Georgia Tech's inexperienced offensive line took a hit on Wednesday when head coach Paul Johnson announced starting RT Phil Smith will miss the first two games of the season.'s Larry Harstein reports that Smith has been suspended for violation of a team rule, though Johnson did not divulge what the nature of the violation.

Smith started eight games in 2010 and was expected to be one of the leaders of the offensive line along with Preseason All-ACC guard Omoregie Uzzi. Thankfully for the Yellow Jackets, the first two opponents on the schedule are Western Carolina and Middle Tennessee State. Smith will be back in time for the Yellow Jackets to host Kansas on Sept. 17, looking to get revenge on last year's 28-25 loss in Lawrence.

Georgia Tech OL Phil Smith suspended 2 games

Suspending a starter on your offensive line when it's already depleted due to a large number of injuries and a loss of starters (read that experience players) from last season means Paul Johnson IS making a statement to his team from the get-go. This means that a true freshman will more than likely end up playing this season for GA Tech, which is something Coach Johnson specifically said he didn't want to do. The only positive I see coming out of this is that, perhaps, by the time the Yellow Jackets get to the meat of their schedule, they'll have a deeper, more experienced, offensive line to work with. Trial-by-fire is often times the best way to cut your teeth rather than practicing. GA Tech's young linemen will be forced to play games early this season with the first team offense. It may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Georgia Tech OL Phil Smith suspended 2 games

Wow, this is serious.  Suspended for Western Cartolina and Middle Tenn St.  This is a real hit to the OL at GA Tech.  I don't know if the Jackets can overcome such a serious suspension.  I wonder of Johnson consulted with Spurrier prior to announcing this penalty.  What a joke!
