Oklahoma tops preseason Coaches Poll

Just as predicted by numbers guru Phil Steele back in February, Oklahoma will begin the 2011 season ranked No. 1 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Sooners grabbed 42 of a possible 59 first-place votes in the coaches' preseason ballot, released Thursday morning, but still hold just a 40-point lead over second-place Alabama. The Tide took 13 first-place votes, with the remaining four split evenly between No. 3 Oregon and No. 4 LSU (who just so happen to be playing in Dallas on the season's opening Saturday). Florida State rounds out the top five, further cementing Jimbo Fisher's program as the new ACC favorites. (Virginia Tech is the next-highest ACC team at No. 13.)

Conference-by-conference, the poll features eight teams from the SEC, five from the Big Ten, five from the Big 12, two each from the Pac-12, ACC and Mountain West, and one independent in Notre Dame. The Big East went unrepresented in the top 25, with West Virginia finishing "No. 27" as part of the "Also Receiving Votes" category.

Some immediate reaction:
  • When it comes to getting the benefit of the doubt, it still pays to be the biggest-name program possible. Georgia, Florida, Texas and Penn State combined for a whopping 25 losses last year, but all four still find their way into the preseason ballot as teams Nos. 21-25.
  • Despite the SEC's lofty reputation, it's the Big 12 with the top billing in the top 10. In addition to Oklahoma edging the Tide for top spot, both Oklahoma State and Texas A&M squeeze into the top 10 while only LSU joins Alabama from the SEC. The Cowboys and Aggies will have a lot to prove, as recent Big 12 dark horses like Nebraska last season and the '09 Cowboys have failed to live up to their preseason ranking.
  • Ohio State's off-season turmoil has left Wisconsin and those same Cornhuskers as the only Big Ten teams in the top 15 of the poll. Given the league's apparent parity -- the Huskers were recently named the league favorite despite coaching turnover and major losses on defense -- even that may be generous.
  • The top two teams in the final poll of 2010 slid a combined 31 spots, with national champion Auburn coming in No. 19 and No. 2 TCU checking in at No. 15. Auburn may be ranked entirely too low if you subscribe to the "champions until they lose" doctrine, and entirely too high if you believe the combination of a brutal schedule and extremely young roster will result in a struggle to even make the top 25. Which means they're probably ranked about right for a poll like this.
  • With USC ineligible and Arizona State and Utah each finishing in the "Also Receiving Votes" category, no team from the new Pac-12 South was included. Guess the "Sun Devils = divisional favorite" offseason chatter didn't mean a whole lot to the voters, just as West Virginia's status as the presumptive Big East favorite didn't. But should it really have meant less than Penn State's expected running-in-place season after a 7-6 season a year ago?
  • For that reason, this blogger will go with the Nittany Lions as the poll's most overrated team, and a tie between Nos. 13 and 14 -- Virginia Tech and loaded Arkansas -- as the poll's most underrated.

LSUdabest1, I saw some smoke and some fire last year.  It was coming from Newton's feet as he trucked Patrick Peterson (talk about questionable eligibility) like a gimp in the end zone.  24-17, Boss...see ya October 22nd.

all the stupid white nerds in Idaho couldn't be more happy with themselves while they bash the SEC, BIG TEN, and any other AQ conference. DONT BLAME OTHER PROGRAMS FOR YOUR SHORT COMINGS. PEOPLE SHOULDN'T CAST STONES IN GLASS HOUSES. so congradulate the

true champions
Cmanhefresh, all you really this clueless.  I can describe you in three words, " Racist Hypocritical A$$H0LE".  Since I'm sure you can't fathom where I ascertain this opinion from, allow me to enlighten you.

Point #1
Racist - from you post: "all the stupid white nerds in Idaho".  How pissed would you be if someone said all the ignorant black (fill in the blank) in Louisiana.  NUFF SAID!!

Point #2
Hypocritical - You make reference to "stupid white nerds" and then struggle with a sixth grade spelling word, "congradulate",  HUH??????  I might let you get away with the excuse of poor typing skills if you hadn't misspelled it twice.

Point #3
A$$H0LE - Look in the mirror

I agree that a Louisiana directional school and the Citadel (Rutgers backed out in July of '04 and were replaced with the Citadel) were weaker opponents than Bowling Green and Houston in '04, but Auburn also does not get bombed by 36 in the title game by USC.

My apologies Raider for Life...I assumed you were Oakland/LA fan.

You do make many valid points.

I did not consider Scam Newtons eligibility, which the NCAA should have. tOSU's fab five should have also been declared ineligible and now Arkansas fans are left with a meaningless bowl to remember.

I am pretty sure Auburns victory over Orgeon will also be vacated.  There is more than enough smoke in Auburn to declare the program on fire.

sick of crying morm@ns. I mean bitchy morons.

i am so tired of morons trash talking quality football conferences. the worst of all is these idiotic boise st fans who couldn't beat a solid top ten team if they got spotted a 14 point lead. go play a real team you losers. when you finish play another 9 - 10 win team and then shut the hell up. until you play someone dont hate. all the stupid white nerds in Idaho couldn't be more happy with themselves while they bash the SEC, BIG TEN, and any other AQ conference. DONT BLAME OTHER PROGRAMS FOR YOUR SHORT COMINGS. PEOPLE SHOULDN'T CAST STONES IN GLASS HOUSES. so congradulate the
true champions for there quality of football and be a good sport and maybe people would congradulate your solid football team too.

Talk about overrated. Sooners haven't won a BCS bowl against anyone good for 10 years. Big 12 overrated as usual. Ucon last year if not for big east auto bid would have been is a low end bowl. The big east hasn't been good in football for a long time. I hate Sec buit still they are the best conf. If Standford and oregon are anywere near as good as last year they are only teams to challenge Sec. Sooners won't. Not after how they have played for 10 years vs best of Sec, Pac 10 or in any BCS bowl game.

This is too easy. I am too stupid...think again...sixer...oh that is right you are a Gaytor...thinking is quite difficult. As far as history yes they had too much talent to have that record. Also, nimrod, they had soooo much talent in the 90's they should have won at least two, if not three, national champiosnhips...coaching matters. You are the one "living" in history...I merely look to it. Your beloved Gaytors will not see another champiosnhip game for at least two with it. Meyer left because he knew what he was leaving...a sub par team that is now beatable by Kentucky! To bring Peyton Manning into a discussion about a crappy UF team is not worthy of wouldn't be able to process my words. And Be Weary...please it was Fred Weary and he is long in the past again. Remember look to the future it is is painted Garnet & Gold...come to the light

Such a beutiful post I just felt like a reprint

2004 - Auburn had just as legit a claim as either USC or Oklahoma.  However, I agree, my RED Raiders did not beat Oklahoma that year, so I'm not suggesting they would have belonged

Not to mention the fact that USC and OU were wire to wire #1 & 2 from start to finish and never waivered enough to give room for an argument to allow another team to jump them, then adding( as you mentioned)Auburns SOS in OOC play-Louisiana Monroe, the Citadel, and Louisiana Tech(Very weak), just didn't have the strength to push past either of the other two top ranked teams.
