USC suspends Marc Tyler for at least one game

If you missed it this weekend, USC running back Marc Tyler popped up on TMZ last week and made some comments that were bound to get him in trouble. Specifically he joked that USC pays its players, saying that Trojans make more money in school than they do in the pros. Well, in a move that should shock no one, Tyler has now been suspended by the Trojans for at least the season opener.

"I was very disappointed when I learned of Marc Tyler's inappropriate comments that were captured by the media last week," said Lane Kiffin in a statement. "That is not the way that we expect our players to represent USC and our team.

"I have consulted with athletic director Pat Haden and I am suspending Marc for our upcoming season opener and potentially further, and in the meantime I am also suspending him from all team activities.

"Although Marc may find this punishment severe, it is imperative we continue to have a high standard for player behavior.  Marc needs to work hard to show us that he can meet the standards of being a USC football player."

Tyler released a statement as well.

"I want to apologize for embarrassing USC, my teammates and coaches," said Tyler. "I am disappointed that I let down all the people who have supported me as I have been working through some personal issues.  After meeting today with Mr. Haden and Coach Kiffin, I realize how my behavior and my statements, even though I was joking, can reflect poorly on so many people.  As a veteran player, I should know that my job is to be an example for the younger guys.  I accept my punishment and I regret that I will miss the opening game of my senior year.   I am committed to doing everything the right way so that I can be reinstated to the team."

USC opens the season against Minnesota on September 3rd.

It was a cheap joke...lighten up.

Americans can be so full of it. The guy was joking, good grief. Suspended for this? If I'm Tyler, I transfer as soon as I can. Right-wing Americans become more tyrannical by the day.

@PSUisBack

*What exactly did Tyler say that was untrue? This is the same university that paid Reggie Bush and set his family up with a luxury apt. Among a slew of other violations. Some would say this was a Fraudian slip. I just think the player was being honest..........

It is very untrue that SC pays it’s student athletes, that is the untrue comment made by Tyler as a joke. Apparently you are not aware of TMZ. The are ambublance chasers and a sensational media outlet.

The university did not set Reggie Bush up in a luxury apartment. There were no one connected with the university in any way shape or form that had anything to do with Reggie Bush and his family residing in a “HOUSE” about  100 miles or so away from the university. No fans, alum, coaches, university staff was involved in the Bush case at all.

Even the stupid NCAA saw that, which is the reason they invented the term Institutional control with the case of Bush.

The person that set the Bushes up was a wanna be potential sports agent that was looking for a potential client, Reggie Bush.

I can only surmise from your statement that you did not understand or follow the case or you are unable to read and comprehend what is reported in the newspapers and TV news programs.

Out of respect for Coach Joe and the program he runs, I certainly wish you did not graduate from Penn State. That would be awful of someone that would misrepresent the facts in the Bush case as you have. Also make allegations that SC pays it’s players when you have no proof of this.

USC suspends Marc Tyler for at least one game

It's really too bad, this guy Marc Tyler signs with U$C and I'm sure he had dreams of starting in a BCS Bowl game, of a possible National Championship and maybe the NC MVP.  Then in his Junior year, the final two years at U$C when he will make his hay, U$C gets hammered for the rest of his football career there, a time when his dreams as Running Back had a real shot and clearly the action or inactions of misconduct by U$C was no joke then and killed Marc Tyler's dreams.

I mean these kids right now at U$C are the ones who are taking the hit for the mistakes of others and just keep paying the price.

Now I know his comments were stupid but don't stupid comments come along with drinking and isn't drinking part of the college experience?  So with that in mind it's clear that Marc Tyler didn't create the joke here, the joke was created by U$C and some low life TMZ reporter who set this kid up, Marc Tyler just delivered the obvious punch line and once again takes the hit.

Again it's really too bad this kid is out trying to have a good time and does really nothing wrong outside of taking a swing at a high fast ball to have a laugh.  Then get humiliated by all the real wrongs that came before him.

Oh sure suspend the guy for being honest & let the real cheaters skate.
Typical of society to victimize the innocent.
God forbid you make light of a subject the NCAA has no control of. 20 -30 years ago this statement would have been laughed about.

I'm just glad that someone mentioned what leeches TMZ are. It's gonna cost Tyler a game but he's gonna know now to stay away from those trolls.

Suspend the players?  That won't solve anything.  They'l keep doing it and think they won't get caught.  You have to cut off the source.  Suspend the coaches, scouts, athletic directors, and severly limit the acceptable activities of the boosters.  Also, penalize the university itself.  If there's still a problem, then I would target the players.  Kudos to Marc Tyler for telling it like it is.
