Oklahoma tops preseason Coaches Poll

Just as predicted by numbers guru Phil Steele back in February, Oklahoma will begin the 2011 season ranked No. 1 in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Sooners grabbed 42 of a possible 59 first-place votes in the coaches' preseason ballot, released Thursday morning, but still hold just a 40-point lead over second-place Alabama. The Tide took 13 first-place votes, with the remaining four split evenly between No. 3 Oregon and No. 4 LSU (who just so happen to be playing in Dallas on the season's opening Saturday). Florida State rounds out the top five, further cementing Jimbo Fisher's program as the new ACC favorites. (Virginia Tech is the next-highest ACC team at No. 13.)

Conference-by-conference, the poll features eight teams from the SEC, five from the Big Ten, five from the Big 12, two each from the Pac-12, ACC and Mountain West, and one independent in Notre Dame. The Big East went unrepresented in the top 25, with West Virginia finishing "No. 27" as part of the "Also Receiving Votes" category.

Some immediate reaction:
  • When it comes to getting the benefit of the doubt, it still pays to be the biggest-name program possible. Georgia, Florida, Texas and Penn State combined for a whopping 25 losses last year, but all four still find their way into the preseason ballot as teams Nos. 21-25.
  • Despite the SEC's lofty reputation, it's the Big 12 with the top billing in the top 10. In addition to Oklahoma edging the Tide for top spot, both Oklahoma State and Texas A&M squeeze into the top 10 while only LSU joins Alabama from the SEC. The Cowboys and Aggies will have a lot to prove, as recent Big 12 dark horses like Nebraska last season and the '09 Cowboys have failed to live up to their preseason ranking.
  • Ohio State's off-season turmoil has left Wisconsin and those same Cornhuskers as the only Big Ten teams in the top 15 of the poll. Given the league's apparent parity -- the Huskers were recently named the league favorite despite coaching turnover and major losses on defense -- even that may be generous.
  • The top two teams in the final poll of 2010 slid a combined 31 spots, with national champion Auburn coming in No. 19 and No. 2 TCU checking in at No. 15. Auburn may be ranked entirely too low if you subscribe to the "champions until they lose" doctrine, and entirely too high if you believe the combination of a brutal schedule and extremely young roster will result in a struggle to even make the top 25. Which means they're probably ranked about right for a poll like this.
  • With USC ineligible and Arizona State and Utah each finishing in the "Also Receiving Votes" category, no team from the new Pac-12 South was included. Guess the "Sun Devils = divisional favorite" offseason chatter didn't mean a whole lot to the voters, just as West Virginia's status as the presumptive Big East favorite didn't. But should it really have meant less than Penn State's expected running-in-place season after a 7-6 season a year ago?
  • For that reason, this blogger will go with the Nittany Lions as the poll's most overrated team, and a tie between Nos. 13 and 14 -- Virginia Tech and loaded Arkansas -- as the poll's most underrated.

When does school start?  Getting kinda tired of all the high-schoolers taking over the comment boards.

Seriously.....this section is for COMMENTS.  Not back-and-forth short stories between apparently unemployed lazy guys with nothing better to do than pick arguments with random strangers.  If you must say something, try to keep it to a couple sentences, okay?

I see you didn't take my advice about spell/grammar check in posts where you repeatedly call someone dumb.

See, it's easy for simple minded, insecure people to dog on someone and call them a loser for making that type of decision, and you fit the profile, so go ahead.

And I find this quite funny.  You're calling someone insecure all the while writing books on a message board in defense of your school.

I think you're projecting.

Who cares about spell and grammar check dude, it's a friggin message board.  The dumb part comes from point of views and improper facts about a subject, not grammar and spelling.  Also, I know you might be used to one page books since that's probably all your mind can handle, but typing a couple paragrahs does not constitute a book.

@ Sixer. I am so tired of your drivel as I am sure everyone else on this thread is. You only see the worl through the eyes of your program and it is sad. TO question whether I have played the game is hilarious. It is always those who have never accomplished anything that question others. I am 43 but bet I could still out run, out catch, out tackle and out throw you. Me insecure...you are the one who is getting defensive and aggressive in his replies not I, nor NoleCav, nor any other respondent. Even the Oklahoma fans laughed at you when you credited Weiss with taking KC to the plyoffs, Even UofF has backed off becuase of your twaddle. You are the one using foul language on a site where youngsters are present. Typical Gator...gets riled up because he is wrong and responds with curesing. Ha Ha Ha.

As for the rest I leave it alone...you are no longer worth my time so enjoy your life in Pensacola, kick back with a rum runne on Perdido Key and chill out...Don't forget to shut your profile off on 11/26 after the Gators lose.

Thanks and be safe!

Thank you for proving every point I've made with this garbage.  BTW, the Sooner fan was making fun of you, not me.

Dear God sixer give it up. You Gators have had some of the best recruiting classes in recent years and your defensive depth was supposed to be second to none. Let's not get into who knows what about football because I will school you rube. Don't hand me this we get deflated garbage because if you play to win you play to win. So the UF defense is a bunch of pansy quitters because the OC called horrible plays (execeuted by overrated players) and their backs were against the wall. Take a stand and make them kick...I may chat like an 8 year old but I will try to go to your KG mindset - 3 points is less than 7 points...Get it....Now here's your pacifier and a blanket and go take a nap.

You've just given us all proof that you've 1) never played the game, and 2) DEFINITELY lack any perspective on the big picture.  By you stating the defense is a bunch of "pansy quitters" is a prime example.  I'll even give you an example, one which you can probably relate to.  Remember Jeff Bowden?  Yea he was right down there at the level of Addazio. You guys were loaded with offensive talent, but nobody knew it except your own fans...and a few reasonable college football fans outside your fanbase. People outside your fanbase called those players "overrated," but anyone with football knowledge knew that team had talent, but it just wasnt being utilized properly.  Bowden had your defenses exhausted in games.  I think there is a difference between being a "pansy quitter" and being flat out exhausted. It's just like the Gators last year.  Instead of utilizing talent properly, the Gators were a mess and couldn't move the ball.  You say "take a stand and make them kick," while that's true, there's also a line that says the offense needs to do their job too.

As for KC...please. You are exhibiting to everybody why you need to shut your profile down. Weiss did not lead KC to the playoffs and do not hand me this bs about his offense and his calls. Cassell came into his own and Charles had a great thrid year..was inevitable. They will both do the same and KC will be good agian without Weiss...just like NE was. Weiss didn't develop anything except a charge account at Big and Tall! If he is so good we will see with the Gators this year...don't hand me give hime time because he did it in one year at KC..right. Your words correlated to college football...and do not hand me semantics of "I did not say that". You did ignoramus I am just smart enough to read between the lines.  And you hand me Super Bowl Rings...yes the NFL and Super Bowl is the HIGHEST LEVEl...but when you are a failure you go become an OC somehwere at a lower level. Who takes 3 steps back in a career path. A FAILURE! And I don't know football. Take your head out of the sand and the blinders off the Gator colored glasses and join the adults.

Well, that's your opinion about KC...although I find it interesting that you and just about every other nole fan are the only people that feel this way about Weiss...and it just so happens he is he new Gator OC, wow what a coinsidence!  And then you say "if he is so good we'll see with the Gators this year," well, that's not going to matter because if he is successful, you and your nole fan base will find an excuse somewhere to say that it wasn't Weiss.  Then you have: "...but when you are a failure you go become an OC somehwere at a lower level. Who takes 3 steps back in a career path."  If you would've listened to his press conferences, it was family.  Now I know you and every other nole fan are gonna somehow relate it back to Urban about the whole "family" thing.  He wanted to be around his son, who is beginning his coaching career as a grad assistant.  He was set up to be at Texas, but followed Muschamp.  Weiss said he has made his money, he's won 4 Super Bowl rings....4 Super Bowl rings and he's a failure? You're an idiot, and no, you know nothing about football.   I guess to arrogant pricks like you he's got to do so much more than 4 Super Bowl rings in his career.  See, it's easy for simple minded, insecure people to dog on someone and call them a loser for making that type of decision, and you fit the profile, so go ahead.

but then they got into major college football in 1958
My mistake, it was 1955...the rivalry started in 1958.

It's a "cop-out", is it? UF actually had a "coaching staff" before FSU had a field. So by comparison, you moron, yes they several orders of magnitude more serious than FSU, who was barely a college at the time. Learn context or shut up.
Really moron? Um, I believe FSU became the first college in the state of Florida in to go undefeated, and they did that in 1950; granted they were at like a D-II status, but then they got into major college football in 1958.  Before you make stuff up, you might want to do a little research.

As evidenced by what, exactly? Again, you don't get to define the parameters based on whatever makes you look good. And that makes the next quote even more interesting.

Evidenced by what you write.  You show total lack of knowledge when it comes to college football, then to try to make your program look good, you feel the need to make things up.  (see above)

So says the master of edited timelines and hypocritical "cop-out" accusations (more on that to come). I never said anything of the sort, but as per usual the idiot UF meth-head will consistently say that because it was preordained in the delusional psyche of an idiot. Let me give you something you sorely lack. Perspective (and logic?). FSU owns the series against VT. However, (pay close attention, because this is where idiots get lost) it wasn't a rivalry until VT joined the ACC. That's is when VT became more competitive. I do not credit FSU for wins against VT in the 1980's. It wasn't a rivalry then. Neither was FSU and UF before the acronym 'FSU' was even used. A rivalry starts when the meetings actually become competitive. That is why it is called a rivalry in the first place. It's is sort of the defining characteristic. Or did you not understand that? If FSU suddenly starts losing to VT every year, it will cease to be a rivalry.

Right, so me saying you should start the rivalry when it actually started INSTEAD of choosing when to start it, makes me the "master of edited timelines?" And I'm the "meth-head?" I used the example of UGA-UF, and then you go and compare Virginia Tech-FSU?  "preordained in the delusional psyche of an idiot"  well...I think you just gave us all a nice example.  Spare me on "duurrr I was using VT-FSU to try and show you that you shouldnt count wins if the school isn't serious about football."  I give you UGA-UF as an example of a rivalry, and you give me Virginia friggin Tech? And I lack perspective?  Get real moron, just please stop talking....you've gone to an extreme level of stupidity that's almost worthy of frustration.

That's not blaming Meyer for the losses, that is still blaming Addazio. And there is your "cop-out." Admonishing Meyer for not firing Addazio does not place the blame of losses on Meyer. It is not giving credit to Addazio for UF's earlier successes either. So how about you actually have a point before demanding someone bear YOUR burden of proof?

I think your comprehension level is just way to low.  Anyone can see that Meyer not firing Addazio DOES, in fact, put some of the blame on Meyer for losses.  So there is your point numb nuts.  And I'll give credit for Addazio's earlier successes....but when you promote someone to a higher level position and they are the worst in college football, something needs to be done.  And I don't care what you say, Meyer not acting in that situation puts blame on him for a subpar season.
