Garrett Gilbert named Texas' starting QB

In just another indicator of how close we are to actual football games being played, the biggest quarterback question in the Big 12 was finally answered on Monday morning. The Texas Longhorns announced that Garrett Gilbert will be the team's starting quarterback when they line up against Rice on Saturday in Austin.

Gilbert had been in a battle with Case McCoy, Connor Wood and David Ash since the spring, but Gilbert has won the fight. For now at least. McCoy is currently listed behind Gilbert on the depth chart.

I say Gilbert is the starter for now because from most of the reports I read and heard about the position this spring and fall, Gilbert wasn't exactly blowing anybody away in camp. Throw in the fact that Gilbert threw only 10 touchdown passes compared to 17 interceptions last season as the Longhorns finished 5-7 and missed out on a bowl game, and I'm not sure he can be counted on to keep the job.

I'm of the opinion that Gilbert will improve in his second season as a starter, but if he's still not playing well enough or turning the ball over, I don't think Mack Brown will wait very long to pull the trigger on a switch. Texas doesn't want to endure another season like 2010.

the poster before you addressed the 17 picks...many balls did get picked because of the recievers... also it's pretty hard to throw an accurate pass when you barely have time to even glance at your 1st and 2nd recieving option..and then on top of that a lackluster run game doesn't help.. plus u can see the OC called the same few plays over and over.. and that's why the OC is gone.. I'm not behind GG a 100%.. I know he made mistakes.. and if the same mistakes keep happening over and over.. I hope Mack makes a change... and tries one of the younger guys...

Well after the benching of Major Applewhite in order to give Christy Sims the job based on his last name, and the insuing single handed sabotage that Sims committed in every big game on some great Texas teams (other than him), I don't really trust Mack Brown's judgement on picking the best QB to help our team win. I think most of us were hoping that Ash, Wood, or McCoy would play well enough to take the job after the disaster of last year. That said I hope he either does well or flames badly enough that someone else has to be given the opportunity. Rice game won't tell us much, but BYU and UCLA sure will.

I am under the impression that we do not know how good or bad Garrett Gilbert really is yet. I am looking forward to seeing him under the leadership of a real coach.

In the work place, when you hire someone new, you have to make EVERY attempt to pull the best out of them.  Mack's job is just that, he hired Gilbert and he has to make the best of him.  Gilbert has to try, which he has, and if he can't its ok to move on.  Mack will have a decision to make this year and it will be the right one.  Quit being so overly critical of this game.  It's a game.  I love the Longhorns.  My favorite player is still Peter Gardere.  Gilbert is just a kid, let him grow, learn and become a man.  Honestly, at least he isn't online, on some sports comment stream criticizing some kid for playing a better game than he can, but not playing up to "his" standards...

Ugg, i havent liked him last year and unless he makes a big turn around and actually WINS this year, i wont change my views on him. i dont think he's that good a QB and dont know why Case McCoy or Conner Wood arent getting the job, but oh well.

A huge disappointment!  It wasn't Gilbert's job to lose.  Gilbert lost the job last season when throwing too many balls to the opposing team. Since Mack wouldn't give Case McCoy or anyone else a shot then, why expect him to now?  I am afraid Longhorn fans are in for another sad year.  Mack can't pull the trigger and give up on Gilbert.  Mack's logic last year was that he did decently in the NC game and showed signs of being a great QB.  And when that failed, Mack must be saying, "Gilbert has experience, maybe this is the year he will show leadership and ability.  Another season like last and the Longhorn faithful will be more than ready to pull the trigger on switching Mack out.  Mack is making a conservative call and alums like me are going to pay big time.  Little McCoy needs in the game now when UT is playing the weaker schools.  Don't put him in against OU, Mack, and then tell us you were right all along!  A 7 and 5 season with Gilbert will be seen by some as an improvement.  But it won't be.  I would rather go 6 and 6 with Case and look forward to the 2012 season than go 7 and 5 with Gilbert and hope for an 8 and 4 season in 2013 with Gilbert still the QB.

smokie: I have no dog in this fight, but I totally agree with you. GG seriously looks like a pro with his passing ability, but there were so many problems on that team last year that it exagerrated anything he did wrong. And clearly, he was not responsible for all 17 interceptions. Lots of things went wrong on the receiving end (at least in games I watched). I do however question one thing about his appearance. That squinty eyed look gives off the impression of someone who lacks confidence....and I don't say it to be insulting, but just because it could affect the demeanor of the team around him.
