As criminal offenses go, "possession of alcohol by minor" ranks pretty far down the list in terms of seriousness.

But for a college football player already with one such charge on his record and a new coach promising a zero-tolerance approach to law-breaking, Florida safety Matt Elam may find some hot water all the same over his weekend citation for just that offense.

While apparently not arrested in the technical legal sense, Elam was briefly taken into custody after police officers spotted him throwing a plastic cup to the ground that was found to contain Hennessy cognac and Coke. He was released with a promise to appear in court Sunday.

The citation was Elam's second for possession of alcohol in as many years, the sophomore having been previously charged in 2010 for holding a can of the alcoholic energy drink "Four Loko" in a parking lot.

A Florida spokesman said the incident would be handled "internally," suggesting that Elam won't face a suspension. But given Will Muschamp's emphasis on the law-abiding "Florida Way" this offseason, he may be one more strike -- of any level of seriousness -- from much more substantial consequences.

Dejfreebird, you may need more help than that depending on what Dooley does with your latest arrest.

As for the drinking, sure, college kids not of age drink all the time, but most of them do not openly do it infront of an officer.  It doesnt help that sports websites will post this all over the place and normal students are not, so you cant say they are just picking on the athletes.

This is the hypocrisy of CBS and at its best.  If this was a Big 10 team, CBS would never start an article with the claim that breaking the law ranked "pretty far down the list in terms of seriousness."  If this was a Big 10 team, Gator fans and CBS would be spouting about how breaking the law shouldn't be downplayed because a criminal offense is a criminal offense regardless of its severity.  When Ohio State players sold their possessions for tattoos, Buckeye fans insisted that it wasn't a serious crime while CBS and SEC fans said that didn't matter because it was still a violation.  Wake up, CBS.  Possession of alcohol by a minor is still a crime so treat this incident like all the others.  It's your job to report the news, not defend the individual by telling readers that it wasn't very serious and that he was "not arrested in the techinical legal sense."  I guarantee that CBS would never use the phrase "not arrested in the technical legal sense" in a story about a Big 10 team.  This is why CBS is a complete joke of a sports news site outside of the south.  This blatant hypocrisy is so obvious.  The next time a Big 10 team has an alcohol violation, CBS better downplay the offense.  Ok, Muschamp, time to enforce your law abiding decree.

I can see Elam having a pretty big season this year;He sure has the credentials..I think they should suspend him for the TENN. game;God  knows we need the help..These Gainesville cops are similar to the Knoxville PD;always have the hot's on for football players..Elam should get together with Austin Johnson and some of UT's best and do some shooters

Well at least he wasn't late for church , and I'm sure he calls his momma every week so we should let him slide on this one.

Maybe Will should keep him on the bench for at least the first series of downs against Florida Atlantic or at least until they make a first down.   That'll show 'em he is serious about this zero tolerance policy!

Chomp!  Chomp!  Go Gators!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you really that stupid? What time and expense? The cop was on duty getting paid.No extra money there. The court will have about 50 other people there awaiting sentence when he gets his slap on the wrist. No extra money there. You people are the first to make that statement about other crime being commited until you are the other crime and then ask about the other crime.

The point is that this player wasn't following team rules -- one of which is not getting arrested, even if it's for something as "petty" as underage drinking. Team rules also include curfews, timeliness, attending practices, etc.  If you mess up in one of these areas, it's not illegal, but you're breaking team rules and are elibigle for punishment.
