The firing of Butch Davis is not the only leadership change that will occur in the North Carolina athletic department in the coming months. When Chancellor Holden Thorp and athletic director Dick Baddour addressed the media to explain the dismissal of Davis, Baddour also announced that he plans to step aside as AD.

Baddour's contract is set to run through June 2012, and he informed the media that he has told Thorp to begin the search for his replacement "as soon as possible." Thorp elaborated that Baddour would join the school in representing the program in Indianapolis before the NCAA Committee on Infractions. Once the school selects a replacement, Baddour will step aside from day-to-day duties but he will remain under contract until it expires in June.

Baddour, who has served as North Carolina's athletic director for 14 years, was visibly shaken as he announced the conclusion of his tenure to the gathered media in Chapel Hill. Thorp took multiple questions on the timing of the dismissal, and thanked the current playes in his opening statement "for putting on a North Carolina uniform."

Thorp also announced that he would be interviewing the interim candidates Thursday afternoon, and all of the interim candidates are current coaches on the North Carolina staff. The announcement of the interim coach is expected in the next few days.

Dick Baddour stepping down as UNC AD

Look, we're done and we are going to be bad for quite awhile now. Butch had to go. The minute he hired John Blake, trouble was coming right along with him. Someone (ANYONE) above Butch should have said "no way in hell is John Blake setting foot on this campus".  I always will be a proud grad (96), but we deserve whatever comes our way.

jgc1958 - Heck not sure we'll even be able to pull a coach from the "B" list - remember Torbush and Bunting...?  Never liked the idea of selling our academic soul for the sake of football and a 8-5 season at best.
The taste of of Butchie is going to linger for awhile.

This is a complete mess.  First of all, Baddour should have been axed long ago after the Matt Dougherty fiasco and the first attempt at Roy Williams.

The real farce is Holden Thorp discussing the integrity of the school as a reason for his actions.  The timing of this whole ordeal stinks.  UNC football fans were led to believe by Mr. Thorp that Butch Davis had his full support moving forward, and only after all the season tix for the Blue Zone were sold/committed, does this announcement come out.  Real integrity would have been upfront to the alumni and fan base about your intentions, not misleading to maximize on ticket sales and only making the move after the "cash is in hand".

The timing moving forward is awful too.  Who of high quality is UNC going to get to replace Baddour at this time?  Who are they going to get to become the football coach and walk into that hornet's nest?  In both examples, UNC will need to settle for their "B" list..................starting to sound like NC State Basketball.

I would take your lumps and move on and hope this wreckless management of the AD doesn't bleed over to the UNC-CHeat basketball team.

Just a guess on my part. Baddour didn't agree with the Davis firing. If so, I appreciate Baddour, Butch got a raw deal until it is proven otehrwise...and say what you must but it has not been proven that Davis was the problem here.

So when is Holden Thorpe stepping down too?? Since we cleaning house he might as well go too!! So Baddour still gets paid until June 2012 for doing nothing! This is crazy! Well back to the drawing board for Tarheel football! Its gonna be hard to draw in a decent coach with sanctions pending.

This had to happen.  The A.D's always like to play dumb.  Garrett did it at USC.  Smith is doing it at Ohio State.  At least Baddour is taking himself out of the picture early, and without a lot of debate as to whether he should, or should not leave.  He is doing what is beat for UNC.  Smith at Ohio State can learn a lesson from Baddour.  Step aside and start anew.  That is the best way to go.
