Notre Dame fans have high expectations for the Irish heading into Brian Kelly's second year at the helm. They find themselves ranked in the top 20 of both major polls, with CBSSports.com's Brett McMurphy and others placing them in the top 10. Among all this hype, Kelly has kept the quarterback competition open between junior Dayne Crist and sophomore Tommy Rees.

On Tuesday Kelly ended the speculation naming Crist the starting quarterback for Notre Dame's season opener against South Florida on Sept. 3. The two quarterbacks had flip-flopped reps with the first-team, and after a weekend of meeting with his staff Kelly made the call.

"Both of those young men had a great battle for that starting position, but Dayne will be our starter, and I expect him to be the starter for 13 weeks," Kelly told the media.

Crist started the 2010 season as the starting quarterback and threw for 2,033 yards and 15 touchdowns before suffering a season-ending knee injury against Tulsa. Rees took over as the starter against Utah and led the Irish to four straight wins to finish the season, tossing 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in those starts.

really who cares.  ND qb's have sucked for 30 years.

At least all of the Irish QB's throughout history don't get black balled from their campus like some Ohio State QB's do.

As a Irish fan i try not to believe the hype after the last few times of predictions in the preseason and then the let down in december. But Crist is the more experienced qb and deserved the starting job. The D is much improved and better than what we have had in recent years. If Crist gets hurt Rees is a solid back up to get the job done.If they live up to the hype 9 wins is a reachable goal. and a BCS bowl if they play better than expected. GO IRISH!!!!!!

Rees will have 2 years to run the show after this year.
Except that Crist still has another year of eligibility.  Unless Crist blows people away this year and bolts for the NFL, I fully expect he will be the starter next year as well.  In 2013 it will be a battle between Rees, Hendrix and Golson - but until then Crist is the man (barring another injury, of course).

Great choice ND!!!! Rees will have 2 years to run the show after this year.  It will be Crists show this year and he will do just fine.  He has several weapons in Floyd, Riddick, Toma, etc and a very experienced "D" with 7-8 returning starters.  No worries here and I strongly feel that ND will win at least 9-10 games.

GO IRISH!!!!

Okay I posted a comment but it didnt take apparently. If it shows up I apologize for the dup..not surprised Dayne is starting; just concerned about his past injuries...Make no mistake though if he cant get the job done Tommy will be waiting to take over. Go Irish!

Okay no ND fans are surprised. Crist should get a shot but am concerned because of his injuries. The good thing for BK is he has another good quarterback to fall back on. Of course Rees did well last  season ending with four straight wins but a lot of credit needs to go to the much improved D for those wins. Rees threw 4 pics in the USC game but he is very young and to be thrown in the limelight like he was he did pretty well considering. So Dayne will be the starter but has a lot of pressure on him because Tommy will be available should he not do well. A lot of optimism for the Irish going into this season - hope they live up to the hype...Go Irish!

his knee better hold up or else, rees is going right back out there. i have no problem with the call, but his knee has to be ready to take the punishment from the whole season. ans this time - avoid those pokes in the eye vs michigan. haha.
