UPDATE: Quotes from the official university release.

Chancellor Holden Thorp

"To restore confidence in the University of North Carolina and our football program, it's time to make a change," said Thorp. "What started as a purely athletic issue has begun to chip away at this University's reputation. I have been deliberate in my approach to understanding this situation fully, and I have worked to be fair to everyone involved. However, I have lost confidence in our ability to come through this without harming the way people think of this institution. Our academic integrity is paramount and we must work diligently to protect it. The only way to move forward and put this behind us is to make a change."

Thorp said the decision was not related to any change in the NCAA investigation, but that it was the result of the cumulative damage to the University's reputation over the past year.

"Athletics and football are an important part of this University, and a successful football program is essential to the overall health of our athletic program," Thorp continued. "That's why we have to put this behind us and move forward."

Athletic Director Dick Baddour

"I want to thank Butch Davis and his family for their four-plus years of service and dedication to the University and the Chapel Hill community," said Baddour. "My staff and I will work with Chancellor Thorp to transition to an interim head coach as soon as possible. It is critical that we do all we can to help our students and other staff members on the football team since preseason training camp begins in just eight days."

The timing of the dismissal comes after a change in leadership and the induction of new members to the school's Board of Trustees.  Below are some details of the new BOT members, via InsideCarolina.com

According to a source, Davis, athletic director Dick Baddour and chancellor Holden Thorp held a closed door meeting on Tuesday afternoon.

The Board of Trustees had a regularly scheduled 1 p.m. meeting on Wednesday at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill, including a session that was closed.

The Board of Trustees, a 13-member board that governs the University welcomed new leadership and new members on Wednesday. Wade H. Hargrove, a Raleigh a corporate and national media lawyer and partner with Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard LLP, was elected chairman. W. Lowry Caudill of Durham, co-founder of Magellan Laboratories and retired president of Pharmaceutical Development for Cardinal Health, and Steven J. Lerner of Chapel Hill, founder and chairman of the Board of Directors of both Capstrat and FGI and managing partner of the Blue Hill Group, were also sworn into office.

Butch Davis has been fired as head coach of the North Carolina football team, according to CBSSports.com sources.

The termination comes after the new Board of Trustees met in a closed session today to discuss the future of the football program. Davis remained employed for over a year as North Carolina has undergone NCAA investigation for both impermissible benefits and academic improprieties. Earlier this summer, North Carolina received their Notice of Allegations from the NCAA - which detailed 9 different violations being alleged against the football program.

henryk

That reminds me of the days when our red rivals were sending players to the NFL. They had all that talent and couldn't beat us - what a flip it was when Butchie couldn't keep it going - and with all that talent you speakof -he still couldn't beat the  REDS.

It's a fresh start.

There is no way in Hades Skip Holtz would make a lateral move or a step down to Carolina.  Skip is smarter than that.
jayhawk,

You are both right and wrong here.  Skip is smarter than that.  The timing is a mess and the program might be a mess for a while as well. But in no way would that move be a lateral one.  It is definitely a step up from USF at this point in time.

Butch Davis: Clown with the Browns and heel with the Heels.
The Tar Holes and Brownies. Tar Hole Brownie Butch was doomed for failure with a loser NFL team and a university that couldn't care less about football. But even with a program like the Canes, Butch was overrated.

You are talking about a football program that you obvioulsy dont follow or know anything about.  Yea, basketball gets more attention then football, but UNC football has sent alot of their players to the NFL.  In the 2011 draft they had 9 players taken.  Tht was the same amount as USC.  Overall they have had 214 players drafted over the years.   USC has the most with like 444.  I dont think that is bad for a 'basketball school'. Also, I would not say it is a run down program.  Lets see, they were ranked as high as no. 6 in the nation the season Mack Brown bolted for Texas in 1997.  They sent players like Hakeem Nicks, Gerald Sensabaugh, Julius Peppers, Ryan Sims, Alge Crumpler, Ebenezer Ekuban, Dre' Bly, Greg Ellis and of course Lawrence Taylor.  All these guys made an impact in the NFL.  Hakeem Nicks is just starting to.

There is no way in Hades Skip Holtz would make a lateral move or a step down to Carolina.  Skip is smarter than that.  He's going to look at moving up not moving sideways and coach a football team that is going to be on probation for a couple of years.  Oh he might of thought about it, but hey, so did I!  Even if this came at the end of the season last year, Skip would have said no to an interview.  No coach in their right mind that has a program free of scandal is going to consider going there.  Mediocre league, mediocre football team.  Carolina is basketball.  Always has been, always will be.  It will always play number two!

I'm thinking Skip Holtz tenure at USF will be short lived as he is interested in this job.

The timing of it all may be the only thing that keeps him away.

Hate to say it ...They finally got it right- Butchie shoulda been gone sometime ago. Its not the mission of a University to be a farm league for the NFL.  It s about the academics - yes the academics! It was starting to look as though they were going to sell their soul for the sake of keeping Butchie around!  Hopefully it was the new BOG that set Thorpe and Baddour straight on this one. Perhaps they're not done....
And to say Butchie had nothing to do with - be ignorant or complicit as a head coach doesn't relieve you from responsibility - period.
As an actual alum and not a wal-mart fan..... they got it right!

Okay - I GET why he was fired - I still don't understand the timing.  Last time I checked you fired and hired coaches during the off-season, not within 2-3 weeks of opening your fall camp.  Who the heck is going to run this team?  If NC was bad last year, they are going to be even worse by changing their coach before the beginning of the season.  What a crazy-ass decision - again I don't question the decision because it was inevitable but I really question the timing

i agree timing was terrible were near the end of july and you wanna fire your coach?? it wasnt like these violatons were new everybody knew about this around spring ball so cutting ties then would have made more sense than doing right before fall camp. at least osu interm coach has had some time to build a plan for the up coming season who is the interm coach at unc will have so scramble to make one quick...

bad timing unc football season is basically done
