Georgia Prez kinda sorta backs Richt

Georgia head coach Mark Richt came into the season on one of the hottest seats in the country, and following two losses in the team's first two games, that chair hasn't cooled off any. It doesn't matter that the two losses came against Boise State and South Carolina, two teams ranked in the top ten of the AP poll, they weren't wins and right now what Georgia fans want are wins.

The truth is, with every loss in Athens, regardless of the opponent, the odds of Mark Richt returning in 2012 shrink. Though that doesn't mean he has no support, as Georgia president Dr. Michael Adams called for fans to support the football program and Richt no matter how the year has started.

“I don’t believe I have ever commented on any coach mid season," Adams said on Thursday during a UGA Cabinet meeting. "You know the answer. What we do with every head coach — every head coach, not just the high-profile head coaches – but at the end of the season the AD sits down and makes a judgment. Then he makes a judgment whether or not he needs to talk to the president about that.

“The issue for me right now is I think this is the time for all of us to come together and get behind this group of guys who played a heck of a game last Saturday and deserve our support. I’ve never folded on anything 15 or 20 percent into it, and that’s what we would be doing.

"I’d love to see the stadium full Saturday for probably what will not be the most high-profile opponent we’ll play this year. I go to the locker room. I know these young men. I know a number of our student-athletes. We had a heck of an effort last Saturday. There’s nobody here who likes to win more than I do. But it’s time for us as a community to get behind this team, support them from now ’til the end of the season. And once the whole body of work is in, we’ll do what we do every year. We’ll see where we are.”

It's not exactly a vote of confidence for Richt, but if I'm a head coach I'd much rather have the school president telling people to support me than just saying "no comment." That being said, Adams isn't really coming out in support of Richt either. He's just trying to make sure the fans still support the team, and by extension, the head coach.

If Georgia keeps losing, whether the fans support the team or not, Richt won't be back in 2012.

It wouldn't matter if Lombardi or Bear Bryant came back and coached the Bulldogs.  Georgia is just a loser no matter WHO the coach is.  Get over it.

Who do UGA fans think they are? Richt has led UGA to three SEC East championships, two conference titles, won 2 Sugar Bowls, and is one of the winningest active coaches in the game. Before Richt, UGA needed the greatest RB in history playing for them to win titles. Now, the recruiting is there, he's a proven winner, he's a class act, and I can just imagine how many teams would be lining up to interview Richt if UGA was to let him go. The UGA fans who want Richt gone are living in a false reality that the Dawgs should be competing for the national title every year.

We all need to rally around coach Richt, because who knows who Georgia will bring in to replace him.  Richt is delivering a quality win for opponents, and SEC east conference opponents benefit the most.

The issue in Athens and with the fans is the lack of depth year in and year out. Richt is a great recruiter in terms of the rankings, but without fail we come in to each season thin at certain positions. 2011, Middle Linebacker...Ogletree goes out the second drive of week 1 and we haven't stopped anyone sense. 2010 it was the offensive line (still an issue in 2011). 2010 it was quaterback and so on. Recruiting Rankings don't predict success, and a lack of toughness doesn't generate wins in the SEC.

The dreaded "vote of confidence". Richt is toast unless he wins 9...incl FL, TN & GT.

I also really like Richt.  There's no shame in the tough loss they suffered last week.  This season reminds me of Ray Goff's last, when his key players kept getting injured.  I hope, for the sake of Richt, his team can stay healthy, and he gets some guys back.  He also was delt a big blow in the offseason when he lost his experienced running backs.

I hope he has a strong finish to the season and can regain some of the support he's lost among fans.

Richt deserves support

The Georgia fans are over-reacting.  Richt is a class act and anybody would be lucky to have him as their coach.  The reality of this situation is that (A) Georgia had a bad season last year; and (B) they've played the toughest schedule in the country thus far.  If the Dawgs end up 9-3 and playing in a New Year's Day Bowl then they'll all be singing his praises again.  If they go 8-4 and win their bowl then he'll still be safe for another season.  Anything worse and all bets are off....

Another sign that Richt's support base is crumbling.
