Friedgen: 'I could care less about Maryland'

Former Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen has not made any efforts to get back into coaching, and is currently enjoying some time off after 40+ years in the industry. Earlier this week, the current Terrapins got a visit from Ralph's wife Gloria. According to Jeff Barker of the Baltimore Sun, she reprised her former role as "team mom" and brought some snacks on her friendly visit.

Ralph, on the other hand, might not be ready for such a visit anytime soon.

In an interview on a Baltimore radio station, Ralph made his feelings for his alma mater clear. The host asked Friedgen if he watches Maryland play, and if he thought seeing them struggle recently was painful.

"Well, it's not painful because I watch it for the kids," Friedgen responded. "I could care less about Maryland. I've burned my diploma, I'm flying a Georgia Tech flag right now."

Friedgen had two different stints as the Yellow Jackets' offensive coordinator, and compared to the Terps it is a more enjoyable fan experience right now. Friedgen was ousted just weeks after being named ACC Coach of the Year for leading the Terps to a seven-win turnaround. In his ten years as head coach Fridgen was 75-50 with a 5-2 bowl record and delivered an ACC title in his first year (2001).

Current head coach Randy Edsall will face Towson this weekend, as the squad looks to bounce back from an embarrassing 38-7 loss to Temple at home. Towson head coach Rod Ambrose was a member of Edsall's staff at Connecticut from 2001 to 2009. The Tigers' rushing attack has been potent, ranking 10th in FCS with 246 yards per game. The Terps currently ranked 11th in the ACC in rushing defense, and need a strong showing before traveling to Georgia Tech next week.

Friedgen: 'I could care less about Maryland'

Actually, the correct phrase is "I couldn't care less."

Yes, gramatically, I couldn't care less is correct English but I'm referring to the expression.  I Googled it immediately after I posted my remark and I thought someone would respond because it seems there's a big historical argument over which is right.  Grammatically there's no question but there's a debate over what the original expression was, could or couldn't.  I first heard in in the '60 as "I could care less".  I thought it was contradictory then too but expressions don't necessarily follow gramatical form so I went by the context and got the same meaning.  Have you ever heard anyone say "I couldn't give a s**t"?  I haven't. I've only heard it as "I could give a s**t".  How 'bout "Let them eat cake"?  Gramatically it makes no sense at all but we all know what it means.  The bottom line is people say it both ways and we all know what is meant.

I was responding to someone saying he just couldn't understand what Coach Friedgen meant by "I could care less" which I took as just being a smarta$$.  The man has every right to have hard feelings as most of us would if we were treated the same way.  There is a very negative psycological effect to being fired, especially after having done a good job.  The man's human.

you are right on...Maryland sacks some of the best students in the state for overseas tuition..my tax money supports an institution that wants to be Chapel Hill or Virginia but turns away some of the best and brightest for $$...well,Maryland;Virginia or Carolina doesn't do that..Georgia and So.Carolina give academic grants to state honor roll students..and after of all that, they were lucky to beat Townsend.

Follow..

What happened to Fridge is a perfect example of what is wrong with sports and our society in general.  Winning is not even good enough, being dedicated is not enough..only perfection and being the best is good enough.   ...well.....only one can be the best and a handful can be the tops.   Figures this attitude is represented by the state school in the second most liberal state in the country.......fitting and no wonder we are in trouble.

Dynamike....the village idiot

The only illiterate ones in College Park are the students themselves!

My seventh grader even had the sense to take one look at your school, at one swim meet, and said, 'There is no way I would ever go here.".......UVA UNC or Duke......good girl of mine.

The students, adminstration, AD and anyone associated with maryland who think sacking Fridge was a good idea is completely hi, insane, drunk or and stupid.  Fridge was a great coach...did a great job...it is just that MD is NEVER....repeat for fans who are hard of hearing....will NEVER be able to compete with the VTs, Penn States, or even long term the UVAs.  You will never get the kids over those schools.  Your slot is below the UVAs and NC States...and above the Villanovas and Temples....never to improve past that.  THAT makes was Fridge did for you amazing!  ......does not surprise me though  ...Maryland students, just like the state..a bunch of self absorbed, ingnorant ingrates.

Friedgen: 'I could care less about Maryland'

It should be:  I could not care less.  Meaning you don't care.  NOT, I could care less.  If you could care less, then you care.

Friedgen: 'I could care less about Maryland'

PLEASE.....The Fridge is gone because 1) the student body hated him....and he could not generate any excitment; 2) he is illiterate.....go back and listen to inteviews, especially post-game; 3) considering points 1 and 2....he could NOT recruit talent that would take the program to the next level.....I realize assitants do much of the recruiting, but what young kid would want to play for this guy....really??......an old scholl throwback who could not relate to today's players and had no interest in evloving.....that is why is he gone. His comments serve an exhibit B..... GOOD RIDDANCE.

Friedgen: 'I could care less about Maryland'

This is so classless by Friedgen it is amazing.  Maryland gave a lot to him and his family, and it was simply time to part ways.  But for him to say he burned his diploma is low and uncalled for.  Good riddens Fridge, buh bye.
