Notre Dame fans have high expectations for the Irish heading into Brian Kelly's second year at the helm. They find themselves ranked in the top 20 of both major polls, with CBSSports.com's Brett McMurphy and others placing them in the top 10. Among all this hype, Kelly has kept the quarterback competition open between junior Dayne Crist and sophomore Tommy Rees.

On Tuesday Kelly ended the speculation naming Crist the starting quarterback for Notre Dame's season opener against South Florida on Sept. 3. The two quarterbacks had flip-flopped reps with the first-team, and after a weekend of meeting with his staff Kelly made the call.

"Both of those young men had a great battle for that starting position, but Dayne will be our starter, and I expect him to be the starter for 13 weeks," Kelly told the media.

Crist started the 2010 season as the starting quarterback and threw for 2,033 yards and 15 touchdowns before suffering a season-ending knee injury against Tulsa. Rees took over as the starter against Utah and led the Irish to four straight wins to finish the season, tossing 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in those starts.

Either one of these kids can run the Irish offense, as seen last year.  I believe Crist will lead the Irish to a BCS bid.  If he happens to get injured again,  Rees will prove he is more than capable in running the Irish.  The Irish offense is loaded with playmakers and if the defense can improve, the Irish might even make a run for the National Championship.

Too bad noone wants to write about how sleazy Notre Dame a media darling threatened and forced   little and nearly broke Cathedral High in El Paso to remove the  "Fighting Irish" as their nickname. Never mind that Cathedral had used it for 88 years, but didn't have the money for a legal fight. Very classy.
Notre Dame gets the hype and usually falls short -academically  its not even one of the best colleges in its state as Indiana and even Purdue far surpass it
Notre Dame is not only the best school in Indiana, it's one of the top 20 universities in the country.

Notre Dame gets hype because they've won 8 National Championships since they've been kept in the late 1930's. They can claim as many as 16 dating back to Rockne's days. They've also had some of the greatest football players of all-times at both the college and pro level including the greatest QB ever in Joe Montana.

Notre Dame is coming off an 8-5 season and a rout of the sleaziest program in college sports history, Miami University. They have a proven head coach and a solid nucleus. They also have a fairly light schedule for them. Next year it gets tougher with  Oklahoma among others added. They could very easily win 10 or more games.

Notre Dame's ranking this year is deserved. They ended the season strongly(including a bowl win), return a solid nucleus and are well-coached. All the haters jump aboard. The Irish are back and college football is better for it.

I don't have the stats in front of me but... I seriously doubt that Purdue and IU are superior to ND in academics
They're not. Notre Dame & Duke are the 2 best academic schools for football year-in-and year-out. ND consistently wins the award for highest graduation %. A few years back they actually graduated 100% of their student athletes over a 5-year period. Notre Dame, Duke and Boston College are usually in the top 5, if not the top 3.

Notre Dame gets criticized for not recruiting the type of athletes that never graduate(or steal computers). To say they've lowered academic standards is not only laughable, it's downright ignorant and wrong. The Irish are consistently 90% +.

Back to football...

I absolutely disagree with Kelly in starting Dayne Crist. Rees looked like a senior last year in his starts. Crist forces passes and quite frankly has zero leadership ability. Odds are the Irish stumble out of the gate and Rees replaces Crist ASAP. Maybe it will be a 1977 Montana deal.

fgump - dont waste your time responding to morons like him. ND's graduation rate is exceptionally high for student athletes. Some people just spout off with nonsense that doesnt even resemble anything factual. Consider the source. We know it is about not lking Notre Dame so who cares what he thinks...Go Irish!

Hey ND hater (fish2026), what the hell are you talking about? ND falls short academically? I don't have the stats in front of me but... I seriously doubt that Purdue and IU are superior to ND in academics. The ND football team hasn't done well recenlty but the academics have always been superior. Did you get denied entrance into ND? That could explain the hatred. BTW, ND's academic standards have prevented some great athletes from attending.

Probably the most IDIOTIC post that I have ever seen on sportsline.  Sorry to disappoint you; however, ND is ranked #19 in America's best national universities.  Purdue is 56.  Indiana is not even in the top 70.  What a tool!
