Russell Wilson's ascension to the top of Wisconsin's depth chart is officially complete. The senior quarterback, a ballyhooed transfer from North Carolina State, was officially named Wisconsin's starting quarterback in the depth chart sent out by the football program on Monday evening.

Wilson's designation comes a day after another commendation from the program, when Wilson was named one of four co-captains by his teammates. As noted by Wisconsin RapidReporter Tamira Madsen, the other co-captains are FS Aaron Henry, DL Patrick Butrym and Bradie Ewing. All four captains are seniors.

It's remarkable what a godsend Wilson has been for the program already. Wilson probably isn't going to approach his highest levels of production from his time at NC State -- the 379 straight pass attempts without an interception probably aren't going to happen again, nor is Wilson likely to throw for the 260 yards per game he averaged over the last two years for the Wolfpack. Wisconsin didn't need that heavy production from Scott Tolzein last season, and it probably won't ask the same of Wilson either -- especially since it's Wilson's first and only season with the program.

No, Wilson's real value for the Badgers comes from the simple fact that he's a healthy, experienced quarterback. Wisconsin's quarterback depth took a big hit this offseason when talented backup Curt Phillips suffered a setback in his ACL tear recovery; he's out for the second straight season. Jon Budmayr, who was projected to start before Wilson showed up and is currently second on Wisconsin's depth chart at QB, is experiencing such extensive nerve problems in his right arm that he's experiencing numbness and may require season-ending surgery. Past those two, Wisconsin has senior mop-up man Nate Tice (yes, son of Mike Tice) and a handful of freshmen. Without Wilson, the Badgers' quarterback situation would be in dire straits.

The news about the captaincy, then, is even better for the Badgers. It's one thing to depend on Wilson as a starting quarterback out of sheer necessity, as is pretty much the case for Wisconsin. It's another that Wilson has apparently taken to his role so well that his teammates have imbued him with leadership status. Sure, you want that from a starting senior quarterback, but you also want said senior quarterback to have spent years, not just months, developing relationships with his teammates, so for Wilson to be at this level already, either everything has to have gone well or the Badgers are insane and acting against their best interests. So it's probably much more the former and not the latter.

All of which is to say, the Russell Wilson Era has officially begun. It's only going to be a season long, but it's probably going to be one heck of a season.

You might want to check your facts...Wilson wasn't just going to miss spring ball at NC State this year, this would have been the third consecutive year. Remember before he played pro baseball, he played college baseball. And Tom O'Brien is anything but an idiot. The guy who replaces Wilson was the #4 pro style QB in the country coming out of high school and he's been riding the pine waiting for a turn. He's State's guy for the next two years and it was time to turn over the reins. O'Brien made the right, but tough, call. NC State fans loved Russell Wilson and so did/does Tom O'Brien has he's said repeatedly. So let's let the guys go play the game and we'll see what the records are at the end of the season, State's gonna do just fine without Wilson, just like we would have with him. Good luck Badgers, good luck Russell in the Big Ten, uh Eleven, no wait I think it's Twelve!

Smart move on both ends

Wilson has already figured out that baseball players who can't bat .300 in the minors are just "meat" to help bona fide future major leaguers develop.  So, Wilson gets grad classes and one more chance to impress NFL scouts, while Wiscy gets a one year rental.  Congrats to Wilson for being a student athlete who actually went to class.  Wherever he ends up, it won't be as "meat."
I think he will be a coach soon.

I disagree,  I think the players would elect him based on the fact that he will be the leader in the huddle and they hope he can take the reigns and run with it.  I think cam newton from auburn and Sam Keller at nebraska were both elected team captains their first year.

While it turned out good for Auburn, not so much for Nebraska.

This could very well be a tumultuous season for Wisconsin.

Hunker down Badger fans, that first big ten game with a new general on the field will make or break the chemistry of the team     &

Should be an exciting fall/winter in the state of Wisconsin.  The Brewers should make the playoffs, the Packers should compete for a SuperBowl repeat, the Badger football team has the nucleus of a championship team and the Badger basketball team has an All-Star in Jordan Taylor.  Make Wisconsin proud, Russell, and good luck this upcoming season!!!

Tom O'Brien is an idiot.  He was mediocre at BC and is mediocre at State.  All Wilson wanted was a chance to compete for the starting job not have it handed to him.  Not many guys are good enough athletes to be able to play college football and professional baseball and you only get that chance once in life.  Plus it's not like they were installing a new offense.  Wilson had played in that O for
3 years so I don't think missing spring practice would be much of a hindrance to him or the team.  I can't wait to hear the calls for his head after Wisconsin rolls to a great season and State limps to a .500 finish.

I'm really impress with Wilson, both on the field and off.  He will be successful in whatever he persues.  Hope he and the Badgers have a great season.
