Oklahoma tops preseason Coaches Poll

Just as predicted by numbers guru Phil Steele back in February, Oklahoma will begin the 2011 season ranked No. 1 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Sooners grabbed 42 of a possible 59 first-place votes in the coaches' preseason ballot, released Thursday morning, but still hold just a 40-point lead over second-place Alabama. The Tide took 13 first-place votes, with the remaining four split evenly between No. 3 Oregon and No. 4 LSU (who just so happen to be playing in Dallas on the season's opening Saturday). Florida State rounds out the top five, further cementing Jimbo Fisher's program as the new ACC favorites. (Virginia Tech is the next-highest ACC team at No. 13.)

Conference-by-conference, the poll features eight teams from the SEC, five from the Big Ten, five from the Big 12, two each from the Pac-12, ACC and Mountain West, and one independent in Notre Dame. The Big East went unrepresented in the top 25, with West Virginia finishing "No. 27" as part of the "Also Receiving Votes" category.

Some immediate reaction:
  • When it comes to getting the benefit of the doubt, it still pays to be the biggest-name program possible. Georgia, Florida, Texas and Penn State combined for a whopping 25 losses last year, but all four still find their way into the preseason ballot as teams Nos. 21-25.
  • Despite the SEC's lofty reputation, it's the Big 12 with the top billing in the top 10. In addition to Oklahoma edging the Tide for top spot, both Oklahoma State and Texas A&M squeeze into the top 10 while only LSU joins Alabama from the SEC. The Cowboys and Aggies will have a lot to prove, as recent Big 12 dark horses like Nebraska last season and the '09 Cowboys have failed to live up to their preseason ranking.
  • Ohio State's off-season turmoil has left Wisconsin and those same Cornhuskers as the only Big Ten teams in the top 15 of the poll. Given the league's apparent parity -- the Huskers were recently named the league favorite despite coaching turnover and major losses on defense -- even that may be generous.
  • The top two teams in the final poll of 2010 slid a combined 31 spots, with national champion Auburn coming in No. 19 and No. 2 TCU checking in at No. 15. Auburn may be ranked entirely too low if you subscribe to the "champions until they lose" doctrine, and entirely too high if you believe the combination of a brutal schedule and extremely young roster will result in a struggle to even make the top 25. Which means they're probably ranked about right for a poll like this.
  • With USC ineligible and Arizona State and Utah each finishing in the "Also Receiving Votes" category, no team from the new Pac-12 South was included. Guess the "Sun Devils = divisional favorite" offseason chatter didn't mean a whole lot to the voters, just as West Virginia's status as the presumptive Big East favorite didn't. But should it really have meant less than Penn State's expected running-in-place season after a 7-6 season a year ago?
  • For that reason, this blogger will go with the Nittany Lions as the poll's most overrated team, and a tie between Nos. 13 and 14 -- Virginia Tech and loaded Arkansas -- as the poll's most underrated.

Oklahoma tops preseason Coaches Poll

The winner of the LSU/Oregon game chould clearly be the number 1 team in the country.  If the game were between two SEC teams, you would easily agree with me.  But this game is between the team favored to win the SEC and the team favored to win the Pac-12, which also was in the BCS Championship game last year.  By the way, 8 teams in the top 25 is ridiculous.    This is the scam the SEC runs to game the BCS rankings......If the SEC is THAT GOOD, they should destroy every non-conference opponent they place.  Once again, if the SEC deserves 8 teams in the top 25, they should destroy all nonconference opponents.  If not, the entire conference should be dropped in rankings.  LSU should be favored to destroy Oregon....or else go down in rankings.

Huh?  What a convaluted mess.  So the team that should be favored shouldn't be the team that is rtanked higher, but rather the team whose conference has more teams in the top 25?  When a team wins or losses from a conference ALL other teams in that conference should go up or down also?  Do we simply ignore the games played by other members of that conference that week?

What on earth are you babbling about?

Obviously, who ever wins the Oregon vs. LSU game should immedietly become number.  Oklahoma has the largest negative differential from AP pre-season rank to end of season rank, so it isn;t a shocker to see them, yet again, over-rated.  It happens perpetually.

if you wanna break it down and make it about the 2 schools themselves and be the ignorant OU then lets do it like this... try 50 total national championships for the real OSU and only about 26 for Owho...the sooners football team was 10-2 last year. then they had 2 post season wins you jagoff. oh and i believe one of them was against an 8-4 UCON team...way to go get big headed beating those guys! but leave it up to a fan whose team is named after cheaters to have a dumb ignorant look on life....most sooner fans dont even know where their team got their name from. i can only imagine that neither do you so here you....a sooner was someone who left in the middle of the night, the night before the land rush legally began just so they coulod get "better" land. so see, even the very first sooners, litterally the very first ones, were cheatin a$$ ignorant unfair people. i hope you were able to read all of the words in this comment. i know theres not a whole lot of smart sooner fans, if any.

Cman, You disproved absolutely nothing.  Although I will have to revise one point.  While I merely called you racist, that was an understatement.  As you like to lump people together based on Race, Religion, Education level, Geographic proximity, Etc. I guess I should have called you a full on BIGOT.  So, one more time:

Pt #1
Bigot:
: a person who is or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial, religious, or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

(Judging by what you've written, this aptly describes you)

Pt #2
Hypocrite:
(1) A person who engages in the same behaviors he condemns others for.

(2) A person who professes certain ideals, but fails to live up to them.

(3) A person who holds other people to higher standards than he holds himself.

(HMMMMM, Belittle a group of poeple you've never met by calling them stupid and then openly display your own stupidity for all to see....I'd say numbers 1 and 3 fit.......YUP, sounds like a hypocrite to me.)

Pt. #3
A$$H0LE:
I won't bother with a definition, we all know some of these.  When you see one, you know it.

(At least you owned up to this one, that's almost respectable.)

CMax...Alabama-the-Lessers time has past. PREPARE for pain...SEC pain and more importantly...NCAA pain. AU is not picked FIFTH in the SEC West for no reason. As far as Patrick Peterson, there was some questions about if he was bought and paid for, but just QUESTIONS. We all KNOW Scam was bought and paid for, just like the crystal ball Auburnt will be stripped of soon enough.

Here's a question. which will survive the longest, Toomers' Oaks or The Tiger-the Lesser's BCS Championship....my money is on the oaks.

AND, by all means, October 22...cannot wait. I am sure Gene Cheats-it can't either.

exactly toad

never said I could spell, but before going off the deep end lets figure out how stupid you are. 1. I'm white = your dumb 2. its a fact most people in utah are white nerds. 3. never said i was good at english. 4. you just proved all my points by using curse words and calling me names for having a opinion. 5. only a white moron nerd could excell in 6th grade english cause most people that live in the real world are too busy trying to support our families. 6. furthermore, as far as racist you are the jacka$$ that called me a black person when you hadn't had a clue what color i really am. 7. the only thing you got right is the fact that i am an a$$hole sometimes. 8. i still said you have a solid football team but i don't like the way people from up north bash the SEC. so i wrote to bash back and what happened you jumped all over it like you would as if was a 11 year old girl with 6 sisters you could brainwash. i really dont have time for this so lets agree that utah, boise st, and all the other morons in the world should give credit and support solid football programs and show good sportsmanship. i pulled for the utes when they beat ALA in the sugar bowl. as far as being racist i just hate religous nerds. oh if you hadn't noticed 95% of utah is white. you probably never seen a black person in your city. so dont get so mad. i can have an opinion. one more thing ni##a please.

I find it somewhat hilarious how angry people get over these things.
