This news will come as a shock to absolutely no one who watched his performance and subsequent benching in Texas' game against BYU on Saturday night, but at least now it's been made official: Garrett Gilbert is no longer the starting quarterback for the Texas Longhorns.

Gilbert is now listed as the team's third quarterback on the depth chart behind both Case McCoy and David Ash. As for which one of those two will play when Texas travels to UCLA this weekend, the answer is both. The school has given no official word on which quarterback will take the first snap of the game on offense, but both will see time under center against the Bruins.

Texas also announced that running back Malcolm Brown will start after he lead the team in rushing the first two weeks of the season.

As for Gilbert, after he won the quarterback competition this fall, the year got off to a somewhat promising start. He didn't light the air on fire in Texas' opener against Rice, as he completed only 13 of 23 passes for 239 yards and a touchdown, but the fact he didn't turn the ball over provided a glimmer of hope. A glimmer that disappeared quickly on Saturday night when he completed only 2 of 8 passes and threw 2 interceptions against BYU before being booed off the field and replaced.

McCoy and Ash then came on to lead the Longhorns to a comeback 17-16 win over the Cougars.

STOP roulendfdrlie; you're getting me all worked up into a lather bro. I just might start trolling for rich, hot women just to personally test your theory. If it gets too serious my man, I'll give you a call to get my head straightened out. Actually, what you stated was pure genius and can you just imagine the Longhorns vs. UCLA this weekend? Half the Rose Bowl will be the type of women you talked so highly of earlier.

Its hard to take anything seriously or objectively from someone with a name that has the words HOOKEM in it.  The university of Texas breeds dicontent and venom to every one that it comes into contact with.  If you are in a conference with them, it will never last, if you play a home and home with them they break off their end of the away game usually, if you beat them they make excuses and fire everyone, if they beat you it was a dominating performance, they just rub everyone the wrong way, and they think its everone elses fault.

The University of Texas is like a lot of women I know, Good lookin and born rich and built nice in all the right places but you spend some time with her and eventually her true colors start coming out.  She is actually spoiled rotten, with a black heart, and eventually you cant even look at her without seeing all her flaws because her personality is just that of someone who has always gotten their way.  The trick is figuring this out before you either get into bed with them or become irreversably jointed at the hip with them.  That is why a really good divorce is expensive, because its worth it, especially when you really have to get away from someone like that.

I really don't think there's a level-headed person out there that would be jealous of UT for anything.  Either their TV deal falls apart, or they go independent and find themselves in the company of a floundering Notre Dame.  In addition to that, Mack Brown has proven himself to be a whining cry baby.  Who else fires/loses their entire coaching staff, but thinks their own s@!t don't stink?  Who else goes on national TV, during other teams' games, to beg for voters to rank them higher than they should?  Nope, the arrogance of UT has finally caught up with them.  They are now painted into a corner.  It should be interesting to see what they do now.

Wow! You must be an Aggie or Husker fan, either way, get over it! I wish I had just a penny for every time I heard people whining about LHN, I'd be rich! Focus on your team, whomever that is, and stop whining! It even sounds like a little jealousy on your part?

Dear Mack Brown, please reconsider you attempt to rectify your quarterback situation by again giving Gilbert another shot at the starting job, because it is just too funny to watch your hair turn white and fall out as you ponder your next move (see applewhite, every descision made between the years 1999 and 2005).  Horns do not forget that you were one game away from firing this clown on October 2005 when he hadnt beat OU in 5 years or even started 5-0 since 1983,,,???  really, anyway that worked out well for you in the end, thank god for all those tallented recruits that you get every year.  By the way, I think I have figured out why you want a network that no one can see your games on,,,, its so no one will realize how bad you are.  Do you really think any of your fans want to watch you beat up on Rice, UTEP, North Texas and East Popcorn State U? or watch girls indoor track and tidddlywinks 24/7/365?  It will never work, and by the way, the goal isnt to get people that already like your team to watch the games, the goal is to expland your viewership to those that did already watch the games, thats marketing and expansion.  This entire network idea is bad, and it will play itself out in front of the entire nation just how myopic and ego driven it really is.

And to think those orange kool-aid drinking jackwagons on Orangebloods said Gilbert would make Colt McCoy look like a third-string HS junior varsity quarterback. lol

Not my style to criticize any collegiate player, but Mack the Knife is a different story. That clown had Vince Young and Colt bail his butt out of so many jams, that it's now catching up to him and the Longhorns. I really hope Texas joins a real conference(the PAC 10) and finds itself battling Cal or Oregon State for 6th place. Nobody outside of the Republic gives a damn about UT and the superiority status they enjoyed in the Big 12 will become a distant memory. Texas; you better handle UCLA this Saturday or else it could be an Independence Bowl appearance in December. At least that would be an improvement over 2010.

Can they stop whining about Mack Brown now?

Mack Brown's "QB rotation" in the second half was a game-changer.  I'm sure 'Horns fans will still complain about his playcalling, though.  Those same whiners will miss him when he is gone.

Grow up or move to Oklahoma.
Ah . . . one of those same Whorn fans who rented airplanes to fly classless banners over two OU games.  The same Whorns who put an asterisk next to 2008 for the 3-way tie.  The same Whorns whose coach went on national TV during other teams' games, and shamelessly begged for the voters to rank them higher than OU.

And you're implying that Oklahoma needs to grow up?!?!?!  That's got to be one of the most idiotic, hypocritical statements I've ever heard from a Whorn fan.

As an earlier post stated, thank God Mack made the right decision and didn't repeat the Sims abomination by giving the QB job to the kid whos daddy has the most $$$. Also I'm glad he gave the starting RB nod to Malcolm Brown after just 2 games, which I guess is slower than I would have but sooner than I expected Mack to. Whitaker and Johnson are total journeyman, and the combo of Monroe/Bergeron behind Brown is the punch we've been missing sonce Jamal Charles left. I'm liking our chances a lot better now than the 1st half of the BYU game when I could just laugh, HOOK 'EM !!!
