A&M AD: We want 'Horns as nonconference game

Long before Texas A&M's move the SEC became official (as it did Sunday afternoon), fans on both sides have wondered what would become of the Aggies longtime -- and at 117 years, we do mean longtime -- rivalry with the University of Texas.
While the traditional Thanksgiving series' ultimate fate is yet to be determined, what we do know is that things were left solely up to the Aggies, the rivalry would remain intact. That's the word from Texas A&M athletic director Bill Byrne, who per RapidReporter Brent Zwerneman said Tuesday that "we would like that to continue."

“We’ve been competing 117 years,” Byrne said. “It’s such a storied tradition."

Byrne's support (and A&M's) give the rivalry a shot at survivial. But since it naturally takes that support from both sides to work, it remains unlikely the two teams will continue playing. Just six days ago, Longhorn athletic director DeLoss Dodds forecasted an end to the rivalry if the Aggies completed their jump to the SEC, saying "I think it will be hard to schedule that game."

And it would be. particularly if the Big 12 expands into a 10-team league with a nine-game true round robin schedule. In addition to denying the Longhorns a lucrative annual home game (one they would have the rights to show on the Longhorn Network), it's hard to argue the 'Horns owe the Aggies much of anything after A&M's decision destabilized Texas's preferred conference home and may have driven them into the "Pac-16," if the Pac-12 had been willing to expand.

Agges fans (and administrators) would no doubt respond that it was Texas's unwillingness to share revenue equally and their forging ahead with the LHN that destabilized the Big 12 first, before A&M even considered leaving.

Frankly, there's no winners on either side of the argument. But unless Texas is willing to back down and scheudule the game, it won't much matter how A&M feels about it--there aren't going to be any winners between the two schools on the football field, either.

A&M AD: We want 'Horns as nonconference game

I believe you are right about A&M's inferiority complex regarding the Longhorns and also the Aggie fanbase  having the hots to become a member of the SEC.   What really disgusts me is the verbose  explanations Byrnes gave in his June 2010 memo as reasons to remain a 'dedicated'  member of the Big-12.    The pledges of loyalty to the B-12 Byrnes made and his claims of dedication were either outright lies or just pompous words to conceal his true intentions.

I suspect that Bill Byrnes, like Nebraska's Pearlman,    is finding it very difficult to make any long-lasting relationships built upon mutual trust.

A&M AD: We want 'Horns as nonconference game

So A&M states the "real" reason for moving to the SEC is for more "national attention"...ask Venderbilt about that!  Newsflash...A&M prez is right, the SEC is always on TV...Bama, Florida, Auburn, LSU, Arkansas...normally teams in the top 25 year in and year out.  A&M sniffed the top 10 for a hot second this year but then got that flame snuffed by OUS...again.   The SEC's strength of schedule has dropped significantly with the addition of A&M...LOL...

A&M loses to OSU yet wants the SEC?  Priceless....Texas Fight, Texas Fight, and it's good-bye to A&M!

A&M AD: We want 'Horns as nonconference game

As a Sooner fan and a fan of the Big 8 and then the Big 12, I have no respect for either Nebraska or Texas A&M.  In a world wholely consumed by greed, the tradition of College sports seemed to stand out.  No more.

I am fine with the remianing Big 12 teams not scheduling either A&M or Nebraska.

Matter of fact, I enjoyed the Oklahoma State win over A&M this weekend even more so than the Sooners win over Mizzou!

A&M AD: We want 'Horns as nonconference game

From everything I've read, it was Nebraska that was the main obstacle to more equitable revenue sharing in the Big 12. Then they went downhill and realized that maybe it wasn't such a good idea but by then other schools (mainly Texas, OU and Texas A&M) decided it was. So quit whining about Texas when the whole problem to begin with was started by Nebraska.

@AvatarTX and Aggie Nation

Allow me to educate you "Avatar"

When has A&M ever "shown it's Big 12 brethren that it gives a damn about them".  As a matter of fact and public record, A&M has never voted to share Tier 1 and 2 media rights equally.  Y'all held the SEC gun to the Big 12's heads last year in an effort to extort $20MM annually and gain concessions from the smaller members.

Last week, both OU and UT voted to share equally in Tier 1 & 2 media rights.  LHN and Tier 3 revenues aren't on the table and never will be.  Somehow, only A&M has a problem with that b/c you've been incapable of negotiating their own deal.
It would be in the best intrest of Texas to make some concessions to show its Big 12 brethren that it gives a damn about them.  The Longhorns' steady diet of me-first has left them bloated and indifferent to the feelings of their peers. You can bet that OU is looking over their shoulders at Texas and its greed wondering if they will let go of their purse strings for another "PAC 12" opportunity to arise.

A&M AD: We want 'Horns as nonconference game

...and the damned want ice water in Hell, but that ain't gonna happen either.

Why would UT schedule a non-conference game with A&M?  We have no incentive for helping them raise their profile with Texas athletes and potential recruits.  I don't see this game happening while DeLoss is the AD, at least.

ESPN, CBS or ABC would have to money-whip UT severely to convince us otherwise.  The Aggies basically turned their backs on UT, the BIG XII and a 100 year-old rivalry.  Byrne's posturing is just more CYA politicking.  "Don't blame us for the game not happening".

I've got an idea - why doesn't he spend some time trying to market A&M's Tier 3 media rights?  Last year, y'all earned $0, nada, zilch, zip.  I suppose that's UT's fault too, but the reality is the SEC doesn't share these revenues either.

A&M AD: We want 'Horns as nonconference game

LSUSMC ..... The reason Texas would not play A&M is the same reason LSU has given for years for NOT playing Texas every year. This offer was first made back in 1970, reoffered in 1976, 1982, 1988, 1992, 2000 and 2004 and yet LSU gives the same reason every time, they would lose a home game. That and the mere fact that the only reason A&M wants the game is because they know its one of the very few games they will have on TV every year, why would Texas want to help A&M do anything.  The SEC just lowered thier standards allowing a school like A&M in it. But then the SEC is just a bunch of schools that cheat continually, skirt every rule possable to get those wins. Texas will play Rice to help them out because Rice has never screwed them like A&M has several times.
Did this whackadoo justy insinuate that somehow Texas always asks LSU to play them but LSU refuses?  Yeah, and the Sun rises in the West.  I heard that Texas was rewriting history books but this is absurd.  LSU has asked many times to play Texas (Remeber, LSU has a long history of tough OCC, unlike Texas).  This guy then goes on to accuse the SEC of being a "cheating" conference.  Interesting that the conference that contains the remnants of the SWC, the conference that invented cheating, would somehow claim the high road.  Sure we get the occasional violation, but at least we aren;t killing off our basketball players like Baylor or locking concussed kids in closets.

no big 12 team should ever schedule the a&m again.ever
But playing Nebraska & Colorado is fine?  Oh yeah, both Oklahomos tried to bolt also but clean slate for them?  You Big-12 (9) loons are lots of things, but consistent is not one of them.

A&M AD: We want 'Horns as nonconference game

One thing constant over the last decade is that Texas doesn't hardly play anyone out of conference even though they are members of a weak conference.

You do realize the Big XII has 5 teams in the top 20 as the SEC does right? Think, then type.
You realize that the point you make is completely unrelated to Texas's out of conference schedule?  Its like someone asking you youor favorite color and you answer, "8."
