Osceola is a small town in Missouri with a population of 950 people. Though just because it's a tiny town now, that doesn't mean it's always been one, as back in 1861 the town was a "prosperous city" that 2,500 people lived in. Half the population were Unionists, while the other half were secessionists, and in 1861 a group of 2,000 men called the "jayhawkers" came to the town from Kansas and terrorized the local folk.

The men, part of the Kansas Brigade led by then senator Jim Lane, came to Osceola and looted the town, set it ablaze and executed a dozen men in the town square. By the time the jayhawkers were finished, only 200 people remained in the town.

So as you'd expect, the term "jayhawker" isn't exactly one that conjures up wonderful memories for people of the town, and that's why Osceola passed a resolution on Tuesday asking Kansas to stop “the celebration of this murderous gang of terrorists by an institution of ‘higher education’ in such a brazen and malicious manner.”

Kansas' response? It was pretty classic.

“A Jayhawk is a blue bird with a red head and a big yellow beak that wears boots," Kansas News Service Director Jill Jess told the Columbia Daily Tribune. "It would be hard to confuse it with anyone with terrorist intent, though we admit we have been terrorizing the Tigers on the basketball court for some time. Tigers have been known to kill people. Bears, too.”

Well played, Jayhawks. Well played.

By the way - the contraction for 'you are' is ''you're' not 'your' as you posted in your grammar lesson.

Oh come on!  Jim Lane never did anything except for Jim Lane.  He started with the pro-slavery people and when they rejected him he went with the Free-soilers.  During the war a Jayhawker was a term of derision and most of those people were out only for themselves, just like many of the Missouri guerillas.  Please spare us the misguided morality lesson and read a little history.

A word to the wise, try not to misspell when saying someone/something is stupid. I'm a Jayhawk, and your an idiot. Here are some tips for whom I am sure is a Tiger, probably a drop out. Periods come at the end of sentences, they look like this: ".". The word "to" is a preposition and an adverb, regardless, your use is wrong and you sound stupid. To answer your question, the Jayhawk wears boots, which you must have learned before you wrote your little rant, which again points out that you are... guess it.... stupid. I hope to never hear back from you.

I love the Jayhawk. The mascot is unlike any other and the name represents a group of men who fought against pro-slavery forces, giving freedom to people who were enslaved by many bigot Missouri citizens in the 1860's. I don't mean to imply all citizens in Missouri are racist and feel justified to use and destroy lives of a segment of the population based on racial differences, but many are still bitter that the south wasn't able to succeed and lost the civil war. It was terrible that the Jayhawkers were forced to choose the lesser of two evils, but if you love freedom then you love what the Jayhawks fought and died for. Thanks Jayhawkers, Jayhawks, Kansan's, and their supporters. -Rock Chalk

My college had a mascot for over 100 years and no one spoke up, but the NCAA made us change anyway.  Now it is some flaming homo guy.  Hopefully gays don't speak up for 100 years or we will have to change again.  Maybe an inanimate carbon rod.

That is freaking hilarious!

Gotta say I live in KC area and really don't care about either way, but as an Oklahoma State fan I get the bitterness of rivalry.  As an OSU grad and fan I have always wondered how OU could revel in the shame and disgrace of their nickname "Sooners".  A Sooner is a despicable, sneaky, rule bending, land thief.  They did not wait for the gun and claim their land lawfully.  Rather they illegally snuck in and stole it in the middle of the night and did not play by the rules.  Actually, it is quite an appropriate nickname for OU I guess.
