Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

The Big 12 has thrown out some big names for potential replacements, with perhaps none being bigger than the old conference expansion standby, Notre Dame. Unfortunately for the Big 12, if Notre Dame is the conference's Plan A for replacing Texas A&M, then it's already time to move on to Plan B.

In a talk with the American-Statesman's Kirk Bohls, Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick repeated the same party line he's been repeating for years now. Notre Dame isn't interested in your conference.

“Our priority — and our clear priority — is maintaining our football independence and continuing to build our relationship with the Big East with our other sports,” said Swarbrick.

Sorry, Big 12, but it's not going to happen, and if you ever felt otherwise, you were just being foolish.

If Notre Dame was to ever decide that it wanted to join a conference, the Big Ten would be it's first destination. Not only has the Big Ten invited the school numerous times, but tradition wise, it just makes a lot more sense. The school has longstanding rivalries against three Big Ten schools already in Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue, so the transition wouldn't be that difficult to make.

Plus, even if Notre Dame wanted to join the Big 12, would it even make sense for the Big 12 to want Notre Dame in the fold? Think about it, one of the main reasons there is such unrest in the Big 12 in the first place is the preferential treatment many in the conference feel Texas gets, particularly with the new arrival of the Longhorn Network.

Well guess what Notre Dame has hopes of launching in the future? That's right, it's own network. So how would adding a second school that gets to play by its own rules help matters any?

Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

In all fairness, it should be mentioned that the Big 10 has rejected Notre Dame several times as well.  They're like Sam & Diane.

Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

Why would Notre Dame want to plop itself down on a deck chair of the Titantic?
Besides, as Swarbrick inferred, they have most of their program on the Carpathia (Big East). Not the best ship afloat but it seems to be sailing along just fine.

Bring back the old Southwest conference.  Keep the TEN teams from the BIG 12, decimate Conference USA's West division by inviting old SWC teams of Houston, Rice, SMU and inviting geographically friendly teams Tulsa and UTEP.  The last team to invite back to the SWC would be TCU, which just joined the BIG Least but was a member of the SWC (1923-1996).  The SWC could have two 8 team divisions and a championship game with the winner securing a BCS bid.  It would take several years before the lower tier teams compete but with the number of division I athletes in Texas and Oklahoma, a competitive league from top to bottom could be achieved.  GO Irish!

Texas should be the team that just goes independent.  The Big 12 is turning into a joke.   Nebraska is gone. A-M gone.

When A&M leaves. the Big Tex will be below the Big East in quality. If they add SMU and Houston they should lose their BCS autobid!

Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

Why when it is obvious that Texas is trying to quietly destroy the Big 12 so they can go independent without being blamed for destroying the Big 12 would Notre Dame join what is soon to be the next conference USA?

Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

Better chance for the Big 12 to get to 12, than Big 10 to get to 10.

Notre Dame will say no to the Big 12

The Big 12 is the only league that Notre Dame would likely ever join.  The Big 10 Network is at odds with the Notre Dame deal.  Money talks and the Irish can maintain their sweetheart deal in the Big 12.  Money is certainly more important than geography in the modern world.  The Big 12 actually makes a lot of sense for the Irish in terms of keeping its TV money.

It's highly unlikely, but a longshot 5% chance  is better than the 0% chance in any other league.

Notre Dame should never join a conference that can't count.
