UPDATE: The Sporting News is reporting that a "high-ranking SEC" source says the report of Texas A&M accepting an invitation to the SEC is "just not true." So there goes that. For now. Prepare yourselves for a new report on Friday saying that A&M is going to the SEC.

There has been a lot of talk about the possibility of Texas A&M leaving the Big 12 to join the SEC in recent days. However, that's all it has been: talk. Rumors spreading throughout the internet like wild fire with some saying that it's going to happen and other saying they believe Texas A&M is bluffing.

Well, now there's at least one site reporting that it's a done deal and Texas A&M will be leaving the Big 12 for what it sees as the greener pastures of the SEC.

According to -- a subscription site -- Texas A&M has already decided that it will join the SEC, but it can't officially announce the move until August 22nd. As you'd expect, this report has generated a lot of response online with some people buying it completely, and others expressing serious doubts.

Personally, I fall on the side of the line filled with doubt. As Aubrey Bloom of Gigem247 tweeted, this is the same website that reported A&M to the SEC was a done deal last year, and said as recently as a month ago that there was no chance that the Aggies would leave the Big 12. I'm also bothered by the fact that this story is behind a subscription wall and has only one source.

If you were that confident in the information, wouldn't you want to put the story somewhere the entire world could see it, and not just on a message board for subscribers?

Now this does not mean that I don't think Texas A&M is going to leave for the SEC at some point, nor does this mean I'm saying the report is false. All I'm saying is that I'd approach this story with caution. Until Texas A&M comes out and makes an official statement about its intentions, then everything else is just hearsay.

Report: Texas A&M to join the SEC - UPDATE

"where do you get your facts go poke yourself?? provide sources. I can't wait until September 24th when yall come to Kyle Field its gonna be great to get sweet revenge and ruin yalls title hopes and strengthen ours. Can't wait to beat yall...can't wait"

I get my facts from many sources but mostly just reading this website,, and Big 12 forums.  We'll show up to Kyle Field on the 24th and yes it wil lbe loud because it is Kyle Field but then we will unleash the nation's #2 overall offense and #1 scoring offense against your highly ranked defense.  By the end of the first quarter your defense will no longer be ranked as we rack up yard after yard and the #1 offensive line in the country pushes around your defensive linemen and linebackers like ragdolls.  When your offense finally takes the field after a sustained and systematic, 10 minute, 20 play 80 yard drive for a touchdown the #8 takeaway defense in the country will blitz your vastly over-rated QB and pick him off.  After less than 5 minutes in real-time of rest your winded defense is back on the field and quickly gives up a touchdown because they are exhausted.  The preceeding description of the events that will transpire in the first quarter will be repeated for the remainder of the game.  The final score, Oklahoma State 45 (W) TA&M 21 L).

Your team is over-rated and our team is superior to yours.  After UT raided Texas of it's first tier talent, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State beat TA&M for the second rate talent and some first rate talent that wss available because UT didn't have enough roster space to sign all of the players.

On the night of the game the most exciting thing Texas A&M will do is have their awesome band perform the halftime show.  I can't wait to watch the SEC watch the game and cry for agreeing to take TA&M into their conference.  I think the word "regret" will be used a lot.  TA&M will rregret leaving the Big 12.  The SEC will regret taking TA&M into the conference and Oklahoma State will regret not scoring more points against your over-rated team.

Report: Texas A&M to join the SEC - UPDATE

The MU Tigers become a true threat and contender in this conference and the teams that are threatened jump ship. Tigers luck, they should have switch conf. a couple years ago. Hope this doesn't hurt missouri recruiting.

Report: Texas A&M to join the SEC - UPDATE

If TX&M leaves the Big 12 it will be the biggest mistake that they ever made.  If TX&M thought it was to compete in the Big 12 before - try placing the 2nd best players in Texas up against the best players in LA, MI, AL, FL, GA, TN, SC, VA & AR.  Unless TX&M suddenly gets an influx of first-rate talent out of Texas then TX&M finish in the very bottom of the SEC when they were contenders (finally) in the race to the top of the Big 12.

I think that TX&M is just mad that they are not as big, strong, powerful, more popular & wealthy as Texas and will always be UT's adopted red-headed kid sister.  See, I think that TX&M suffers from an inferiority complex that none of the other member institutions in the Big 12 suffer from; they all know their place and they know that Texas is the most powerful institution in the Big 12 and UT decides what happens in the Big 12.

TX&M is mad because they want a say in the operations of the Big 12 but nobody will listen to them.  So, I say good riddence - I think that you're reaping the seeds sewn when you fired RC Slocum despite his continual success in his tenure - it has taken Sherman way longer than it should have to fix the mess that Franchione made of the roster and program.

Do not even mention finances - talk about biting the hand that feeds you.  I remember less than 5 years ago TX&M was $3 million dollars in the hole for fianancial losses involving the athletic programs and that the great money needed to financially save the athletic programs was brought in by 7 of the 12 members football teams in the conference who went to bowl games (2 went to BCS games, one to an upper tier bowl game and the rest went to lower tier bowl games).  Each of the member football teams in the conference that went to bowl games brought home a purse that was larger if they won the game than if they lost or just showed up.  The largest portion of the bowl money made by other programs in the Big 12 was made by an elite few but was shared collectively by the conference when they could do what TX&M could not do - they made money.  I hope the SEC knows the liability they are bringng on board when they add TX&M and TX&M raids the petty cash box of the conference.

So - go TX&M - get out - leave.  Nobody wants you here.  Go be just like Nebraska and leave because you couldn't dictate what happens within the conference.  Nebraska was just getting competitive again within the Big 12 when they bolted for the Big 10 - I think that Nebraska is in for a big slice of humble pie when they realize that they bit off more than they could chew against the Big 10 competition.  TX&M will very much regret moving to the SEC because a program that was just about to cross over the hump from medicore to good again with an opportunity to become elite again - now that is all ruined and it is going to take TX&M another 5 years to climb up to the SEC talent.  Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.  Adios!

Report: Texas A&M to join the SEC - UPDATE

@Topofstack, having 20/12 teams in the conference would be easier to administer than the 17/9 the Big East will have next year. You could have two 10 team divisions for basketball and two 6 team divisions for football. It also gives the Big East a conference championship football game. All of these 16 team conference are going to be a mess, but I don't think 20 teams will be much worse.

@Ohiotiger, I didn't mean to imply that Missouri would be following KU, but I could see why you would think that considering how you are always following us in basketball games. I was just saying that it would be best to go as a group to get the Big East to the 20/12 mark as I was talking about above. You guys were already rejected by the Big 10. I wouldn't sit around expecting to ride A&M's coat tails into the SEC, because it probably won't happen.

Having said all of that, I want KU to stay in the Big 12, but if it is going to die, KU needs to move so that we don't get left in the dust. The Big East is our best option, unless we somehow get a miracle invite from the Pac ??, Big 10 or ACC, which I don't see happening. Any other conference is not an option. KU would be better off going independent than putting its basketball program in C-USA or MWC.

If indeed this does come to pass look for the BE football playing members to break away and take 3 or possibly 4 leftovers. If they were to take 4 they would add Central Fla. to form a 14 team all sports conference. The basketball side would be as good as it is now and the football would be tolerable.

Report: Texas A&M to join the SEC - UPDATE

The SEC is interested in a recruiting inroad into Texas, one it has never had. If that means courting the likes of A&M, so be it. SEC doesn't want to deal with Texas' Longhorn network's complications for now, and realizes that getting OU probably means they have to take Oklahoma State - which they made clear they *didn't* want last year when the Pac 16 business went bust. That leaves A&M as a strategic, if not marquee, fit. If it gives them leverage to bring in Florida State, which I think has been a goal for some time, so much the better.

That said, if the SEC wanted FSU, and still needed two more teams, they might be pursuaded to accept Ok State if they got OU in the deal.

The combinations are tantalizing.

money talks

why doesn't the SEC get OU and Texas instead of a&m --- for a lot more money.  A&M will bring chump change to the SEC and each team will get a smaller  cut.
