In the most recent episode of the Emmy Award-winning drama Conference Realignment, the Big East leadership emerged from a three-hour meeting in New York City with plans to "aggressively" pursue replacements for Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

The message from the conference has been a plan to hold the two departing schools to the 27-month withdrawal period required in the conference by-laws. However, according to a Sporting News report some of the Big East's current members would like to see the two programs leave "as soon as possible."

Part of Marinatto's "aggressive" plans for replacement reportedly includes extending football-only invitations to Navy and Air Force. The conference's membership still includes their seven non-football schools, and adding the service academies to the gridiron slate would be an easy transition. Other suggested moves for expansion include looking towards Conference USA, where schools like UCF, Houston, and ECU have expressed interest in joining the Big East.

A big piece of Tuesday's meeting was also getting TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte on board with the future of the conference. TCU is scheduled to move to the Big East in 2012, but the threat of violent realignment in the college football landscape had the school's leadership nervous about the future of the conference. For the Big East to remain attractive to the BCS, a perennial contender like TCU will be a necessary component.

But regardless of when Syracuse and Pittsburgh leave, it does seem as though the realignment shift has begun to slow - at least for the moment. The Pac-12 expressed no interest in expanding at this time, and it does not appear that the Big Ten has any desire to either. With Texas and Oklahoma recommitting themselves to the Big 12 under new leadership, it is likely that Missouri will not be making any moves to the East anytime soon.

Schools want Syracuse & Pitt gone soon

That's the best news that both schools have heard this week!!!

Marrinato is a goof.  Whether he acts now or later, you have to believe that Uconn, and perhaps Rutgers, WVU and ND are on their way out as well.
I'd love to see Pitt or SU with the conference this season.  Think Marrinato awards them with the trophy or ship it UPS-collect to either school?

I could hardly call the Big East a better football conference than the ACC.  West Virginia has a good program, but so does Virginia Tech and Florida State.  Any other program in the  Big East has a duplicate program in the ACC or better.  I don't give a damn about BCS records when none of them include a BCS title game.  The others are all exhibition.

Well I guess we'll see how aggressive Marrinato is going to be.  He has every reason to add teams now and we'll see if he sticks to his word or takes his time while he leaves Syracuse and Pitt hang for two years.

He'd be wise to act now and let them go.  If he decides to take his time (since he has 27 months) this could lead to other teams departing while he waits.

Plus, what a slap in the face if either Syracuse or Pitt wins the Big East Tournament or BE Football in the next 2 years.

I'm with you on Louisville and TCU to the Big 12 but not WVU.  WVU belongs in the SEC.  I really hope this realignment keeps schools in geographical regions.  TCU and Houston to the Big East is ridic imo.  You're in Texas for Christ's sake!  Houston, TCU, BYU, and Louisville to the Big 12 makes sense.

If the Big XII must stay then the conference should add TCU, Louisville and West Virginia and be done with it.  That would be the greatest gift the state of West Virginia has received since being allowed to split from Virginia.  The Mountaineers would get to play in the Big XII North division and fight Mizzou for the championship year in and year out.  I for one would welcome these three into the conference.  In fact, I may burn an old couch of mine this evening in support of the move.

I don't think you can compare Louisville's decision to leave Conference USA to join a conference that is a BCS AQ to two underachieving football schools leaving one BCS conference to join a weaker football conference- the ACC has been 1-10 over the last eleven years in BCS Bowl games while the Big East has been a respectable 6-5 during that same time frame.  Pitt and Syracuse to the ACC doesn't even strengthen that conference as much as adding TCU, Navy and Air Force to the BE.  Houston would certainly make the conference stronger in football than Syracuse did.

This whole maneuver was about $$$ and nothing but $$$, market exposure, and $$$.

It's time to jump off the sinking ship. The Big East people sat down for hours trying to save their confrence and come out with Navy, Air Force, Houston, Central Florida, and East Carolina? Those five schools couldn't wash the jock straps of Syracuse. Basketball will now be known as the Uconn invitational, and the ACC gets great match-ups between Syracuse UNC, and Pitt Duke. Great move for the Cuse, now maybe they can bring back the exceptional pride that Syracuse football used to put out.

Well, there's two more teams that won't get a good call from the refs all season.
