Notre Dame fans have high expectations for the Irish heading into Brian Kelly's second year at the helm. They find themselves ranked in the top 20 of both major polls, with CBSSports.com's Brett McMurphy and others placing them in the top 10. Among all this hype, Kelly has kept the quarterback competition open between junior Dayne Crist and sophomore Tommy Rees.

On Tuesday Kelly ended the speculation naming Crist the starting quarterback for Notre Dame's season opener against South Florida on Sept. 3. The two quarterbacks had flip-flopped reps with the first-team, and after a weekend of meeting with his staff Kelly made the call.

"Both of those young men had a great battle for that starting position, but Dayne will be our starter, and I expect him to be the starter for 13 weeks," Kelly told the media.

Crist started the 2010 season as the starting quarterback and threw for 2,033 yards and 15 touchdowns before suffering a season-ending knee injury against Tulsa. Rees took over as the starter against Utah and led the Irish to four straight wins to finish the season, tossing 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in those starts.

Too bad noone wants to write about how sleazy Notre Dame a media darling threatened and forced   little and nearly broke Cathedral High in El Paso to remove the  "Fighting Irish" as their nickname. Never mind that Cathedral had used it for 88 years, but didn't have the money for a legal fight. Very classy.
Notre Dame gets the hype and usually falls short -academically  its not even one of the best colleges in its state as Indiana and even Purdue far surpass it.

Gosh, the guy who loses to Tulsa and Navy (Crist) gets the job while the guy who beats USC, Utah, and Miami gets to sit on the bench. Sounds fair.
in all fairness to Crist though, the team wasnt as good as they were when Rees took the job, when Rees had it, the run game and defense improved. i think Crist is the best QB on their roster.

What changed the competition??

Curious . . how 2 QBs can vie for the starting job . . and then Kelly indicates one will be the starter for 13 weeks . .?
Isn't it just a 'release' to satisfy those press folks that are knocking at the door.  Notice, this is not an official "release"!

I just hope Texas doesnt fall into this category as well and start Garret Gilbert who lost to Iowa State, Baylor, and Kansas State, over a couple of 5 star freshmen who are cleaning his clock in practice.

Experience is SO overated. These coaches egos just wont allow them to see reason sometimes. The fans should have more control over the teams!
