coach is gonna wanna come thru during the years when the ncaa first inital hits them 2-4 year after the verdict. mix in the fact that osu said their not gonna look for one till after the season osu is gonna be in a world of hurt if the ncaa comes on them hard and from the looks of it esp with TP whipping around in 350z osu could slip for some years.
