In the most recent episode of the Emmy Award-winning drama Conference Realignment, the Big East leadership emerged from a three-hour meeting in New York City with plans to "aggressively" pursue replacements for Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

The message from the conference has been a plan to hold the two departing schools to the 27-month withdrawal period required in the conference by-laws. However, according to a Sporting News report some of the Big East's current members would like to see the two programs leave "as soon as possible."

Part of Marinatto's "aggressive" plans for replacement reportedly includes extending football-only invitations to Navy and Air Force. The conference's membership still includes their seven non-football schools, and adding the service academies to the gridiron slate would be an easy transition. Other suggested moves for expansion include looking towards Conference USA, where schools like UCF, Houston, and ECU have expressed interest in joining the Big East.

A big piece of Tuesday's meeting was also getting TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte on board with the future of the conference. TCU is scheduled to move to the Big East in 2012, but the threat of violent realignment in the college football landscape had the school's leadership nervous about the future of the conference. For the Big East to remain attractive to the BCS, a perennial contender like TCU will be a necessary component.

But regardless of when Syracuse and Pittsburgh leave, it does seem as though the realignment shift has begun to slow - at least for the moment. The Pac-12 expressed no interest in expanding at this time, and it does not appear that the Big Ten has any desire to either. With Texas and Oklahoma recommitting themselves to the Big 12 under new leadership, it is likely that Missouri will not be making any moves to the East anytime soon.

Are you implying that UofL football is better than TCU football?  What are you smoking?  TCU lowers the status of the Big East?  I personally think that all of those teams would give UofL all that they could handle.  Get off you're high horse and get back to reality.  No higher profile teams are going to take a step down to the big east.

Seriously what did everyone exspect in the first place? When the ACC cherry picked the Big East way back in 03, it started the domino effect. It was a matter of time before either the Big East or ACC would be joined. It took a decade but you have 5 almost 6 Big East school in the ACC. That is close to half of the conference. It is a shame that it had to be this way, but JB said it best when (sorry excuse) ND wouldn't join they created the final tidal wave. They got greedy and are about to join the ACC because they will not exist in the next decade as a independent. Sorry but that is the reality of farm teams (college football). What is making matters even worse is the assumption that the Big East is still presuming Basket Ball as it's main attraction. That is cool if you don't play football...

Who do you think I should switch to??? Miami so I can spend the next 10 years not watching my team in a bowl game or perhaps OSU who cant seem to get anyone to come there without buying them a Lexus. Seems that worked out great for Miami they go to the ACC and still wont ever see a NC lol....think i'll stay with WVU at least I know who im cheering for. Im as upset as anyone that the BE has turned into this. I don't understand why people are saying just because PITT and Cuse left we shouldn't get our BCS bid its not like they were the confrence power house anyway.

You are right.  The Big East got its start in 1979 by a bunch of Catholic schools getting together to set-up a basketball conference.

Next few years, several schools (Virginia Tech) came in as football only.  But why or how they started down a football path, I have never seen any explanation.

Joe Pa at Penn State had wanted a eastern all-sports conference for years.  Could not get one started.

When Penn State wanted to join a conference they applied to the BIG EAST and were rejected (Same Big East officals must still be in power today?).  Penn State was rejected by 1 vote. Penn State then applied to the Big 1G and were accepted.  In the process, Penn State lost 2 of their biggest rivals - Pitt and WV.  These 3 schools are within 100 miles of each other.

Penn State being rejected by 1 vote is almost ironic.  Years earlier, when the ACC was being formed, West Virginia applied and was rejected by 1 vote - that single vote was cast by Wake Forest and the stated reason was because WVU had been to a football bowl game the year before.  Given the size of the school and the performance of its teams, who would ever have thought that Wake Forest would have that much say in anything?

Seems like the Big East's application to play 1AA football is moving along nicely!  Big East fans - do yourself a favor.  Pick a new team to follow in a real conference.

This sounds like yet another smoke & mirror "change" to make it appear something is being done.  But nothing changes.  Its the same old BS.  And the same old give in to the basketball-only schools to not upset the current balance of power within the conference.

First and foremost (to some schools), the BE was formed in 1979 as a basketball conference.

Miami left because they complained and nothing was done to address their concerns.  That was in 2003.  And these same old issues are still being "worked on"?  This is just as bad as the Big 12 vs Texas mess.

After Miami left (2003-2005), the BE told the remaining football schools that they should leave and form a conference where the schools played both football and basketball.  If the football schools had started a new conference, they would have lost their AQ for a BCS bowl.  So they stayed.

And the BE raided Conference-USA for new members.  Does this sound familiar?  Is this what is being proposed today as a solution?

None of the schools mentioned as being "new additions" would raise the reputation of the BE in football.  It merely solidify's the BE reputation as a not-for-prime-time football conference.

I think its time to finally admit the truth.  The BE wants to be a "only basketball" conference.  The BE doesn't want football mentioned in the same sentence as BE.  All the football teams should leave - either go to the ACC or Big 12.

As for wanting 'Cuse & Pitt gone faster?  Would bet the BE lets them leave quicker without paying a higher exit fee.  Just to get the word "football" away from the focus of the BE - basketball headlines.

The BE should give up all their football pl;aying schools to the Big 12.  And get Texas for the Big East.  Texas could have special treatement like Notre Dame.  The BE would be happier.  The Big 12 would be happier.  The football playing schools would all be happiers.

And the fans would be happier not hearing this BS.

The one bright spot for the Big East on getting the service academies is the AFN. It may not hold water against the giants such as ESPN or NBC, but it does reach a huge world market on every base, every command that has a tv. I know because I use to and still watch it. The thought of seeing your home team play back in the states is a great feeling. Even watch our future leaders play some pigskin is a great moment! To bad everyone doesn't care and all they see is $$$. At least the Cuse and Pitt got out when the timing was right. I wish we could bring Uconn and WVU or Uconn and ND. (ND is as irrelevant as ECU in terms of quality on the field). Yet they have a huge following..We'll see how this mess will work out in the next season or two if not the later.

Why would ECU be bad for Big East football.  Didn't they beat WVU a few years ago?
