For all the critics out there that enjoy claiming Boise State receives too much attention, a study of the last five years' worth of preseason AP polls has a little surprise in store.

According to Pollspeak.com and their review of the AP's initial ballots from 2006 through 2010, no team in the nation has been more underrated in the preseason than the Broncos, who have outperformed their initial ranking by a collective 38 spots in the final poll. 2010 aside (when BSU slipped six spots thanks to Kyle Brotzman's infamous shank job against Nevada), the Broncos haven't received enough preseason attention--particularly in 2006, when Boise entered the season unranked and finished it fifth after their legendary win over Oklahoma.*

If there's a common thread among the study's most underrated teams, it's that they come from outside the sport's traditional power programs. Cincinnati came in second behind the Broncos thanks to three straight years of Brian Kelly's overachieving, followed by TCU, Utah, Stanford and Oregon.

The most underrated team in the SEC? Alabama, despite last year's plunge from No. 1 to 10, thanks to massive underrating three of the four previous years.

On the flip side, the most overrated team also comes as something of a stunner: the Cal Golden Bears, who failed to outperform their preseason ranking all five years and finished well short of it three times. That's a lot of preseason mileage Jeff Tedford appears to have gotten out of those classic USC battles from the mid-Aughts, but it hasn't helped him much once the season starts.

Coming in behind the Bears on the overrated list? Texas, USC, Georgia, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Florida State. Of course, it's not really so much of a disgrace to appear in this space; when you're ranked as high as USC has been, for instance (6th, 1st, 3rd, and 4th in the first four years of the study) there's almost nowhere to go but down.

Still, it doesn't seem wise to bet on the Bears or Trojans (or top-ranked Sooners) to wind up maintaining their preseason expectation this year. And as for Boise? The preseason AP ballot isn't released until this Saturday, but if the media follows the coaches' lead in placing the Broncos seventh, one win over Georgia would have BSU well on its way to proving the pollsters wrong ... again.

Hmmmm. What could be wrong here? With ONE WIN over Georgia, Boise State might be on the way to exceeding expectations yet again. That, of course, is because they don't play anybody else of substance. Which leads me to observe that perhaps the Mustangs are headed for another OVERRATED finish.

Titanium by inferior teams, do you mean the same teams .... Boise St, Oregon, Penn St, Va Tech etc? I mean 1 of those teams is the same amount of useful teams Boise St puts on its WHOLE season schedule. Boise St, Utah, and TCU are all good teams, but it is an advantage to put yourself in an undefeated position by not playing but 2 tough games a season. And YES it is a great advantage to not have to gameplan and show all your cards through out the season until you do face a great team. It's quite obvious that those teams are good , but they are far from elite. Im not sipping the Boise St Kool aid cause they arent as great as the media is giving them the benefit of the doubt. ANd they are going to have to do more than skate by a team with trick plays or get referee help *cough couch, Va Tech game*. They are going to have to legitimately take a good team to the wood shed and whoop they're arse. I had just hoped they could have gotten into a major conference, although I thought the MWC might have been ok until all the good teams left.

Boise IS an underrated team (so is Utah and TCU), they are always overlooked. Sure, we defeated less fortunate institution, but what many people often forget is that Boise State isn't a rich institution itself. How is that relevant? Well, big institution attract players that are 4-stars and 5-stars prospect. Boise State will never recruit them, and this is what makes them underrated: using "inferior" (like what dumb fans of major school calls) players and get them to bring out their best. THAT IS WHY they are underrated.

And there are so many dumb reasons behind why teams like Boise State and TCU manage to defeat BCS team(s), the main one is "because it is easier to prepare if you just have only one tough team on your schedule". It is the other way around. After facing many tough team, you are well prepare to defeat an inferior team with ease. SEC teams schedule many "inferiors" teams from the Sunbelt, Mid-American, Conference USA, etc. and they blow them out by a 40+ margin of victory.

Oh and West Virginia fan, your team is useless, the Big East Commissioner knows it, that's why they invited TCU.

This is a "cutsie" & cuddly article Jerry.  Boise "Outperformed" their preseason rankings?  How exactly is it determined that Boise "PERFORMS", when they play schedules that rank from 90 to 118?

Stellar "performances" eh Jerry?  In fact, when it is time to "perform" since 2000, Boise is 8-9 vs. AQ opponents.

Keep trying to use the Boise angle to knock on the BCS, it's a tired arguement.

Unbeaten Boise lost to unproven Nevada last season.  Unbeaten Boise lost to twice beaten TCU three years ago. The same Boise team that you speak about beating OU, lost three game the following season, two of those three losses were to UNRANKED opponents.

Boise is the most OVERRATED football team each and every year.

Boise's overall record vs. AQ Opponents:

8-17.

Boise State has only been D1 for 15 or 16 seasons and to have come this far in so short a time is amazing.  Boise State doesn't have to apologize to anyone for anything.  The Broncos just show up, play ball and let everyone else do the yappin'.  If Central Florida can beat the Dawgs then I think Boise State can to.  We'll see you at the Georgia Dome and find out.

But here's how it is with an SEC fan. Say Boise is in the SEC and has 4 losses..... That is A Boise State team you would agrue all day long that they sould be in contention for a National Championship, even with 4 losses. Instead of ripping what this program has done year in and year out, be thankfull that they wont have toplay Boise State and see how it really is. Georgia my friends..... Is about to see whats up.... Up close and personal

Teresa is an idiot. Period. See, I can blurt  baseless, nonsensical crap that is irrelevant too. I've never met Teresa.

Now that I've pulled my tongue out of my cheek, I would like to say that this poll reminds of one of the statistics that is made up just to make a specific point. I think it's kinda silly.

Hey Teresa, why are you SEC guys so insecure and care so much about what everybody thinks about the Broncos? The SEC is the best conference is college football. Why is that not good enough?
