Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

The Big 12 has thrown out some big names for potential replacements, with perhaps none being bigger than the old conference expansion standby, Notre Dame. Unfortunately for the Big 12, if Notre Dame is the conference's Plan A for replacing Texas A&M, then it's already time to move on to Plan B.

In a talk with the American-Statesman's Kirk Bohls, Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick repeated the same party line he's been repeating for years now. Notre Dame isn't interested in your conference.

“Our priority — and our clear priority — is maintaining our football independence and continuing to build our relationship with the Big East with our other sports,” said Swarbrick.

Sorry, Big 12, but it's not going to happen, and if you ever felt otherwise, you were just being foolish.

If Notre Dame was to ever decide that it wanted to join a conference, the Big Ten would be it's first destination. Not only has the Big Ten invited the school numerous times, but tradition wise, it just makes a lot more sense. The school has longstanding rivalries against three Big Ten schools already in Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue, so the transition wouldn't be that difficult to make.

Plus, even if Notre Dame wanted to join the Big 12, would it even make sense for the Big 12 to want Notre Dame in the fold? Think about it, one of the main reasons there is such unrest in the Big 12 in the first place is the preferential treatment many in the conference feel Texas gets, particularly with the new arrival of the Longhorn Network.

Well guess what Notre Dame has hopes of launching in the future? That's right, it's own network. So how would adding a second school that gets to play by its own rules help matters any?

I'm hoping the BIG 12 doesn't bother asking.

ND doesn't add anything except travel time.

Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

I think what would make the most sense for ND is a 12 team Big East with Army & Navy brought in as football only members. My proposal would see 3 four-team divisions: north (army, navy, uconn,nd) south (tcu, usf, cin, lou) and originals (rut, syr, pitt,wv), with the 2 highest bcs ranked teams playing in the title game.  If you maintain the 7 conference games, the irish will play all their division foes and 2 teams from both the originals and southern division while keeping rivalries with USC, and the Big Ten. Look at their 2011 schedule- they already play Pitt and South Florida, just substitute Uconn for BC, Rutgers for Maryland, Army for Air Force and Louisville for Wake Forest and you have what would be their every other year Big East conference schedule. It's pretty much equal in quality to what they play now but a whole lot of an easier path to the BCS bowls and the added exposure of a conference title game. NBC sports is going to make a major play for the Big East, so Notre Dame would have all 6 home and 3 road conference games on network TV . Army and Navy get to schedule 5 pushovers so only 1 conference win a year gets them bowl eligible. Finally, all the Originals division teams play 1 game against the Southern division teams in a "unofficial" conference matchup to ease scheduling. The gulph between rich and poor is growing so it's no time to be adding CUSA teams as full members and Army and Navy are easy to brush off when the armegeddon comes and you need to merge with the remaining ACC. It has no impact on basketball. Everybody has a plan, this is mine.

Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

There's no chance that Notre Dame goes to the Big 12.  There's no chance that Notre Dame joins ANY conference for footbal, EXCEPT an outisde chance at the Big Ten in the distant future.  It would make sense because they already have rivalries with teams like Michigan, Michigan State, even Purdue.  Then ND vs OSU and PSU would be great matchups.  ND vs some of those Big 12 teams has no appeal.

Go Irish!

Actually dstartosu and fizz you are both right and you are both wrong. ND football has never been rejected by a conference because they have never applied to be in a conference. the big ten did in fact reject notre dame in the past but the reject. Was based mainly on the fact that ND football would not join the big ten as part of the move. The big ten basically said no football then no other sport. On a side no all of you that think ND should join a conference need to stop thinking like a fan and recognize college football for the business that it is. Notre Dame is the only school that has an exclusive NETWORK TV contract. That means they collect all the money themselves and share with no one. Schools that start their own networks are not getting the same thing because the networks are part of a paid provider package limiting their audience and therefore revenue. Additionally Notre dame does not have to split any bowl game money with the rest of their conference. No college team in any sport have such a great deal. Financially it would cost Notre Dame hundreds of millions of dollars to join a conference.

Fornelli misses the point. All the other major conferences split the spoils evenly. Texas and the Big XII don't which is why the Big XII makes more sense for Notre Dame. They can be a conference member and still cut their own tv deals, just like Texas. No other conference will let ND do that. Texas would and probably so would Oklahoma. Then you add BYU and you have the nucleus of a hybrid "independent/conference".
Next, you add the service academies and a few tag-slongs from the old Big XII and you have a very marketable conference with enough tv-ready matchups to make it all work.

Yes, it would be a tough sell to get ND and BYU on board but it would be the one conference that would still let them cut their own tv deals and protect other traditional rivalries.

Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

I know ND has all this tradition playing some big ten schools by why wouldnt they just join the big east?! I know we arent the traditional power conference but it would make the most sence, considering all of NDs other sports compete in the conference.  At the very least it would be the easiest option. Let the big east haters respond.

Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

What a non-story. This is why we need games to start. If suggested aliens landed on the White House lawn, half the mainstream news outlets would at least assign a guy to look into it. That laughable blog also suggested BYU might be interested. Sorry guys, but after that lie you put out about the PAC 12 wanting a huge group of BIG TEX schools last year, people are less likely to take you seriously. Except maybe Dennis Dudd.

Appearently the Big 12 didn't meat their DUI arrest, rape and student videographers killed quota last year.
