With the combination of the renovations to their football stadium and the recent success under head coach Mike Gundy, things are going pretty well for the Cowboys in Stillwater. For a big-time football program, there is no better opportunity to expand your operation than when things are moving in the right direction. On Tuesday, Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder announced that the University will begin contraction on a new indoor practice facility "approximately August, 1, 2011."

The Sherman E. Smith Training Center will be adjacent to the new grass and turf practice fields already under construction, and located just north of Boone Pickens Stadium. The school announced the approximate cost for the indoor facility at $16 million, while the practice fields and fencing will be completed for $3 million.

Sherman Smith was a close friend of Boone Pickens, and the school said their relationship dates back to the 1940's. Smith passed away on June 6, 2011, and his gift was originally termed as an endowment. Since his passing, the Smith family allowed their gift to help with the construction of the new indoor practice facility. The school will continue to fundraise for the practice fields project.

Oklahoma State announces new indoor facility

Didn't they make this same exact announcement years ago!?!
-very 2nd rate to me.
Pickens says what he wants OSU to be, not what they are in reality.
He wants them to be a Championship contender.
-0 for 15 in BIG XII championship game appearances.  0 BCS bowl appearances.

OSU is a wannabe program, until they actually do more than be respectable.
Having great facilities has not improved OSU's championship abilities, in the last few years.
Having a great stadium has not improved OSU's ticket sales, in the last few years.

When your in the same State as a top 5 program in college foootball history, you have no choice but to be wannabes.
I say the same about Auburn, but they are slowly stepping out of 'Bama's shadow.  Look what they have accomplished, regardless of any controversy.

Oklahoma State announces new indoor facility

I grew up as Sooner fan and went to Oklahoma State, loved living in Stillwater, and never had any envy of any other school or ever regretted not going to OU. I chose Tulane University for law school even though I could have went to OU. Oklahoma State was in the top five when I went there with Thurman Thomas, Leslie O'Neal, Barry Sanders and several other future NFL players there. From what I see, many Sooner fans simply don't like the fact that the Cowboys are competitive and represent yet another potential pitfall as they make their way through a very, very tough Big XII (X). I am probably unusual in that I am a fan of both programs and when they play each other generally root for whoever still has BCS title hopes.

T. Boone Pickens and their athletic success have dramatically changed the facilities available. Anybody who doesn't think that first-rate facilities are an asset on the recruiting trial matter is simply fooling themsleves, particularly if you are competing for recruits in Texas and Oklahoma that have so many big-time programs to choose from. The artist's rendition lays out an impressive grouping of facilities for the football program. Hopefully, that translates into better athletes and more gridiron success.

Oklahoma State announces new indoor facility

I'm not really sure what being a "wannabe" has to do with building a new indoor practice facility and practice fields.

Additionally, I went to Oklahoma State out of Houston, TX - and I was never once jealous of anyone living in Norman or any other college town. I don't think I, or any of my peers, could have been happier anywhere outside of Stillwater.

I am sorry but they are wannabe's...I know I will get flamed but you have to understand...I was born and raised in Oklahoma and get so tired of all the jealousy from them toward OU fans.  There is a hatred that runs deep...I usually don't even respond to them but truly they can be so very annoying.  There seems to be such delusion...Anyway, have a nice day...Boomer Sooner and that is all...
