Report: BYU in discussions with Big 12

Wednesday, BYU officials released a statement condemning conference expansion "conjecture" involving the Cougars as a "distraction" its football program didn't need. We're going to humbly suggest, however, that the Cougars simply get used to it.

Because after this report from the Salt Lake Tribune, it's safe to say that conjecture is only getting started. According to the Tribune, BYU officials and representatives from the Big 12 have already met for discussions regarding "what conditions and assurances [BYU] would need to make the jump" to the soon-to-be Texas A&M-free conference.

Among those "conditions" would be how the Big 12 might coexist with BYU's existing television network, BYUtv, not to mention the rest of BYU's athletics programs; currently, the Cougars are scheduled to join the West Coast Conference in sports other than football beginning with the 2011-2012 athletics season. The Tribune reported that "some of the discussions involve the possibility of BYU joining the Big 12 for football only."

Also reportedly offering "input" to the talks? Representatives from Notre Dame, BYU's "partner" in independence who have an six-year football series scheduled with the Cougars. ESPN's football contract with BYU was also a point of discussion.

All of this makes yesterday's statement seem even more misleading. Before, its omission of any actual denials regarding the Cougars' conference affiliation might have simply been an oversight. But now, it's obvious those omissions were intentional; the rumors linking BYU to the Big 12 have legs, and thickly-built legs at that.

It's still too soon to say BYU-to-the-Big 12 is a done deal, or even likely; with rumors also abundant that a bundle of Pac-12 invitations will have the Big 12 dissolved by Halloween, BYU may not wind up with anywhere to make the jump to. But as far as the Big 12's survival goes, sitting down at the table with a name-brand program like BYU isn't a bad first step at all.

Well there's your problem - your source is the Salt Lake Tribune.  In addition to being compulsively anti-BYU, the Trib is a worhtless source of journalism.  Seriously, the local high school has more reliable information than the Trib.

In other headlines from the Tribune, BYU joins the WAC, Texas A&M joins the CFL, and Batboy returns from hiding!

There's a difference between BYUTV and the Longhorn Network. BYUTV just wants the ability to re-broadcast any games that were originally televised by ESPN or FOX and have them on-demand for online viewers, and they also want the ability to broadcast games that aren't going to be picked up by FOX or ESPN (even if it's an in-conference game). Also, BYUTV is not going to be showing high school football games or do anything else that would give it a recruiting advantage over its conference mates. Really, compared to the Longhorn network BYUTV should be a pretty easy thing for the Big 12 members to deal with.

The only reason that anybody would want the Irish in the Big 12 is to give us another reason to cheer against them.  I'd say we ask Tulsa to join before we ask Notre Dame.

Everyone -
Put the possiblity of Notre Dame joining out of your mind, Notre Dame has.  It isn't a consideration period.  Go Irish!!!

Report: BYU in discussions with Big 12

You do realize it may not be in the money sports such as football, but Baylor has annually finished in the top 4 in the conference in total sports since the Big 12's inception.   Your post is nothing but taking half-truths and bending them to what you think sounds the best or some sad attempt at humor.

Here is the best case scenario.  Kick out the Baptists at Baylor and now the Big 12 is down to 8 teams.  Bring in the Methodists at SMU, the Christians at TCU, the Catholics at Notre Dame, and the Mormons at BYU.  Then you have a conference.  Even the traditionally weak football schools, KU and K State, would be good competition to ND and BYU in basketball.  I realize the Irish want to maintain Big 10 ties in the other sports, okay, fine. Why deep six Baylor?  First as an incentive to ND that they won't have any conference team with the same color uniforms.  Second, they are baptists.  Third, Waco sucks.  Waco used to be the capitol because it was central and on a main waterway, the Brazos River.  But they didn't remain the capitol because no one wanted to live in Waco and so they gave the land to the damn baptists.  The curre

If they went for a Colorado team, it would be Air Force. While they are a service academy, they are a very good program that last year played Big 12 Champion Oklahoma and nearly pulled out a win.

Unlikely though. They'll likely pull in BYU if looking for ten and if 12 Boise and another Texas School.

Not sure why the Big 12 would want another member with their own TV network.  While I am not totally up on the relationship between aTm and UT, I seem to remember that the Longhorn Network was one of the issues.  Was that also a problem with the other Big 12 schools?

Geographically the move makes sense.  Do you then invite Colorado State to get back the Denver market?

Report: BYU in discussions with Big 12

The Big 12 is always behind the curve on this expansion thing. They should have offered something to BYU last year when they lost Nebraska and Colorado and BYU would have jumped. But now the conference is on shakey ground and BYU probably doesn't want to jump on board a sinking ship.
