Pittsburgh quarterback Anthony Gonzalez will be suspended for the first two games of the season for a violation of team rules, head coach Todd Graham announced on Thursday.

The suspension stems from an arrest earlier this year in Gonzalez's hometown of Bethlehem, Pa. where the redshirt freshman was charged with marijuana possession, fake identification, and underage drinking. The citation was issued May 20, and Graham put Gonzalez on indefinite suspension until making the announcement on Thursday.

"A championship program has to be built on accountability and discipline, on and off the field," Graham said. "We know Anthony will learn from this experience and be better for it moving forward."

Gonzalez redshirted the 2010 season, and impressed coaches with his work during spring drills. The 6-foot-3 dual-threat quarterback was a recipient of the Ed Conway Award, the "most improved" award for Panthers' spring practice. Incumbent starter Tino Sunseri is expected to continue his role with the first string, but Gonzalez's improvement could make him a weapon for Todd Graham in the future.

Barring an injury to Sunseri, Gonzalez will likely only miss some clean-up opportunities as the Panthers face Buffalo and Maine at home for the first two games of the season.

Burgh boy....Didn't you have a single post on page 24 of the Bama/PSU game thread making fun of Penn State for kicking a FG down 24-0?  Stones and glass houses.  Get ready for the annual beating you guys take from us in a few years.  What will you do when you can't say "Well, we did beat you last..."?  I can't wait to hear what you will say when you lose both games.  Congrats on being better that us in the 20's.

BigDaddy, that's not exactly the way it works. And you know it. You make up your own suspension rules just so Pitt has better chance of losing. When we all know whenever a player gets in trouble, he's suspended the games right after that trouble. No team waits for the BIG games on the schedule to suspend players. Unless they happen to be in line with the trouble. So why is the new coach going to wait to suspend him when he should be suspended now. So quit acting like an A-whole jst because you don't want to see Pitt win! What a freakin post! One of the dumbest ones I've ever come across!!!!!Wink

How typical is this?  First year HC Todd Graham is going to show how much of a disciplinarian he is by suspending this kid for the first two games.  He is going to make a statement.  All of that sounds great, except for two small details.  First, the kid was not a starter.  Second, he is being suspended from home games against Buffalo and Maine, two teams that would struggle on the road against Juco teams.  If you are going to attempt to make a statement, suspend people for games that count, like at Iowa and Notre Dame, which happen to be games 3 and 4 in Pitt's schedule.
