Helpful advice for any deadbeat parents out there. If you happen to get a letter in the mail saying you've won tickets to the Iron Bowl to see Alabama play Auburn this year, don't go pick them up. You're likely being set up to be arrested. My other advice would be to pay your child support.

Last Friday in Opelika, Alabama, local police set up such a sting in which they sent letters to parents who owed child support telling them to show up and claim the Iron Bowl tickets they just won. The police then put on a big show for each of the parents before getting them in a room and informing them they were being arrested for not paying child support. All while news cameras caught the entire thing.

Now, while I don't exactly have a problem with these people being arrested, I do have quite a few problems with the way the police went about all of this. If you have the ability to set up this entire thing, why not just arrest the people? Why go through all the trouble of setting up a ploy like this, then having the news cameras come in and shoot the entire thing. How much time and money was wasted to make sure this happened?

Then there's the fact that they're making these people into sympathetic figures. Yes, they deserve what they're getting, but it just feels wrong. If you want to do a news story on it, then call the local news and do the interviews with them after you've arrested everybody. There's no need to have the cameras in the room with you as you're doing it.

Iron Bowl helps catch deadbeat parents

Seriously, Fornelli? You feel bad for them because someone told them they were going to get free Iron Bowl tickets and then they got arrested for not paying child support?  Do you also feel bad for people who go to a website and the banner ad flashes "You just won a free iPad2 Click here!!!"? These guys are deadbeats... they didn't pay child support and I guarantee at least 95% of them wouldn't walk into the police station and turn themselves in if a letter was sent saying there was a warrant for the arrest.  Not only does it get the deadbeats off of the street, but clearly, it works most on the deadbeats with the lowest IQs.  Who falls for that crap???

Fornelli, You liberal a** piece of garbage! How dare you write "It just feels wrong". How would it "feel" if you were struggling to make ends meet taking care of your children on pennies and your former spouse/lover/whatever won't send you a dime to help out their own kids? I guess that "feels" better to you for these babydaddies to just leave their "mark" and never accept any responsibility for their offspring. Better for working white America to pay to feed and clothe them. "Why not just arrest the people" you ask??? Step off into the real Black Chicago one day Tom or into White Trash Chicago and try to find 1 or 2 random people on a list of names and 5 year old addresses. Then remember that the real "list" has hundreds of names that have warrants and you would see a glimpse into what the real members of the Law and Order community are trying to do every day. All for $15-$20 an hour. Oh yeah... they get shot at too. These trashy people weren't taking a day off from their jobs on Michigan Avenue. Stick to writing about sports and leave your lame ass liberal commentary to yourself. You disgust me. No one in this country wants anyone.... at any level to accept any responsibilty for anytime. And pay your child support or go buy something your kids really need.

Answers to your questions, Fornelli:  1) A sting like this is much more cost effective in terms of police man hours because you have the suspects come to the police instead of sending out officers all over Alabama trying to track down suspects who may or may not be at their address when officers get there.  2) Inviting news cameras in to film the bozos as they are arrested doesn't cost the tax payers a penny.  The police just call the news channels, tell them what's up, and the rest is taken care of by their camera crews.  3) The reasons why they film the arrests are many, but showing tax dollars at work arresting multiple suspects with very little effort is always a good PR move for a police department.  And I find it very difficult to belive that arresting these people in such a manner garners any sympathy for them at all.  They're dead beat parents, who cares how they got arrested?

I completely disagree with you, Tom. There are thousands of children who do not have proper financial support. Why? Because there are parents out there who willfully refuse to pay child support. Some of these deatbeat parents purposely disobey court orders and live a good life, while their children suffer from lack of essential necessities, such as clothes, food and shelter. Those parents who are simply unable to provide due to illness or disability are not the ones I am speaking of, though there should be a moral obligation to do what they can for their kids. If it takes making a public spectacle of these deadbeat parents, then so be it. There is nothing sympathetic about these lawbreakers who show their greed by trying to pick up Iron Bowl tickets while not doing right by their kids. What are they going to say? "I was going to get the tickets and sell them so that I could pay my child support." They got what they deserved. Maybe some of these deadbeats will rush to pay what they owe to their children as a result of this "ploy". I'm all for it.
